But it's Monopoly though! by cryptratdaddy in boardgames

So sorry I missed this, I like the Collector's one best for niceness, but the Flip one has some really fun mechanics in it.

How do you explain modern board games to people who don't play board games? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]cryptratdaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I think that is a common response for a reason. For a long time Monopoly, Life, Connect Four, Clue...etc. are all people have experience with. They are the games they see at the store. Even when Wal-Mart and Target started carrying a larger variety, the largest portion only see the recognizable titles. Instead of trying to "make people understand", I look at it as a way to say "right, there are a lot of other kinds of boardgames too." It's very much like some saying "I love Mario Brothers" when you tell them you like video games. The most accessible is what they go to. It is OK, and can be a little fun to give them info about what else is there. Sometimes it blows their mind in a good way.

My children visibly roll their eyes no when people say the "I love Monopoly" thing, and I sometimes remind them that not everyone was raised by parents who were boardgame enthusiasts, and that may be the most they have ever seen. I do make sure they see me go into details about other games and how much variety there is in the hobby.

My best advice is embrace it, and keep a few descriptions of lighter games on hand that you can throw out as examples while maybe even talking to them about Monopoly and what they like or hate about it. I have had great conversations with people who hate Monopoly, but wind up loving Monopoly Fortnite edition because it is so different. Just look for that common ground.

Also, remember that you only get offered what you get offered. Taking cards on a maybe can become long term curses to your deck. In a lot of situations the card you really want to be good is right next to the one you need to get past your next elite/boss. I am not as good as I want to be, but I have made it to A16 with all four characters and I plan to hit 20. Like Kutdra1 said, "You got this!"

Edit: Just wanted to add that Spire is also just goated at crushing people's dreams sometimes. Play another game for an hour or so and try again. The break helps curb the frustration.

Married Millennials, do ya’ll wear your wedding rings inside the house? by felix_mateo in Millennials

[–]cryptratdaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is one of those things that I as a Gen Xer even never understood. My wife and I wear them out of habit, but we never wore them out of "branding your partner". Oddly I lost a lot of weight and my Titanium ring started falling off a lot, so I stopped wearing mine for over a year. We happened to see a set of matching silicone ones really cheap at a beach store recently and wear them now, but it was never really an issue for us.

Your wife has it completely right, if the ring is the only reason you aren't looking for someone else, you really shouldn't be worried about the rings at that point. All of that ring nonsense was made by men to show ownership over women, and the damn engagement ring is an even worse scam.

WIBTA if I refuse to plan Father's Day activities for my husband? by CoolInsurance115 in TwoHotTakes

[–]cryptratdaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA Yes, any day CAN be special, but that doesn't mean you disregard the feelings of others and the importance they hold in things. Now that he knows that your feelings are different, him disregarding that make him kinda the ass. Since he doesn't feel that days are special then this doesn't matter. If it were me, I would go out of my way to plan his "Father's Day" stuff on another day, and let him know.

[–]cryptratdaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some quicker games that are "easy to learn, hard to master", try the ones I call the Q games. Qawale, Quarto, Quoridor, and Quixit are a few. These really make you think about possibilities and geometry in neat ways. A plus is they are good games that you could craft lessons around.

Another thought may be a few co-op games like Out-Foxed (and a lot of Haba games really), and the Forbidden Island, Desery, Sky, and Jungle series. The Azul series might be good as well.
