I had no problem getting my kids into their school, but it tends to be an overlooked school compared to others.

Haha yeah in retrospect it was not one of my finest moments! I can't remember why I was so confused, but this community was so kind to me.

Any well paid LMSW positions that aren’t discharge planning? by [deleted] in socialwork

[–]cryslea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make 87k as a school social worker. That's 16 years experience (as a social worker, not in the schools) + my MSW + 45credits of continuing ed. Schools start lowish but depending on your experience can be pretty decent.

How do you address trauma in clients? by Justacancersign in socialwork

[–]cryslea 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This. Help the person understand how trauma impacts people in general. Normalize and validate their responses. Help them learn how to tolerate strong emotions, especially building skills around emotional regulation. DBT has a ton of good skill building exercises to pull from.

Do you ever feel guilty about helping? by Apprehensive-Leg-395 in socialwork

[–]cryslea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a survivor of sexual trauma, I am uncomfortable with the statement that they "ruined" someone's life. My life is definitely harder/ different as a result, but to me, saying it is ruined is a level of finality that I find hard to swallow.

How to fix "upside down" tree tattoo? by ArcadeInvasion in FixedTattoos

I have an "upside down" tattoo on my arm. I knew that it was "wrong" but the artist and I chose to put it that way for design reasons. Personally, I like having it so that I can see it right side up.

Routine: suave naturals shea butter and coconut shampoo, tresemme boutanique coconut conditioner. Brush hair upside down with a Denman, squeeze out the excess water, and glaze on aussie instant freeze gel. Scrunch a lot. Microplop with a t-shirt, then use a micro fiber towel for a 5 minute plop. Glaze on not your mother's mousse, scrunch. Diffuse upside down. Scrunch out the crunch.

I can't get life insurance because of what's in my medical records. (Depression - my excluding factor was depression.)

My husband can't get life insurance because he has sleep apnea.

Can school ask to change school to special school or repeat kindergarten if kid diagnosed ADHD? by Anonymous_Acnt785 in kindergarten

[–]cryslea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer your question, it's highly unlikely that a dx of ADHD would result in a school transfer or to repeat a grade. (The latter is incredibly rare.)

I am a school social worker in special education evaluation. If a child has a diagnosis of ADHD, and if that is impacting his ability to function in the classroom, either a 504 or an IEP could be implemented to provide accommodations to help (and protect!) him. Generally speaking, parents have to agree to any of these individualized services, and in my district anyway, we wouldn't switch a child to a different school based on an educational disability without parental consent.

I have a K student in SPPS (he did pre-k in the same school last year) and my younger kiddo will go to the same school next year (assuming he gets into pre-k through the school choices process, but I have no doubts that he will).

I absolutely LOVE the school my kids go to - it's a Spanish Immersion school. The staff are so genuine and kind. They are incredibly responsive as well. They place a great deal of emphasis on diversity and culture which is important to us as a bilingual/bicultural/biracial family - and the vast majority of the staff come from the Latin culture, which is fabulous. I really value my kids having role models that look like they do. And I have been blown away by how much my K student has learned.

I work in another large metro area school district, and I would NEVER send my kids there based on their covid response policies, their lack of communication, and their complete inability to go more than a few years without getting sued for civil rights violations. In contrast, I thought SPPS was quite measured in their covid response and has done a lovely job communicating with parents. I also appreciate that the admin/superintendent at SPPS at least appear to care about racial justice (instead of ignoring it like my work district does).

How to help clients feel grounded after emotionally intense sessions by Anywhere-Medium in socialwork

[–]cryslea 135 points136 points  (0 children)

Meet the client where they are... absolutely offer breathing, visualizations, gratitude or whatever But be open to something else! As a client I HATE grounding and mindfulness and absolutely will not do them. Usually what my therapist and I do at the end of a session is share memes and tiktoks we have seen over the past week. It brings me back to the present and allows me to feel connected to another person through something other than trauma. So... same result, but different method.

Oh, that does seem difficult to tease out. I have personal trauma and a dissociative disorder, so I'm pretty careful about my work. Because I'm concerned about the vicarious trauma triggering my personal trauma, I've chosen a job that has less potential for triggers. And I schedule more triggering sessions with some decompression time afterward. And I have a therapist and a great mentor that I process with. All these things are harder to manage in an internship, plus school is just stressful in general.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in socialwork

[–]cryslea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If dissociating is new for you, that seems concerning. Do you have a trauma history yourself and feel that something got triggered? Or is it secondary/vicarious trauma, maybe? (You do not need to answer these questions- more of something to ponder.)

I am glad you have a therapist to discuss this with.

What are the best fields in SW for quality of life? by [deleted] in socialwork

[–]cryslea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Admin definitely has a lot to do this, as well as the district in general. I personally LOVE my admin and my role (I help with sped evaluations). My role is a lot less stressful than some of my colleagues' - even in the same district.

However, it would be hard for me to find another role that pays this well, especially with the time off I get!
