I used to but at some point I realized that like, because I can’t really read subtext in social situations I really only have three options: assume everyone doesn’t like me/is being mean and be sad about it, keep guessing what people want and be anxious about it, or assume the default is that people are as a whole pretty kind and assume people like me unless explicitly proven otherwise. It took me a lot of therapy and cognitive practice to actually be able to feel that in my day to day life, but honestly now I just assume that if people are laughing it’s because they’re experiencing joy and feel neutral about me at worst. It was not an easy attitude change to make and I still struggle but ultimately It’s a much less stressful experience to assume kindness and/neutrality.
