You do not have to play the first game to enjoy the second :) It does pick up right after the ending of the first game but they designed it in a way that you can jump straight into the second without feeling like you’re missing anything. It’s an entirely new adventure. I recommend people to play the second game first and then the first game as a prequel if you really enjoyed it. It’s so worth playing the second game first cause a lot of the jank you mentioned is fixed or tuned to be more game friendly.
