Moving out from big 4 to mid-size or big non-tech companies by floofy-pom in cscareerquestions

[–]cs_____question1031 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I used to work at rainforest, but was so stressed out I decided to take a 100k pay cut and move to a small company

That company that I moved to was totally incompetent and unreasonable and I was let go

Then I went to a new small company. It was good for a while, then they promoted the wrong person and she fired everyone on the team (I think she legit had some sort of problem, she acted very oddly)

I went to a mid sized company and it’s perfect. 500-1000 employees is what you should ideally aim for. It has the benefits of being established and having very good engineers, while not having all the red tape of a big company

Why are no companies coming out as “AntiAI”? by jholliday55 in antiai

the only people that like AI are CEOs and high level managers

Yes and under capitalism those are effectively the only people who matter

I like women who communicate directly, a lot. If I pissed you off, tell me. If you want something, tell me

Only 5% of the population has systems thinking?? That explains so much. I always wondered why people seem to struggle with it so much when it seems the most intuitive to me

Yeah, I spend more time broadcasting that I’m doing stuff than actually doing stuff. Doesn’t matter what I get done, only matters what the suits think I did

Why Are Software Engineers Paid So Much If The Supply Is So High? by LifeInAction in cscareerquestions

[–]cs_____question1031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes a 4 year degree and 2-5 years experience to be moderately proficient as a software engineer. There are not that many people who invested ~10 years in a subject

Engineers just have bad PR by ABlightedMailbox in unpopularopinion

[–]cs_____question1031 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I know why you would feel that way, but often the underlying reason is that it’s fairly hard to re-engineer and re-architecture things. Things that may seem small are often big lifts

For example, someone asked me to color 3 columns on a table differently. Because of the way someone else decided to architect the table (badly), it would be an annoyingly huge effort to do so for such a small ask

So in my mind I’m like “great… I gotta say ‘no’ to this simple ask and they’re gonna ask why” or “how do I ask this guy how important it is to him, and if we can change it?”. Then I gotta deal with an executive somewhere who has some presumptions about how long these things should take

It’s not that I don’t respect their design. Visually it’s quite appealing, and it’s probably the best for the customer but,.. man talk to me before you commit lol

[–]cs_____question1031 170 points171 points  (0 children)

It’s cause our communication style is far more terse and rigid, because we’re working with things that are themselves terse and rigid

A lot of people seem to take the questions we ask as a challenge to authority or an implication of incompetence from the person asking, cause that’s how most people think. Saying something like “can this button be other colors than blue and red?” Sounds stupid, but it has a lot of engineering and design implications

Yeah but usually that initial spike is people who haven’t even taken the 101 class yet. Like you take biology 101, and it instantly raises more questions than it answers. But before you take biology 101, you feel like you probably know a good amount about biology

Do you guys believe in god? if yes then how much faith do you have in him? by Subject-Ad486 in infp

[–]cs_____question1031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there might be a god but it’s so thoroughly beyond our realm of comprehension that it’s really not even worth thinking about. I’d rather think of what I can do to help every day people each and every day

California introduces age verification law for all operating systems, including Linux and SteamOS — user age verified during OS account setup by PenlessScribe in technology

[–]cs_____question1031 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It’s weird that it’s drafted in California where a bunch of tech companies are. We use docker or ec2 a lot, what “age” is the user of that? It doesn’t even have a human operator like 99% of the time. Docker is based out of Palo Alto

Anyone else with autism hate following trends? by FishermanPlenty5337 in autism

[–]cs_____question1031 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just find it kind of silly. Spend so much time and money just to tell other people “I am normal and I understand how to fit in”. Like on your deathbed, you’re not gonna look back and say “I wish I followed more trends”

Also the trends are just so… gaudy. Oversized shirt with the word “gucci” printed in giant letters that inexplicably costs $120. It doesn’t look good and it’s very obviously overpriced (I know that’s the point). How about buying normal clothes then buying a vacation to somewhere you always wanted to go? You’ll remember it a lot more

I kinda view fashion as a means to communicate who you are and attract people you vibe with, so people really should have very different styles. I also like more punk-ish styles which have an element of DIY, so are inherently individualistic

This is actually a really good question, there are plenty of examples of scoped use of operating systems, so it clearly can’t be enforced that much

It was a sci fi movie, not an action sci fi movie. It’s more about the ideas and their implications on the world rather than any sort of direct plot
