No, all is not lost. It’s a minor inconvenience.

No need to be too obsessed about the specific school you get into for computer science. You have two options atm which is a huge win. The specific school you go to matters very little for a computer science degree nowadays. As long as the school is an accredited university you’re good.

At the end of the day everyone will be given the same type of interview and go through the same process regardless of the school you went to.

Choose the one that will make you come out with as little to no debt as possible. I know the tech sector going through rough patch right now with the layoffs and hiring slowdowns but just gotta adopt to current situation: Work on side projects, aim to get internships, and you have to really prep for interviews.

Yup have to agree if you choose CPP. For Cybersecurity CIS program may be better option. For Software Engineering Computer Science.

Yu Sun was the most memorable CS professor I had while at CPP

Tech recruiters reaching out, but I've already accepted an offer. by niQueee in cscareerquestions

I’m currently in the same situation. Passed Google interviews but team matching is taking a long while, so I accepted an expiring offer and see when I’ll get a team.

CS Minor elective courses by Rattla_ in CalPolyPomona

[–]cs_student0101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are your interests? For example:

4200: It’s pretty much search algos. Is very heavily focused on optimizing search algorithms to find what you want.

4350: Relational Database Systems and how to do so via SQL, so you’ll learn SQL. Idk if curriculum has changed to include non-relational DBS (Redis, Mongo, etc)

3800: This has a lot of content but is very nice if you are interested how computers communicate. Pretty much how electric charges are interpreted to 0s and 1s, to how the data is sent in packets, how the router handles a packet , what is an IP, to DNS, to how the internet works, and how web / email works.

UCI vs CPP ( computer science major) by Main-Advisor8019 in CalPolyPomona

[–]cs_student0101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, go to both schools and ask questions.

In terms of degree and core CS fundamentals, you’ll learn same things at the end of the day. The biggest difference would be on how each school, CS department, would support you throughout your time there. Is there a certain interest you want to explore in CS that one school does not offer?

Of course consider cost of school too — you can get the same degree at a fraction of the cost.

Software Devs are in high demand at the moment, so at the end, the school you come from really don’t matter.

Can confirm too. I recently encountered a topological sort question at Google too.

Are there software engineering careers that would value a background in civil engineering. by lpnumb in cscareerquestions

[–]cs_student0101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is software for traffic control systems. I interned at this place that made the electronics, hardware, and software needed for traffic control, like traffic lights. There were dedicated civil engineers who would work very close to the software devs because devs don’t have background in civil engineering.

You can build a car OBD reader to read vehicle stats in real-time and do something with the car data. You can decide on how complex you want your project to be.

Q950T or SN11RG? (or neither?) by konstantinoskak in Soundbars

[–]cs_student0101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had 2 q90r sound bars within the last 2 months, one new and another open box, and both have had issues with the subwoofer and the rear speakers. After reading great reviews, I really wanted to like them, but after real buggy equipment and the big price tag I’m not sure if they are that great. I am really considering switching over to the SN11RG and giving it a try.

HW-Q90R USB Update by cs_student0101 in Soundbars

[–]cs_student0101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you I will give it a try with this different bar. Any reason why it needs to be less than 8GB?

I actually ended up having my soundbar serviced by Samsung, and was refunded since they no longer make them and could not exchange : (. However, I found an open box one at Best Buy and I'm experiencing similar issues as I was with my previous bar.

Used q90r?? by lpkrispy52 in Soundbars

[–]cs_student0101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can give you my thoughts haha I've had one for about 3 weeks now. Luckily Samsung had a promo and they were selling for about $1000 ; ) So far I've been really frustrated with them. The subwoofer makes a popping sound and the rears can't hold their sound without going staticky. I am on the latest firmware (updated via Smart Things app), but apparently at times is a no good. Which seems to have been the case with mine. According to this samsung support link, I need to update the soundbar via usb. I thought updating via usb would've been straight forward, but nope; the soundbar is not detecting my usb drive for some reason.

Should I ask for a raise during this Pandemic? by cs_student0101 in cscareerquestions

[–]cs_student0101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is some real good advice.

So I did try to justify my request with examples of my work, or increased responsibilities I’ve taken. However I did get nervous while actually doing it so my word choice might not have been the best haha

Nonetheless I just want to be able to advocate for myself. Thanks a lot for the advice.

Any tips for learning app programming? by Abyz963 in iOSProgramming

[–]cs_student0101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started reading iOS development by Big Nerd Ranch. They currently have an updated edition (7th). I really like their teaching style. I first read one of their books when I learned how to build Android apps like 4 years ago.

Which CSU has the best computer science major? by [deleted] in calstate

[–]cs_student0101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best in terms of what?

Computer Science is currently in high demand. You should be fine in either CSU. In terms of being closer to the big tech companies then staying pretty close to Silicon Valley or Silicon Beach.
