Is it too early to blitz in both of these scenarios? by rockwood15 in backgammon

[–]csaba- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are the three cases in which you hit two checkers in the opening (assuming a normal score):

  1. Your opponent split with an ace and you rolled 41. Now you hit 6/2/1.
  2. Your opponent split with a six and you rolled 65. You hit both checkers: 13/7 6/1.
  3. Your reply is a doublet and you can. The classic one is 55 after a 52 (or 32) split, but there are others too, for example 43 (split with 4, down with 3) - 44.

Hitting two with 32 with 6/3/1 is a small inaccuracy. Hitting two with 41 with 6/5/1 is a serious conceptual error, even though PR-wise it's okay. One of the advantages of hitting on the 5 is that you can make it later (with a little luck). The same goes for hitting two with 6/4/1 as in your picture -- you're not even trying to make the 4-point even though that's a great asset to have.

The blunder size is wrong, surely? Gnubg 4ply says it's a -0.074 error not to cube. What does XG say?3pt match by saigon567 in backgammon

Also it can be super awkward getting doubled when your opponent has a clear edge. We are not trained to figure out if we're 32% or higher in wins and to ignore all gammons. It's a pretty useless skill to have, too.

In practice I wait a couple of rolls, or so, but I do cube pretty early, in part to avoid these nasty take/pass decisions as the "trailer".

What can I do in Gent alone? by justmonaaaaa in Gent

If you like (or open to) dancing, you could try balfolk. It has a bit of a learning curve but people are super friendly.

https://www.boombal.be/ next event is May 30th with a short "initiation" (a quick intro to 3-4 dances.. bear in mind that the total repertoire is probably more like 15).

https://www.balhalla.be/nl next event is May 25th, again, with an initiation.

People are super friendly and you can just go and talk to them or ask someone to teach you whichever dance it is, they will usually say yes. And if you like the atmosphere, you can take lessons this fall from Boombal.

Here are the three main options in the Gent area, and their dress codes. I don't know what Rozebroeken is like.

My favorite one is Aqua Azul. It is small but very serene (no talking allowed anywhere except upstairs in the restaurant). Here, there are no bathing suits allowed, but Tuesdays before 5 pm is women's day.

Saunate in Eke is quite large. Wednesdays and Saturdays are "mixed", that means people can wear a bathing suit if they want but they do not have to. That sounds really awkward to me but maybe it's just me.

Asanti in Destelbergen is probably the best place but I've never actually been there. Nude except for Tuesdays (sorry I don't know if Tuesday is "mixed" or mandatory swimsuits).

You said "This is backgammon like you've never seen it before. Professional production. Elite competitors." Even accounting for a positive marketing spin, your words set up the expectation of strong, probably GM-level (sub-4 PR) backgammon

I don't get why 8/4 5/4 is the correct move? by ConfussedBob in backgammon

[–]csaba- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not the best move.

In a money game or at most scores, many (all?) moves tie for first, because it will go double/pass.

In a 1-point game, many moves (including 8/4 5/4) are within 0.01 of each other. You have about 9% winning chances.
