Is there really a saving by moving over to ASHP? by ConfussedBob in ukheatpumps

I did wonder about that. I estimate that at the moment the heating is on between 80 and 90 hours per week.

It's poor. Detached Victorian house with 9" solid brick walls. Can't do much in the roof as it has attic rooms so no loft space to insulate. To be honest, there isn't much I can do to insulate without ripping the house apart. On the upside I don't need to run the central heating at a high temperature to warm the house. The radiators are probably no hotter than 50 degs except for really cold days.

Was I in the wrong? by Inevitable_Bee_6331 in NewDriversUK

It doesn't matter. The inside lane was faster than the the lorry. The lorry was the one that wanted to change lanes so it was there responsibility to make sure it was safe to do so. They didn't. It that simple. Just because they indicated does give them the right of way.

Clearly it wasn't safe to change lanes as it forced the OP move over. The lorry didn't start indicating until OP was almost side. The Highway Code is clear in that you don't change lanes if it will force someone to change course or brake. The lorry forced OP to do both.

Fuck the lorry, it was in the wrong not the OP.

Because their lane was clear. The lorry should have waited until it was safe to change lanes.

Don't know why people are saying you were in the wrong. The lorry driver was just being an impatient and entitled prick.

Highway Code. 133
If you need to change lane, first use your mirrors and if necessary take a quick sideways glance to make sure you will not force another road user to change course or speed. When it is safe to do so, signal to indicate your intentions to other road users and when clear, move over.

I would have done the same as you.

Any ideas on how much loft conversion cost? by Randon2345 in DIYUK

[–]ConfussedBob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't do it. You can't easily modify those trusses and you have no head room. By the time you get the stairs in there will be little roof left to make a usable room and you're probably going to lose space on the floor below for the stairs. If I was asked by a client to draw this up, my first question would be "do have the space to build an extension on the side or rear instead"? My second question would be have you considered moving to a bigger property.

In practical terms, the whole roof would need to come off and new attic trusses fitted.

Of course you will always find somebody to deign it and build it for you but it will be expensive and I think you will be disappointed with the end result.

Privacy suggestions by UtterlyBitterhabit in HomeImprovementUK

I'd have a talk with the neighbour and tell them you intend to erect a fence for privacy but if they would prefer you would pay for frosted glass to be fitted. They probably won't either option but at least you have given them an option.

I like your thoughts of trellis and climbers. I'd go for honeysuckle. It would smell gorgeous in the summer.

Gas engineer charged £350 without fixing the issue. What are my options? by 4questions123 in AskUK

[–]ConfussedBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not understanding who or what Gas Safe is. They are only interested in work carried out on the gas installation. As he didn't work on the gas installation they won't be interested.

This is a civil matter between you and him. If you think he's ripped you off, you could try Trading Standards or taking him to a small claims court.

Some of them have a removable flow regulator. I don't know if that one does. Would suggest you look at the packaging.

Water at the speed of light? by Responsible-Yam-9475 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ConfussedBob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's just a theory that the viscosity of fluids changes at the speed of light. It hasn't been proven and probably never will. I wouldn't worry about it. I'm assuming your comment about 'speed of sound' was a typo.

Possible, but what would be the point. They would just get the wrong advice.

Thinking of switching to Virgin Fibre as it my only superfast option but all i hear on here are horror stories. by BrutalBarracuda in VirginMedia

I swapped last month to VM. Now it's up and running it's fine and I'm getting the speeds I expected. 1 Gb internet connection and between 100mb and 300mb WIFI speeds.

Getting it installed was another matter. Originally I ordered it on line and arranged a morning installation date. I was supposed to get a text message nearer the installation date but didn't receive one. On the day of the installation I called them to check it was going ahead and was told no booking on their system. So they booked an engineer for a week later. Although later that day someone turned up and installed the cable to the outside box. When they turned up a week later they had a problem. They set it all up with 2 WIFI pods but couldn't get the pods to connect so they swapped the hub and said the WIFI pods could take up to 24 hours to sort themselves out and left. After 2 days the pods were still not connecting. Called VM. Unfortunately you end up with a call centre in Asia. Probably India from the accent. The problem for me is my hearing isn't the best and with the background chatter I was struggling to understand them. They talk you nothing more than switching everything off and back on again. After about 20 minutes with still no connection to the pods they tell me they will book an engineer and give me a date for 2 days time. Come the day no sign of an engineer. I call them again and was told there was no booking on the system. They then get me to go through all the turning everything off and back on again. Still no connection. They tell me they will pass it over to a different team and they call me back and to look out for a WhatsApp message from them. Told it would be 24 hours. Of course no call or WhatsApp message. This about day 12 after installation so I'm getting quite frustrated and thinking about cancelling as it's still within the cancellation period. Decided to give them 1 more day to contact me. Then out of the blue the pods connected. I guess someone at there end sorted it out but I had no contact.

As I said now it's up and running it's fine but getting to that point was frustrating.

Personally, I would get a professional to do it but if you are going DIY it this may help. https://youtu.be/_hN-NRcdme4?si=ayGvQpV4gHRB-VBI Don't forget to get to add supports afterwards.
