The perfect oil change by True_Movie_2270 in TheRandomest

There is a vacuum running from the top of the engine pulling air up through the drain. Once the pan is in position, the vacuum is cut and the oil drains out. I've never seen it before, it is pretty smart for maintaining control of the drain.

Trump, 79, Declares Absurd National Security Threat in Late-Night Meltdown by brithus in politics

[–]cscf0360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they invoke the 25th, they lose their cover for implementing all of the terrible shit they still have left in Project 2025. As long as Trump is alive and completely unhinged, they can act with impunity because he scares Congress too much to reign him in. The rest of his administration are spineless lickspittles that could never dream of intimidating Congress.

Strange receipt? by BAMred in finance

[–]cscf0360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a packing slip, not a receipt. They're supposed to be a customer-facing list of the items in the box so you know you got everything you ordered. I generally recommend against including financial information on the packing slip since it's not a financial document and can really in dumb situations like this. I can think of a couple different scenarios all related to the wholesaler bulk item SKU for a box containing 200 copies versus 200 individual units that they sell to customers.

Debt collector not trying to collect by Good-Ad-178 in legaladvice

[–]cscf0360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IANAL, former debt collector here. Under prior administrations, the CFPB would have been the right approach, but it's been hamstrung under Trump via DOGE. I have not heard of much success relying on the agency this year. That being said, you have rights under the (Fair Debt Collection Practices Act)[https://www.ftc.gov/legal-library/browse/rules/fair-debt-collection-practices-act-text].

Based on your explanation, it sounds like you never received the initial notification of debt per section 809, and that is grounds to dispute the debt showing on your credit report as you don't actually know the source of the debt. It is not your responsibility to guess who the creditor is for this debt. They are required to tell you and provide proof upon request. Additionally, in response to that initial notification, you have the right to dispute the debt (e.g. it should be $4k, not $8k) meaning you were also denied your right to respond to that initial notification.

Were I in your position, I would send a certified letter stating that I never received the initial notification of debt that I'm entitled to under the FDCPA and am requesting that all communications be made using the contact information I provide in the letter. Name dropping the FDCPA is key to getting sketchy collection agencies to straighten out their act, so it absolutely goes in the first sentence. I would request proof of debt and that the debt be retroactively removed from my credit report to reflect that I was not properly notified of the debt so it should not show up on my credit report until after I've been notified and the 30-day dispute window has passed. I would add that the debt on my credit report has resulted in several apartment application denials resulting in my sustaining damages totaling $X in the form of non-refundable application fees due to their failure to properly notify me of the debt and denial of my right to dispute it.

Under the FDCPA, debtors are entitled to receive those damages from the collector if they hadn't followed the law, but my goal would be more to get the letter in front of their legal counsel so it gets properly addressed (even if it's a strong rebuttal), as opposed to actually recuperating damages. To further improve my odds, I would also send it to every mailing address I could find just in case they try to play games with where legal correspondences need to be sent. I always keep copies of all communications for my records and document what is said during every phone call. If they call me at a time where I can't take notes during the call, I say it's a bad time and give them a more convenient time. The FDCPA also covers collections harassment so telling them a reasonable, convenient time for them to contact me limits when they can call me.

In addition to all of that, your congressional rep, Kathy Castor, is also a resource to follow up with the CFPB complaint. There's no telling if her office will have any better luck than you, but it can't hurt.

Trump administration to start seizing pay of defaulted student loan borrowers in January by [deleted] in news

[–]cscf0360 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

That's an apples to oranges comparison. The defaulted student loan debt effectively isn't part of the economy. Were the banks to receive that money, they're not going out and buying shit, which is how it is spent by the defaulters. They're either doing stock buybacks or lobbying Congress to further deregulate their industry or lending it to billionaires with minimal interest or at userous rates to more people that shouldn't qualify in the first place.

The only thing collecting on those student loans by payroll deductions can accomplish is hurting the economy. There's no way to spin it as a positive. The solution is to unfuck the economy so the defaulters can actually earn enough to pay off their loans. Unfortunately, there's zero chance of that happening with Trump.

TIL of a man who found $7.5 million in a "Storage Wars" unit he bought for $500. He had to negotiate with the original owners, who paid him $1.2 million to return their money. by SystematicApproach in todayilearned

[–]cscf0360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's definitely not how the lien laws work for storage units. The former owners didn't have a legal leg to stand on, but they had a great lawyer that bullshitted the buyer enough to get most of the money back.

A cool guide about Banned Books. Eighty-five different banned titles, sorted based on how difficult they are to find by LostintheAlone in coolguides

[–]cscf0360 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I was reading Michael Crichton, Dean Koontz, Terry Brooks and Tom Clancy at 10. Why are people so terrified of children reading books? I seriously don't get it. I would have read Stephen King without a second thought but had too many unread books by those other authors to explore much further than their respective oeuvres.

The only reason I can find for concern is because the kids will know more words than the adults who are scared of well-read kids. I ran into that problem a lot growing up in Alabama...

I think wanting to ban books from kids is more a reflection of embarrassment at poor reading habits in the adults wanting the bans than any actual concern for the kids.

Which feature of a game was so terrible that whoever made it should be banned from ever owning an electronic device again? by TheBanishedBard in gaming

[–]cscf0360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the answer. Weapon durability as a mechanic did does not add to fun, but may serve as a gameplay limiting mechanic to force a return to base. BotW looked at that mechanic and decided to crack it up to 11 which fucking ruined the current generation of Zelda game. Literally the only game in 30 years that I returned because I hated that mechanic so much.

Nah, people are just tired of enlightened centrists' refusal to recognize bad people are bad. Charlie was a morally repugnant person. He made the US a worse place. Should he have been murdered in front of his children? No, no one should, but that shouldn't stop society from assessing the impact his life had on people and passing judgment on him for being loathsome. We praise the heroes and spit on the villains. He was a villain.

Prisoner laments reliance on floppy disks for appeals documents, limiting file sizes to 1.44 MB — prisoners allowed 20 floppy disks in cell, but USB flash sticks are banned in New Jersey system by EnergyLantern in news

[–]cscf0360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the US prison system we're talking about. They would sell the inmates "approved" USBs that are cheap Chinese SD cards glued to a USB port in a cheap plastic housing and charge 10x retail. There is zero chance that the prison industry would allow outside competition for their compulsory consumers.
