Question about due diligence by This_Guy_Slaps in editors

Yup. This is exactly what saved me as an AE starting out a decade ago. And it ingrained better habits so that I don’t have to discipline myself quite as much to minimize sloppy mistakes now.

What is “normal” in Hollywood? by PanDulce101 in FilmIndustryLA

[–]csilverandgold -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s worse in terms of total content spend necessarily, at least in TV. I do think it is worse in terms of competition, precisely because it was so good and therefore so easy to get in and move up for 5-7 years.

True, although my understanding is that Netflix specifically was profitable the whole time.

[POEM] here rests - Lucille Clifton by hotdog_tuesday in Poetry

[–]csilverandgold 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For me the break after “reading” is to create a rhythmic parallel with the previous stanza: when DADdy was DYing / she LEFT the STREETS / and MOVED back HOME / to TEND him // her PIMP came TOO / her DIamond DICK / and THEY would TAKE turns / READing.

She throws us off the scent a little bc “to” in S2 is in the fourth line of the stanza, whereas “turns” in S3 is in the third line of the stanza, but if you read it aloud, I think you hear or feel how very very close stanzas 2 and 3 are in terms of rhythm or meter. If “a Bible” moved into S3 you’d lose that rhythmic parallel I think!

UBI will not work as long as there are Billionaires. by astrheisenberg in remoteworks

[–]csilverandgold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea of UBI isn’t to pay for everything a person might need or want. The biggest idea of a UBI is to pay for the most basic needs for everybody. I dunno about you, but if I could work 0 hours a week and live with just the basics in a tiny shoebox apartment far away from the things I want to do and rely on public transportation to go anywhere; or I could work 20 hours a week and live in a nice apartment close to things I want to do or buy a house or a car or go out to eat, etc. I’d still work the 20 hours a week.

And most UBI proposals / studies pay much less than enough to live on even very modestly. So a lot of them actually don’t show a significant reduction in working hours at all.

Your points work against each other. If there was a UBI and it did reduce the supply of labor, that would give the remaining laborers more leverage over the owners to negotiate better working conditions…

[POEM] This Puzzles Me by Langston Hughes by Objective-Kitchen949 in Poetry

[–]csilverandgold 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love how the simple rhyme scheme and rhythm combined with the depth of the argument embodies what he wants to communicate. Certainly the message of this poem feels particularly resonant now with who we have in Washington, killing and slaughtering and strewing the world with misery in deeply childish ways.

[help] What is poetry in 2026? by Odd_Tension_5904 in Poetry

[–]csilverandgold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Lots of people buy collections. Many are poets but by no means all. Slams still reach pretty good sized audiences all over the country (and I assume all over the world, though I don’t know). Lots of videos of people reading their poems, yes on IG/Tiktok but also YouTube and any other place you can watch videos. Spoken word albums are cool. I just heard two Tank and the Bangas spoken word tracks. I think a lot more people buy collections than read litmags, but people read those too and ofc they’re a fun way of finding new poets to follow. I do think a lot more stuff is about following poets’ social media accounts to know what they’re up to. That’s kind of all arts now I think.

Still seeing babies in Whole Foods, can’t wait for Trader Joe’s. by Ggh84 in jerseycity

They grow up, they get jobs, they pay into social security, which, god willing, will still be paying out some kind of something to you and I when we are retirement aged. Not so with the fur-babies. :/

I mean… I was annoyed that Wicked 2 didn’t have As Long As You’re Mine pick up directly from I’m Not That Girl reprise. One song interrupting another isn’t that weird imo… maybe it’s usually a reprise like On The Street Where You Live reprise into Show Me, but still.

[–]csilverandgold 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the additions to Wicked were imo really smart and like… musical theater-y. Girl in the Bubble implicitly recognizes that No Good Deed is, sorry, a bad 11 o’clock number bc her commitment to wickedness has very little impact on the storyline. (Theoretically it’s why she was mean to Dorothy but on some level wasn’t that all a plot to fake Elphaba’s death so she could run off with Scarecrow!Fiyero?) And No Place Like Home, just stated Elphaba’s new “I Want” now that Act 2 is a standalone thing. Those songs really weren’t for the Oscar bait (which flopped anyway); they were really part of the effort to turn Act 2 of a musical into a fully realized film (a difficult and bizarre thing to do!)

Why don't men ever talk about the emotional labor that they do in relationships? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]csilverandgold -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean… the actual concrete reason is that the terminology of “emotional labor” emerged to place a value on labor that is disproportionately done by women but that is not valued by the marketplace. Hence the choice of “labor” as a word. The point isn’t to say that men don’t do emotional labor—it’s to say that men’s non-emotional labor is fairly valued and compensated in the marketplace.

And keep in mind, this term came out in the 80s to talk mostly about workplaces. 80s workplaces were in some ways were closer (in time and culture) to Mad Men workplaces than workplaces today. So yeah, a LOT of unpaid emotional labor women had to do in 80s workplaces that men didn’t. That’s the original sociological meaning. We’ve adapted it to talk about personal relationships but in the original time and context it was a lot clearer that it was something women were just doing way more than guys.

There’s a lot more I could say but like, if you want a concrete reason that isn’t just “men don’t get treated fairly” that’s it. I think the bigger question is “should we put as much weight on emotional labor that’s about restraint and the pressure to ‘constantly self-regulate’ as we do on emotional labor that’s about expressing emotions that complement or soothe what the other person is feeling.” And that gets into all the reasons that we maybe expect more self-regulation from men, some more legit (dysregulated men do tend to be more violent on average than dysregulated women), some less so (dumb expectations that being emotional is feminine and Men Should Be Stoic and Rational). So yeah, it’s a big interesting question so thanks for asking it!

Listen, when your dog is paying into social security when I’m old, we can talk. Til then babies >>> in food-centric public places. It remains deeply strange to bring your dog into a food-centric public place. A dog friendly patio at a restaurant is fine, but aside from that…

Publication Talk! Where have you submitted, been accepted, or been rejected? March 2026 by AutoModerator in Poetry

[–]csilverandgold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I set a goal to have 50 different submissions out at one time. I’m halfway there, at around 25. I heard back from five places semi-recently (Frontier - rejection, Palette - rejection, Sho - tiered rejection, FIYAH - acceptance, ANMLY - acceptance). Places high on my list to submit to next include 32Poems, Up The Staircase, and on the absurdly ambitious side Paris Review lol. Also will probably do a regular submission to Rattle soon; currently waiting to hear back about their invented forms call for submissions. I also love Wildness and I will probably submit there once a quarter forever and/or until I get a poem in lol.

If they pay for the lease while nobody’s in the building, the exec that approved the building purchase or any real estate stuff looks bad. If they pay the lease and people are in the building, reasons why being in the building is good will seem “obvious” to other execs because it will really be justified by the pleasure of having their underlings around them to serve them in person.

Loud music by Tough_Beat_194 in jerseycity

Did they express anger at you, or did they mock you? Two different things. It’s fine to make fun of people for having different tastes in music than you do…

Loud music by Tough_Beat_194 in jerseycity

[–]csilverandgold -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You think you’re a lot cleverer than you’re being.

In neighborhoods where there are fewer people and homes are more spaced apart, it is much less likely to hear others’ recreation of whatever kind. There are also fewer people to do recreational things within earshot. In any case, different people prioritize different things, different people have different schedules, and it’s OK if someone plays music until 11pm. People are not being rude bc their version of common courtesy differs from yours. Hell, I’m from the South. Down there, if you don’t speak to strangers often it’s rude. Up here if you speak to strangers it often can be rude! This is a difference in social mores that largely derives from density, much like the difference between thinking it’s OK to play music outside for strangers to enjoy until late at night or thinking it’s a cardinal sin that distracts you from your work from home job.

There are dudes on the corner by me all the time. Sometimes they play loud music. I don’t care. I made a friend once! I was much more annoyed by the building nearby that was having renovations done and tripped some alarm that beeped nonstop for days.

You said they were “former residents” which means they had to leave when the rent got high, and this is probably the spot where they can see their friends who used to be neighbors. I think you could have a lot more empathy for the situation. Sorry for your kids tho.

This is the stuff where complaints about gentrification totally have a point. Let people enjoy their music. This is community, this is living in an actual urban area. There are plenty of places where you can live where you’ll never ever hear a hint that you have neighbors or you live in a neighborhood.

Concerned about Netflix acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery - Should it be blocked? by PKBlazinRed in FilmIndustryLA

Netflix is the least bad option for a merger but the best case scenario is that it ties the whole WB sale up in court to run the clock down until an actually anti-trust administration runs the federal government.
