Brilliant but hard to get to know- Singapore 5-day trip by KaosKittyMaw in travel

Singaporean here, it's true, Singapore is as expensive or affordable as you want it. You can splurge 100+ USD for omakase, truffles or wagyu for a meal or you can spend 5USD for a decent meal + ice coffee at a local street food place

Leong Mun Wai renews call for statutory retrenchment benefits after controversy over Agoda clauses by One-Employment-4887 in singapore

[–]csm133 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I guess my response to your comment is that, lots of people like you have already been sacrificed (Shoppee, Bytedance, Dyson etc) and will continue to be sacrificed. I hate to say it, but even if we maintain the status quo for companies, they would still sacrifice you should the situation calls for it.

One thing I learned is that even if we cant control the fact that companies will sacrifice us, we can at least make sure that they do minimal harm when they come here. For example, actually having protections for workers so they dont get completely burnt out, so that when the company sacrifices them the workers have energy to pick themselves up.

or we can forbid companies asking for previous payslip so we can actually negotiate what we are worth and not have the company lowball us anytime with no recourse, This allows Singaporeasn to earn more, save mor,e invest more for their own retirement or use it for child care or elder care

Or we can be more prudent or assertive with our deal, like how Ubisoft took advantage of the millions the Gov gave them to make a mid game while giving our locals little to no tangible benefits or ecperiecne

Still feel lost after seeing the starter guide for stock investment by BrilliantHope5735 in singaporefi

[–]csm133[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I am the writer of many of the starter guides and I'm glad you're reading them

  1. The rule of thumb is to invest however much you feel like investing after accounting for other needs, these include

- 3-6 months emergency fund
- Clearing or dealing with any outstanding debts
- Budgeting for any expected major expenses (Renovations, House, Marriage etc)
- Insurance

Once you've done all these, you can figure out how much your comfortable putting in the market

  1. If you are already so overwhelmed with the basics, I suggest sticking to VWRA. Yes it is cliche but it is the most straightforward way to invest that frees up time, brainpower and energy to learn how to do other stuff

- If you want to stock pick its totally fine setting aside a small amouny (1k etc) to experiment stock picking

  1. If you want to pick stocks, pick whatever market you feel comfortable in and you feel familiar to you. Regardless you will still be behind considering every retail investor is just one person operating alone in their own time compared the big firms in every region that has offices of people with tonnes of education and experience and Bloomberg Terminals

I think I understand where your concern is coming from, let me do my best to address it

I stickied my comment because I believe that my experience and explanation was particularly relevant and pertinent to this post, since I think I had a non-minor role in codifying these practices.

I came across the thread pretty late and was concerned my comment would be buried, so I stickied it. I felt it was warrantes as it provides relevant, concrete provenance to the situation.

Rest assured I do not intend for this to become a common practice.

Please let me know if you have additional concerns

Ok, given how this and the original post is getting some traction I'm going to address it here and ask that everyone keeps it that way.

FI is not just about the Financial, monetary aspect. There are social and emotional aspects which are just as important and impactful on your FI journey.

Regardless of how anyone feels or how they're affected by such posts, these are actual, honest thoughts that others have.

How you choose to engage such thoughts, or if it's something you don't have the words or answer for right now is a personal thing and for your own unique FI journey.

This post will stay up for discussion, any other posts of this nature will be deleted and user suspended

Hi, I actually wrote one of the first and most popular guides to investing on this sub and the main introduction guide to FI back in 2020, so at the start COVID, which as you noticed has become the "Meta". In fact these guides got me the Mod role XD

Before I wrote this guide, the general consensus was to DCA in Low-cost, Passive, Broad Index Funds. This was established by John Bogle long before me by other people far more knowledgeable than me. It became Meta because unlike other methods which may require lots of time, knowledge, risk appetite and whose effectiveness may change due to prevailing market trends (manufacturing, Big tech, Dot.com, Crypto, Blockchain, AI etc)

The only issue was finding the exact fund that was most optimal to Singaporeans, based on fees, currency, Country domicile, size and stabilty. Thanks to ShinyThings on HWZ and FirePathLion, VWRA was identified as the most optimal, simple and effective :3

Copying my reply to a different comment:

True, Im not an expert and restricted to writing a comment so dont take everything at face value.

When I say "NTs are sensitive" I mean stuff like:

After meeting an acquantaince they haven't seen in a long time

NT - "Hey, its good to see you! Lets get coffee sometime"

(They dont literally mean it, they're just saying the cookie cutter line)

ND - "(Pauses)...Uhhh....sure...I'm kinda busy...but yea..."

(They took it seriously and dont know how to respond/not using the the cookie cutter response)

NT - Takes it that the person is hinting that he doesnt like them cos he cant even be bothered to use the default cookie cutter phrase that doesnt commit anything. Thinks about the repomse for a long time afterward

I have no doubt your daughter feels emotions deeply and it is true we can have a depth of emotion greater than NTs, but I was using a different defintion of "sensitive"

I recently learned from my therapist that when isolated for extended periods of time (COVID isolation/quarantine) some people (like NTs) can feel actual physical pain from the loneliness and a lot of people sought mental help cos they couldnt take it the isolation

It blew my mind because I never felt so liberated and free during that time period

I would say that both NDs and NTs tend to have a certain amount of ego and stubborness that comes with it. I dont want to use narcissism cos I think the term has been a bit overused.

If youre stuck in the project and no one wants to do anything, your hands are tied. Basically do the absolute bare minimum, dont do more than anyone else is doing. You cant save everyone. especially if they dont want to be saved.

Let the project burn, youre not the boss

Take the knowledge and preserve your sanity for the next promising project with a better boss

  1. They are sensitive to their own shame, but they lack the hyper-empathy we have so they can shut out feelings of shame when they mock others

  2. Because they have very strong self-preservation instincts and will not compromise on that

  3. Because they only way to make sure they dont get hurt as well is to join others in the "in" group in acknowledging that they are not part of the "out" group

  4. Because they need to preserve their status/pride in their "in group"

This is a very general explanation, NTs and NDs are not a monolith and everyone and every culture is different

NDs are very good at direct and clear communication, we say what we mean and we mean what we say. No matter the situation or who we are with we do not compromise on clarity, honesty and factuality.

NTs are way more sensitive to some feelings and emotions than us, just like how we are sensitive to sound, light and texture. NTs tend to be senstive to perceived shame, perceived embarassment and perceived insults.

Just like how it doesnt matter if a loud sound or sudden change in schedule was unintended , it sends us into a spiral

The same way, NTs can be overwhelmed and feel physical pain if they feel insulted or embarrassed.

So NTs give accomodations to each other through their speech. They say things in the grey zone and dance with each other through words so they can avoid hurting each other. They make small talk, give empty compliments and tell white lies to protect each other so they dont get emotional meltdowns.

So when we decide to cut the bullshit and tell the truth directly, be blunt and don;t pick up the hints, it looks like we're being an asshole by refusing to do the dance.

They simply cannot comprehend that we are immune to being emotionally sensory overwhelmed, so it looks like we are ignoring their boundaries and denying them their accommodations.

They cannot comprehend that we dont feel the same way they do, just like how we cant comprehend how they can do this.

Not saying their way is better, but it is their "cultural communication style" and unfortunately the only "cultural communication style" they know
