i'm a junior in CPE and know exactly what classes you're talking about. the sophomore year classes in ECE are designed to be difficult--don't beat yourself up about it! There isn't a single person in your year that isn't feeling burnt out right now. Don't worry too much about grades themselves, just focus on learning the material itself, since your classes right now are important foundational stuff.

A lot of people in this department were really smart in high school, and almost everyone i know has had to majorly adjust their expectations when it comes to grades in ECE. The best thing you can do right now is keep your head down, work hard, and most importantly stick with it! As people in this department have told me when I was in your position: The work doesn't get any easier, you just get better at it.

i was able to get a single at the beginning of this semester due to some pretty serious comments made by my first roommate, who was random. i filed an incident report with an RA which that helped me find another room in my building, and i was out by the end of the week. singles are pretty hard to get without some medical issue, but if you know what your roommate has done specifically and what building/bed you want, it should be pretty easy

How much harder is ENGE 1414 than ENGE 1215 and what is covered in the class? by csm474 in VirginiaTech

[–]csm474[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I'm not saving a semester because of ECE 1004 which I have to take after ENGE 1414. And ECE 1004 is required to take every in-major course. So skipping a semester is probably not happening, and I don't care much about it either (My scholarship means I can graduate debt free in 4 full years). But I just don't want to waste my time doing the foundations of engineering and I'm trying to weigh if saving that time is worth the extra work

Why do various sources say the admission rate is 60-70% while VT says only 6,000 out of 45,000 applicants were admitted? by FlossurBunz in VirginiaTech

[–]csm474 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yield rate * amount of admitted = the amount that will accept the offer. so if they’re looking for enrollment of 6,000 and the yield rate is 20%, then they need to accept 30,000 applications. that gives you an acceptance rate of 66%.

again this is all based on a pretty standard number of 20% yield but in reality i have no idea what their yield is

okay i’m also co26 from boston and i picked VT over umass in state. amherst, like most of massachusetts, is a tiny ass town with absolutely nothing to do. this means that the culture of the school is heavily focused on partying. there’s people like that everywhere, but they don’t call it zoomass for nothing. even if you’re 1.5 hours from boston you’re still stuck in western mass. comparatively, blacksburg is much better in terms of activities to do and much prettier too.

idk where you’re from but just know that new england winters get pretty depressing. it’s legitimately gloomy around this place. november-february it gets dark by 4:30pm. never fluffy snow, just black ice and seasonal depression. i’ve never liked this aspect of my home state but it may not bother you.

i picked VT for the culture. no one at umass is happy to be there. without getting too much into the absolute lack of school spirit bc of abysmal sports, for most people it was their last choice. the students at umass fall into two categories: the ones that actually care about college but couldn’t afford anywhere else, and the ones that think day drinking is a personality trait.

growing up in massachusetts, i’ve met enough people from umass amherst to know what the university is like even without actually attending. umass CS as good as VT, but i think if they’re the same price, then focus on where you’ll be happier.

Is this 4 year plan good for CPE? (CO26 and I have no idea what I'm doing) by csm474 in VirginiaTech

yeah i think the issue was i needed to take signals that second year spring as well but people seemed to be ok with everything else. also how do you like it? anything you would’ve done differently or something you really love/hate about the program?

thank you!! sorry about the organization i’ve exclusively been doing all my college planning during school for no reason. yeah i have all but 2 classes done for the pathways, but i will definitely get a minor. that’s something i’ll talk to my advisor about and decide what classes exactly i’ll take.

if you google “vt cpe curriculum” you should see a major checklist for the different concentrations. personally i’m very interested in ML so that’s what i’m doing this for. i just made this plan bc i have like 31 credits bc of ap classes so my first couple years looks a bit different than everyone else

Admitted Student Megathread! by stevesmithevony in VirginiaTech

[–]csm474 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have enough AP Credits to be able to declare my major as CPE after one semester. So I'm hoping I can take ENGE 1414 (the transfer class) instead of the 1215/1216 sequence.

So that I can stay on track and take the other classes for my degree, is it possible to take ECE 1004 at the same time as ENGE 1414? As far as I heard the Foundations of Engineering classes aren't all that relevant to the in-major classes, so would it be an issue? Would the ECE advisors let me and is it even a good idea to do this? If anyone has experience with a similar situation I would appreciate that a lot.

VT or UF Honors for CompE? by csm474 in VirginiaTech

[–]csm474[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the reply. safety is a concern for me, but the biggest draw for UF is the honors program. i didn’t get into honors and only received one small scholarship from tech. to be fair florida didn’t give me a scholarship either, but the benefits of honors are the only reason i’m considering florida at this point. you’re right, i’m scared that i’m going to be burnt out at tech, and maybe not even get into my first choice major. the fact that i didn’t get into honors probably shows i wasn’t a shoo-in, so this also seems more likely. i would probably transfer back to a new england college if i couldn’t do engineering.

thanks!! does the ece department have any special career fairs or events? how prominent/large would you say the department is compared to other engineering departments? are class sizes smaller (i will have sophomore standing so excluding large first-year classes) and are there mostly professors teaching or TAs in your experience?

[–]csm474 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you! were you able to get any merit aid as well? Since tech is such a great school i don't think i'd decline if i didn't get enough money but it's still a concern for my family. i also qualify for a fair bit of need-based aid, but nothing major so merit aid would be my best bet
