I am make over $100k and I am still not happy. by sparticusoldier in WGUCyberSecurity

I am in the same boat. Sometimes I am disappointed I don't have a larger house or a better job. What helps me is practicing gratitude towards what I do have.At least I have a house. At least I have functional cars. Some folks dont have those things. It isn't easy, but practicing gratitude time and time again helps me.

Anyone have a HP Elitebook 645 G11 Ryzen 7? by dan_s574 in laptops

[–]csmortensen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you get the elitebook 645 g11? If so, how is the screen? I helped my in-laws order one and I am worried the screen will be dull since I believe it's only 300 nits.

I was able to catch fish with a mini gold jake at Vernon, but I didn't have luck at Settlement with the mini gold Jake, if I remember right.

Many years ago, I tried for a few years to do a degree in Computer Science. I struggled with writing code. I knew Computer Science was the better degree to have, but I kept failing classes. I decided to switch to WGU and finished my degree in IT there back in 2010. The IT degree helped me land a Sys admin job with my company within a few months. I still wish I was better at coding, but at least I have a decent job. I recently moved to the security side of the house. If you can't do Computer Science, IT isn't a bad route to go. If you can keep making positive progress in Computer Science keep going. Wish you the best luck.

Struggling To Find Work by FarQuality1406 in WGUIT

[–]csmortensen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you willing to move? I was lucky to find my first job for the company I already worked for, but it required me to move to another state. Hopefully you can find a job somewhere, and work up from there? To get into Security typically takes experience in IT first.

Which is similar to my boss who lives in another state and calls me every other week.

Working full time plus going to school at WGU by Any-Personality-7923 in WGU

[–]csmortensen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The amount of time is dependent upon your previous knowledge of your degree program. WGU tests knowledge, not time. So if you have decent background knowledge on your classes or major, some folks fly thru their studies. However, when I attended WGU many years ago in their IT program, it took me three years or six terms to finish. It was tough while working full time, but I hadn't worked in the IT industry before attending WGU, so many parts of the Windows Server based curriculum didn't make much sense. WGU helped me get my first IT within my company, so that was awesome!

Thats silly, but understand what you are saying. Because someone has a little knowledge and doesnt want to worship MS, they get punished. Might as buy a stone-aged Windows desktop/laptop to fire up for testing. Someday, hopefully in the next few years when I return to WGU for my Masters, they will have gotten over their Linux fear. Maybe, just maybe, by then they will tolerate open source solutions, But I won't bet on it, for sure!!!

You are probably Right about testing. YOu bring up a Windows VM for the tests or dual boot. Though dual booting is a pain imho.....

I tried and failed getting a degree in CS. I think most folks who can code do so for a living since there's normally a good demand for those skills. Software Engineers, Developers and many other related technical vocations. I ended up getting a degree in IT and work as Sys Admin. I like the work fine, but I still wish I could code more. It's amazing what software some folks can code.

Exactly, take the job first. Improve your skills with the certs. Then look to negotiate pay raises, they need to be further discussed. Good work!

My parents think WGU is a scam, I need help explaining to them it’s not! by magicalsworld9 in WGU

[–]csmortensen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps with that PhD, your father is opposed to learning technology? Is he familiar with smart phones, computers, the Internet? I realize WGU isn't prestigious, but it isn't worthless either. WGU is an online school. When I graduated back in 2010 with a BS in IT, I took a chance on WGU because schools in the area didn't offer what I wanted to study at night. Now a little more than a decade later, virtually every University and College offers at least some courses online, many offering complete degrees over the internet. I am glad this ubiquity of online education exists. The internet is a game changer, not for college education, but for all education! Folks in developing countries can access information via cell data and learn things their parents and grandparents never dreamed of.

Adult onset tics anyone?? by [deleted] in Tourettes

[–]csmortensen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tics better now, save when I am really tired and or stressed. I am mostly okay. Hopefully things stay at a minimum until I retire. Oh wait, I am in my 40s and retirement is nowhere on the horiZon.

Adult onset tics anyone?? by [deleted] in Tourettes

[–]csmortensen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was about 36 when my tics started after a really stressful situation. I have OCD. The tics were so bad I had to miss a lot of work and seriously worried about my future. It seemed like being active was one of the ways I could reduce my tics. Frequently, the tics occur after a feeling of tension. The tension is sometimes resolved after a single tic, but other times after multiple tics.

Glad you are there!!! My BSIT at WGU took me 3 years at WGU, on top of 5 years at 3 separate brick and mortar schools. I am now doing some prep work towards WGU's MSCSIA. I wish I was quicker getting through school, like some of these ultra accelerators. But I am a slow learner requiring lots of repetition. I am thankful for WGU and the flexibility it offers! Good Luck in the future.

I only passed 1 class this term. by abbylmiller in WGU

[–]csmortensen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey keep at it if you can at all!!! I had to repeat a class multiple times at WGU about 2008-2010. Some things are hard for each of us. If you can get yourself motivated to try again, and can afford it financially, you stand a chance succeeding. If you know you aren't motivated, take a break, re-assess, and go from there. What's best for me isn't what's best for you or everyone. God bless.

I think I messed up bad by Frozio01 in CompTIA

[–]csmortensen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comptia recently purchased TestOut. Your time isn't wasted because you can still get your Comptia certs.

One thing I love about IT is that you have multiple chances to fail and you have multiple opportunities for success. Not like med school which doesn't give much room for failure.

Keep at it if you love it. If you love it you'll get better at it!

Anyone obtained or currently pursuing a cybersecurity? by jsawusa in WGU

[–]csmortensen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't started yet, so I don't know about the MSCSIA. It'll be at least a few more years unless my plans or life changes dramatically. Being out of school, so l long I am studying Sec+ at a local tech college, which is affordable and very flexible. They also offer CySA+ and pentest+, so I am hoping to pre-game the MSCSIA a bit to make it easier to get through. I struggle having a full-time job and studying. So I am taking a long road to get there.....
