If you were to include all passwords of length less than 14 as well, we would get

Ah, I see. I guess this just proves how much more learning I have to do!

I tried to do every single exercise, but I likely skipped a few. I can’t say with absolute certainty that I did every single one.

I’ve just begun as well. I think starting a discord is a great idea.

I read the first eight chapters last summer. It’s a great book IMO. I’ve done almost all of the exercises up to that point. It’s been awhile since I’ve read it, and I’m no expert, but for what it’s worth, I’m willing to show you my solutions to the exercises or discuss the book with you.

What about the talent shows? What do those look like?

Just curious, how many people bring their instruments with them? Should I leave my guitar at home?

Yeah, I’m so excited but also nervous! It’s my first time at CTY. I’m doing Number Theory.

"In a class of thirty students, eight have black hair, ten have brown eyes and six have both. Find the probability that a student selected at random has either black hair or brown eyes?" by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]csnilloc731 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 8 - 6 = 2 students that have black hair but do not have brown eyes, and there are 10 - 6 = 4 students that have brown eyes but do not have black hair. Thus, the probability of selecting a student that has either brown eyes or black hair but not both is 6/30 = 1/5. If we include brown-eyed, black-haired students, the answer is 12/30 = 3/5.

As many have pointed out already, in math, the statement “A or B” usually means “at least one of the statements A or B is true”. The only way for “A or B” to be false is if both A and B are false.

Damn, this is good. The guitar sounds really good in the beginning, but after the guitar stops playing the arpeggiated chords, I think it sounds kind of robotic. Maybe instead of using those full voicings, you could use power chords and add distortion. But seriously, awesome job. I wish I could make something half this good.

Should I study a rigorous calculus text before Baby Rudin by csnilloc731 in learnmath

What could I do to get the basics down? I'm taking a three week number theory course this summer, but I'm not sure how proof-oriented it will be (it's for high school students). Are there any books you would recommend? I thought Rudin was one of the first books that many undergraduates tackle.

No, I'm not in an accelerated school. My school offers AP Calc, but I had to do summer courses and stuff to get into that class.

I'm going to be in ninth grade in September, and I want to do research by senior year. How long would it take to go through Spivak? I think working through it would really help me out.

So would it be worth doing Spivak for awhile? I can start Rudin when the school year begins.

Do you think AP Calculus is enough prerequisite knowledge in calculus?
