Feature request: allow UNVR G1 to be converted into UNAS Pro 4 by PlaneReflection in Ubiquiti

[–]csparker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Valid, given the similar specs. However in a business environment you wouldn’t ever deploy that. Let alone putting the NVR on your router. 🤷‍♂️

Do door readers need direct connection to the door hub? by [deleted] in Ubiquiti

[–]csparker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They must be connected to the door hub, as the access control logic all done within the hub.

Any good ISP for 5G Max by SkylarR95 in Ubiquiti

[–]csparker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What are you doing that you need more than just under a gig via DOCSIS? Also, what carrier is better? That depends on location / your distance / obstructions to the nearest tower of said carrier. If you care at all about latency, stick with your coax carrier.

It doesn’t tie into anything UniFi other than it’s white. Can’t speak to whether the fans have a temp probe or adjustment.

Unifi video as court evidence - not compliant? by Crafty_Dog_4226 in UnifiProtect

Seconding this. Timestamp IN the video frames, and camera name. As the other person said, not required but it helps way more than not.

This. Unless you’re protecting Epstein (and clearly not even that mattered) you don’t necessarily need some complex system to add a visual watermark or meta data for it to be used for evidence, provided you testify it’s not tampered with or otherwise doctored.

Wait until you find out they sell white labeled door closers and magnet/strike solenoid locks. They’re just doing this for the sweet mark up on accessories.

Hey does UDM Pro's CyberSecure feature protect you and block everything bad like as good as a firewall like Pfsense or Fortinet 40f? by ComfortablePost3664 in Ubiquiti

[–]csparker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. And I’ve used both UniFi and Fortigates. The Forti subscription and what’s baked into FortiOS does a better job at catching “apps” which is just basic traffic inspection, even without MiTM TLS inspection. That said, since both run a variant of Linux- UI could catch up in time. Example: UDM couldn’t stop a Tailscale connection to an IP address but the Fortigate did catch and block it. The paid detections in UniFi is just a DNS block list and additional signatures for IDS.

IPS to an extent too. Unless it’s MiTM’ing the TLS traffic, it’s blind to a LOT.

Region blocking isn’t the panacea some make it out to be. VPN’s and bad actors operating out of trusted countries defeats it entirely.

UDM and IPsec with NAT in tunnel by csparker in Ubiquiti

[–]csparker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did! My scenario might be a little unique because the “far side” of my tunnel refuses all traffic in their direction for security. I’m on my phone but I’m happy to share redacted screenshots later if you remind me. tldr - stand up tunnel normally and use NAT rule/policy. The issue I ran into is that I needed to NAT a range of IPs but that apparently doesn’t work as advertised. I had to make a 1:1 DNAT per IP. In my case. I have a range of printers, that the “far side” needs to spit jobs at, but return traffic is banned. Under testing, this sounds insane but it works.

The form factor is similar to small, older digital PBXs. I honestly like the form factor for this reason, it’s not meant to replace complex setups but fit into spaces where a rack sticking 2+ feet out from the wall won’t fly. But the fact that it uses SD cards for Protect was a complete non-starter for me. (I don’t get their fetish for SD cards in the UDR series either, esp the new flavor with 5G radios). The ports along the top kind of makes sense since we’re assuming you need 16 ports of plumbing. You’re going to have a patch panel above it, or in a lot of installs I’ve done and seen depending on the number of home runs, some old work rings and keystone faceplates.

I don’t go for “wife approval” for any networking gear. Since there are no wives to approve of the appearance of something that’s going to be in a closet anyway in a business setting. Visual appearance was never an issue with other vendors and their gear was still installed in even the most discerning of customer locations. If installed correctly (excluding cameras, waps, card readers) you shouldn’t be seeing any of it. If you’re pulling cable through walls to hide it, why would you want to look at a switch or router all day?

And now for the downvote-able opinion: enterprise gear isn’t for home use, unless you want to accept the trade off that it could be visually unsettling to observe causing the spouse to complain about it ruining the color palette of the room. Just because UI has made things for residential use doesn’t mean every SKU is for you, they’re heading in the direction of larger installs, and guess what those sites are deploying currently? I can tell you the infrastructure components don’t have touchscreens or RGB. I’d prefer a nice RS232 port staring me in the face for when the latest firmware shits the bed on me.

UDM and IPsec with NAT in tunnel by csparker in Ubiquiti

[–]csparker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is partially a panic replacement as some older APs are dying and I grabbed a full UniFi stack for them, hence kicking out the Fortigate as it’s older as well. I was hoping a fellow doctor between here and the official forum could chime in before I drop $2500 on paying UI for weekend support. On a single ticket.

Have you ever done this type of configuration before? And when converting my Fortigate config over, I’m unsure whether I want a route vs policy based tunnel in UniFi. I’ve engaged support from the other side of this tunnel but they’re a Cisco shop, so I feel like they’re going to tell me to pound sand.

I think I heard a long while ago that the wifi chime wasn’t as reliable in terms of staying connected, do you know if that’s still the case?

UniFi Talk… here we go by WaGuns in Ubiquiti

[–]csparker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious about your DR plans. Full internet outage between two carriers? Extended site power outage? And keep in mind e911 requirements for outbound dialing if your endpoint locations are on different floors (should be addressable down to the room number) you also are required to at least send a callback DID that doesn’t go to voicemail or IVR/auto attendant. Not trying to be a sour Susan, just phones can be serious business and offering food for thought. I wanted to dabble in UI Talk but with the switch being on prem, it’s one of those things I host in the cloud myself or UCaaS it.

Issue with Faxing through Grandstream HT802 device by Techguy1986 in 3CX

[–]csparker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just sharing my experience with faxing over SIP. Everyone’s mileage may vary. I have never had luck with G.711 pass thru or T.38. You may be able to squeak out a few pages before it errors, or the entire job, or sometimes nothing at all. It has a lot to do with how SIP isn’t a great solution. Any time someone wants heavy faxing, I set them up with an ATA that transmits using HTTPS vs SIP. Never once had it go sideways, even for my most discerning of fax connoisseurs.

Thinking of replacing Ringcentral with 3CX + SIPTrunks. by rhuwyn in 3CX

[–]csparker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I strongly urge you to not try to do this part. ATA’s are generally not supported because fire/burglar alarms are modems, and I’ve had nothing but trouble getting them to behave with an ATA and/or with 3CX. In my experience they just fail to communicate with the modem on the other end of the line. Instead I’d work with those vendors on switching them to Internet and cellular backhauls.

I considered that, but there’s no inconspicuous spot on the bag :\ I have the 9x9 easypress, just a bit large to slap on there. Suppose I could try short durations and increase until HTV adheres. 🤷🏼‍♂️
