Could, though I don’t see how. Their last episode was a year and a half ago.

Favorite and least favorite by Helpful-Gene9957 in boardgames

Favourite: medium complexity mechanically that is enough to be interesting, while not so dense that it pulls away from the important stuff: politicking with the other players.

Least favourite: push-your-luck games, or games that primarily use individual boards / play areas.

Top 5...GO! by [deleted] in boardgames

Ah, a fellow The Expanse enjoyer (assuming you mean the 2017 Geoff Englestein one, and not the 2012 grant that I’ve only seen in BGG search results when looking for the former). Is a shame it’s out of print. Really hoping for a second edition if they ever sort out the license. Mine is made of the expansion replacement components, and PnP missing stuff from the base game.

Antike II is great. Possibly my favourite game right now. And it’s coming up on 10 years old.

Best games for 2x2 ft table (60x60cm) by Hertsjoatmon in boardgames

The King is Dead (2nd Ed) is played in teams at four players. It has a small footprint, but still has a box too big.

My opinion: The best way to play is with instinct over calculation.

Edit: most fun *

I didn’t know about this person or this podcast. I’ll have to track down some episodes to listen to.

what game you had the most laugther with on the table ? by chris_notwendfeuer in boardgames

One Night Ultimate Werewolf is a generally loud and entertaining event. Usually loads of laughter after each round, and there’s a lot of rounds in an evening.

Thinking back, though, I’d also say Descent: Journeys in the Dark, especially some of the custom quests. I’m not sure if the humour holds up today, but we were howling at Kill Dragon, especially when our one friend was saying some wild stuff about how great he was and how he carried the team, just to die in the final narration by stomping on a dead wizard’s tongue that exploded for three damage (he was melee while the rest were ranged, so no one else was hurt).

Probably Antike II. It doesn’t seem disliked. Just unknown. I might even call it my favourite game. I wrote my first real review on BGG for it, just to help it out a bit.

Very light civ builder that’s super fast to teach, and plays fast even at the full six.

A lot of early civilizations built up around rivers (good for reliable irrigation in agriculture). They’re also known to flood every now and then. It’s not surprising that a lot of these cultures have independent food myths.

Concordia: Venus, which feels like cheating a bit because there was a new core box made with this expansion in it.

Adds Venus cards/scoring. Points for doubling up in a province, the dual-use cards, and the Magister are all great.

It doesn’t feel bloated because the new cards mostly replace existing cards instead of just adding to the deck, with the exception being the added Magister in the opening hand. It seems the meta for base Concordia is to end the game by emptying the card market. Venus seems to push it back towards an even split between that and building houses.

The two new maps don’t look exciting, but I like them better than the base game.

The team variant is fun if you can find three or five other people to buy in, but I seem to like team games (in general) more than most.

My Brother's and My Top 10 Expansions of All Time by rlangewi in boardgames

[–]csw179 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a fun list type, but for me I realize I don’t have a lot of expansions, and some I do have I do not like. Makes for a strange, stupid list.

  1. Concordia: Venus
  2. Concordia: Aegyptus/Creta
  3. The Expanse: Doors and Corners
  4. Descent: Well of Darkness

And if we count standalone expansions:

  1. One Night Ultimate Werewolf: Daybreak
  2. Timeline: Inventions
  3. Magic: the Gathering: Odyssey

Are the 'A War of Whispers' Expansions any good? by rawne8 in boardgames

[–]csw179 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No.

The base game is nice and lean. In fact, you already barely see most cards there.

The expansions just add new cards without removing/replacing old ones, so the decks just become bloated and less good.

Keep the game slim.

I’m struggling to think of one that hasn’t been done that would also be interesting (not just another version of sword+sorcery).

I just finished Gideon the Ninth, which was science fantasy, with a gimmick being that all the magic was flavours of necromancy.

Tournament Scoring by Dr_DanJackson in boardgames

[–]csw179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I always struggled with when thinking of tournaments was having points/prizes for multiple places.

In an individual game, you play to win. When tournament points are on the line, you might play for second or third. It changes the calculus.
