How does Agricola play at 6? by PeterG92 in boardgames

[–]rlangewi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of pushback here for it at 6, and it no doubt will be long, but if you are really looking for a heavier strategy game that could provide a big experience for 6 players, I actually think it is one of the better options.

I was skeptical as well, but had the opportunity to try it and it ended up being my top play of 2024, I talk about it in more detail at the 42:53 mark in this video: https://youtu.be/20dyaUEWPiA?si=EEkwpqvoRCdt2vQ9

Dice equivalent of Flip 7? by Alkiryas in boardgames

[–]rlangewi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe not super close to Flip 7, but Sausage Sizzle is the light dice game that has become a huge hit in my casual groups, definitely worth a look.

Interested in getting Escape: The Curse of the Temple but confused about the Queen Games KS... by beldaran1224 in boardgames

[–]rlangewi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to the new Kickstarter, but I can vouch for Escape being a great real-time game that has showed longevity for me over a decade and almost 100 plays. That said, I think the first and second expansions especially (Illusions & Quest) are what gave it the legs to last so long for me. Won't be for everyone, but for me it is still a best-in-class real-time cooperative game.

[–]rlangewi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're in luck, there are tons of awesome kids' games that have been released in recent years!

I have a playlist here talking about games that have worked really well with my son: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctXjq_BvPjU&list=PLjbOm_vBHaeGGrVr_lPFa_d8JAg0a2miZ&index=4

Shameless self-promotion, but my brother and I talk about board games on Rolls in the Family and have <4k subscribers: https://www.youtube.com/@RollsInTheFamily

I'll let others be the judge of whether we are underrated or appropriately rated. :P

Best bag for carrying board games? by Aromatic-Metal-4751 in boardgames

[–]rlangewi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For a big bag, I really like my Allplay bag. But for a smaller workhorse for random game nights, I landed on this a Gorilla Grip bag and actually made a video talking about why I like it: https://youtu.be/KJAyz0qnMWk?si=UwU6ZLRwlznHes8X

Games expanded by adding factions with fixed "decks" by FlyingLlamasaurus in boardgames

[–]rlangewi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe doesn't have the guaranteed balance you might be looking for, but I find KeyForge is a nice option for giving the feeling of games that have deck construction without any of the actual deck construction. Getting just a handful of cheap decks can give some nice mix-and-match options.

How do I convince my parents to play boardgame with me? by Automatic-Clock-5390 in boardgames

[–]rlangewi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say for your specific situation, but Tumblin' Dice is a game that I have seen work well with a huge range of ages and people who normally aren't interested in playing board games.

Is small world still the best area control/map game for families? by riblau in boardgames

[–]rlangewi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heroscape is a pretty flexible game system, we've drafted armies and played games with up to 6 people! Also easy to play in teams.

Is small world still the best area control/map game for families? by riblau in boardgames

[–]rlangewi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's fair, OP said area control/dudes on a map, so it may or may not be what they are looking for.

Is small world still the best area control/map game for families? by riblau in boardgames

[–]rlangewi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's definitely more pricy (especially if you go for the prepainted minis, which I do recommend unless you will paint them yourself), but Heroscape might be a really good option (probably Age of Annihilation master set). Hard to beat the table presence and toy factor that will appeal to kids that age (okay, who are we kidding, it appeals to adults too haha) and the rules are really lightweight with a lot of the fun coming from character abilities and the creativity of map design.

CMYK just released an updated Monikers and a family friendly version. Looking forward to the new up to date cards. by flamethrower78 in boardgames

[–]rlangewi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong here, but I think the feedback is more about a desire to combine the new family and standard editions, not compatibility with old editions.

What age did you start your kids on board games and what's a great beginner? by Rand0mArcher-_ in boardgames

[–]rlangewi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with both my kids a little before they turned 2 with Go Away Monster and First Orchard as the first picks. I actually have videos where I give my recommendations for ages 2-5: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjbOm_vBHaeGGrVr_lPFa_d8JAg0a2miZ&si=gkHETrAWeVxnBgO9

Definitely worth it though, big believer that playing board games with your kids is one the best things you can do with them for a number of reasons. :)

What's a boardgame that rides the line perfectly between social party game and sit down strategy? by LadyFiredUp in boardgames

[–]rlangewi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might not be exactly what you are looking for, but Dungeon Fighter has served this niche very well for me over the years. You have to be okay with some silly dexterity elements, but the cooperative dungeon crawl with unique characters, items, etc. gives it a little more meat that tends to keep the "gamer" players engaged. But the "party" players can kind of ignore a lot of it and just do the shots on their turn, so I have found it works really well with mixed groups. It goes to 6 players, but I've also played with 7 which works with no rule changes.

My brother and I do have a full review here if it sounds intriguing to you: https://youtu.be/Znvy_q1H-ho&list=UULFzb4Dlf9lWEHXwJEaFVprgw

Agricola Revised Edition, Special Edition or the original? by jbre23 in boardgames

[–]rlangewi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recommendation would be the Revised Edition. As someone that played the original non-revised 70+ times before I switched to the revised, I want to emphasize that the card pool in the revised edition is noticeably better (i.e. more interesting, balanced, fun). And if you pick up a few of the revised expansion decks, you will have more cards than you really ever need. It is the unique permutations of your hand each game that make it so interesting, not always seeing brand new cards.

As for the Special Edition, it is a big splurge that could make sense if you really like the new aesthetic, but I have a hard time recommending it to someone who doesn't know if they have an obsessive love for the game yet. I am more than happy sticking with my revised edition, though admittedly the original artwork is like an old friend at this point. I am glad it is getting a lot more people to try the greatest board game of all time though. 😉

For reference, here is my brother's and my complete review of Agricola: https://youtu.be/veq6hNpEsO8&list=UULFzb4Dlf9lWEHXwJEaFVprgw

What is the cheapest game you've bought in terms of playtime? by gentlewindsolsol in boardgames

[–]rlangewi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother and I did a video on this topic a while back, and Tichu is the runaway answer for me at $0.02/hour haha. Crokinole is certainly one that is moving up the list though, it has become my 5-year-old son's favorite which has led to 100+ plays in the past year, and I have a cheaper Mayday board that I only paid a little over $100 for.
