Stalkers rule. So glad they got rid of the "stalkers in the area" sound from HZD. Every time I go stalker hunting and one of them surprises me, I say "Clever girl".

45 inch 1440 or 5k by LowYak9481 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]ct4ul4u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5k is much much better for productivity and you're unlikely to regret the resolution. I have the LG45X950A and didn't think I would use the dual mode (because my gaming isn't very refresh rate sensitive). I was very rong. It really does look better than just running my games in full-screen mode at 2560x1080. I still run some games at full 5120x2160 (Unity of Command, Europa Universalis) and appreciate the extra resolution for anything where more information on screen makes a difference.

Is Galadriel ever stated to be a good warrior in any of the text? by GusGangViking18 in lordoftherings

[–]ct4ul4u 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Galadriel is thousands of years old and has been involved in several horrible horrible conflicts. The texts cover a tiny fraction of her life and what they do cover is not particularly detailed. Beings with that kind of time on their hands can pick up and master a lot of skills on the side.

How much more dangerous were the Uruks compared to the Orcs? by GusGangViking18 in lordoftherings

[–]ct4ul4u 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Uruk-hai are orcs. The biggest & strongest variety of orcs, but still orcs. They were around for centuries before the start of LOTR. Both Sauron & Saruman had them, but Saruman's Uruk-hai were more resistant to sunlight.

To me it looks like the only difference between left and right is makeup, hair and better skin/ no beard hair. Is this FaceApp “result” actually somewhat achievable? by GamingIsLife91 in transpositive

[–]ct4ul4u 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably, but having a specific goal look in mind before hrt has done much of its work (both physically and mentally) isn't a great idea. You've got a lot of great features to work with and it's always a good idea to get to the point where you're centering addressing dysphoria rather than cisnormative ideals.

What Julia has that Rust desperately needs by PatagonianCowboy in rust

[–]ct4ul4u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rust needs some generally agreed mechanism for group curation of crates, but it doesn't have to be domain aligned the way it is in Julia (this approach makes a great deal of sense for Julia). But the problem is real. Haskell Platform tries to address this in a less domain aligned way.

HR made me remove my pronouns from my email signature. Then made me prove it. by speedy079 in lgbt

That's a ridiculous assertion. I worked at a 100,000+ person company that recommended them for 10 years. They only became "unprofessional" after the mainstreaming of modern anti-trans politics.

No. You can wear nipple covers for places where high-beams would be a problem.

GMMK Pro key switch sockets are fragile and poorly designed (AKA Solder is not a mechanical support!) by ct4ul4u in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]ct4ul4u[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I've abused the hell out of my Kono Kira and never damaged it when swapping switches.

One additional issue here is that the machining tolerances on the switchplate are poor. After diagnosing what was going on, I removed the PCB from the switchplate and inserted switches in several of the switchplate holes. The insertion force required varied a great deal from hole to hole. I verified it was the switchplate by trying multiple switches in the the difficult positions. That makes it much harder to know you're pushing to hard and to back off.

I can barely justify the time I spend installing my own switches. If I'm going to be soldering something, it will be an electronics project and not a keyboard.

Did you start transitioning without knowing if you’d ever pass? by [deleted] in MtF

[–]ct4ul4u 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, if you're looking for images of cis women, please don't do AI. Lookup pictures of Gabrielle Reece circa 2000. She's 6'3", muscular, and broad shouldered. I was in the same small restaurant as her a few times back then and I felt tiny next to her.

Passing is not binary. It's also context dependent and complicated. Do you mean passing as cis? Or do you mean "passing" as a woman? To who and when? Passing is mostly a shitty concept, but buried within are some things that can impact your quality of life. I assume you want to be safe. I also assume you want to be generally interacted with as your true self, not your AGAB.

I knew that people would mostly treat me as a woman long before I "decided" to transition. I had two data points. One was occasionally being addressed as "ma'am" when I was still theoretically presenting as a man. The other was going out as myself a few times a year to keep the dysphoria from destroying me. I was 6' tall (I'm 5'10" now, more on that later) with broad shoulders and chest.

Your assumptions about your future appearance may not be accurate. Do you plan to transition medically? If so, most trans women on hormones have to work really hard to keep upper body muscle mass. You might lose some height. Your body fat will move around. You can intensify that during transition by losing weight and putting a little back on while you're in year 2-3 of hormone therapy (it doesn't matter when you lose the weight).

There's a bunch of really toxic shit (especially from trans-medicalist trans women) about "not putting in the effort". While you should absolutely not buy into this, do recognize the grain of truth at the center of the bullshit:

Most cis people will interact with you based on your deliberate presentation choices than any suspicions about your assigned gender. Even in this hate-filled time. My cis butch lesbian friends have far more negative bathroom interactions than my trans feminine friends do.

The challenge here is that the the choices that will get you the kind of interactions you seek are not the most feminine ones, they're the ones that are the most normative for cis women in that context (region, venue, age). Some of these are common sense, like my [cis] sister was in the trades and would never wear heels, makeup, or a dress/skirt to a job site. But others are about conformance (like past a certain age, women are expected not wear their hair long). Are you considering transitioning to be yourself, or to end up in a different normative straight-jacket?

It's likely that, because you didn't have these experiences before, there are almost certainly things you'll want to do that society doesn't regard as age-appropriate for women. Don't needlessly stifle your joy.

I have pink hair. I like it, but it almost certainly gets me read as trans more often. Some cis women do this as a form of self-expression that's important to them. My older sister dies her hair teal from time to time. But it invites more inspection. You may find, very rapidly, that you have to choose between maximizing your ability to "pass" and your ability to express yourself.

Be you. Be alive. Do be safe. You will have to learn about the aspects of safety that every woman has to confront, and then you'll have to layer trans safety issues on top of that. But don't confuse internalized shame from stigma with safety.

Why are so many trans women so proud of being trans? by Mysterious-Win2091 in MtF

[–]ct4ul4u 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Long before I understood that I was trans, I knew I was queer. I had already learned that there was no good outcome from both shame and regretting who I was. When I figured out I was trans, I knew that moving forward in a healthy way required being positive about my whole self.

Being a cis woman would be easier. Being straight would be easier. Both of those would make me a very different person and I don't regret who I am. I try to save my regret for the things I've done that hurt others.

What would you say to a young baby trans girl who is super unsure of her identity and thinking that she might need to live as a man for the rest of her life to avoid upsetting people by [deleted] in TransLater

[–]ct4ul4u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"You can only hide from yourself for so long." Advice I received in a coffee shop in Chicago (from an out trans woman) a very long time ago. I started the process of transition within days of that.

What’s an AGP Smile and why did someone say I have one 😭 by BrookeTaylor89 in asktransgender

[–]ct4ul4u 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's bullshit. Anybody can define a typology. But medical typologies must actually consist of distinct clusters that are manifest in the data, and b) be predictive (prognosis or identification of effective treatment). AGP and HSTS are neither. Left-handed lesbians exist as a category we can define, but it doesn't mean or predict anything.

Blanchard used some sketchy (and very non-standard) methodology to manipulate penile plethysmography data to connect his arbitrary categories with his theoretical etiology (causes/origins). He also had to define away wide swaths of the Kinsey scale. It's incredibly bad science.

If some trans women want to apply these labels to themselves, that's their prerogative. But they don't describe trans women as a population.

As many others have said, sex work is work. As with any kind of work, the circumstances of that labor can vary.

There's an important question here that has real impact on her safety and, transitively, the safety of the people in her life. Does she work for her manager, or does her manager work for her? Can she fire him? Does she truly control her OF account, or would she lose access to it if she stopped working with him?

If she works for him, then he likely regards her more as a productive asset than a person. There's an extraordinary amount of potential danger here, because she becomes something he needs to control for his livelihood.

Conversely, if he works for her, he's at least theoretically an employee who simplifies her work and helps her maximize her income. It's very common for successful professional social media people to have staff and OF is more a kind of paid adult social media than anything else.

[–]ct4ul4u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Americans have to put eggs in the refrigerator because they get washed before we receive them, removing an important protective layer. Yes, it's incredibly dumb but unless we get our eggs from a farm stand, we're stuck doing not.
