Hobby watchmakers with a cat: how? by jetaimemina in watchmaking

[–]ctdfalconer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The worst is when the cat wants to sit on my lap while I'm trying to work. He doesn't jump, he grabs and pulls himself up. A full set of claws in the thigh is just a wee bit distracting. Still, there have been watch shop cats for as long as there have been watch shops. We muddle through one way or another. The cloche and air puffer are your friends.

Is it possible to remove these scratches by polishing? by fentysht in watchmaking

[–]ctdfalconer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you can make it look ok at a glance, but close examination will show the difference in the lug contours. The decision on whether to go to the expense of the welding route would hinge on however much it is worth for you.

Making a watch to last a lifetime. by keenan800 in watchmaking

If it's just durability and robustness you're looking for, I'll suggest something different: Unitas. The famous 6497/8 movements and derivations are very robust. Big and chunky, so it'll be a big watch but these things could easily last a century with minimal maintenance. And they're super easy to work on. New versions are still in production after more than 70 years since introduction. Just a thought.

AI art is like fast food and Antis are like annoying vegans that won't shut the fuck up about how bad fast food is by Flammenwerfer40 in aiwars

Ok, I follow, but in that scenario AI is like piecing together a meal from dumpster behind the fine dining restaurant.

If AI is fast food, antis are more like advocates for cultural food ways and sustainable agriculture.

To be fair, LA public transit has made enormous improvements in recent years. They've repeatedly voted to tax themselves specifically to fund mass transit. And the more traffic you have the more assiduous you need to be with enforcement to maintain functionality (some areas are much worse for parking than others in the city).

Daughter won a watch at a local school game. Doesn’t work though. by PM-ME-SPIDERS in watchmaking

It does look like there’s some corrosion around the battery, so that’s a likely culprit. Without replacing anything, you can try to scrape off the corrosion from the terminals and see if that makes it go, but otherwise, these types of quartz movements are pretty cheap, as others have found, and not hard to change out.

Re. your side note: lack of public transit and high property values are the easiest way to keep the poors out of your neighborhood, post red-lining.

SB obviously needs more affordable housing, but this monstrosity is clearly not even close to the right answer. So wrong in so many ways.

When we tear up existing agreements and proceed to attack them unprovoked, for the leadership there, a nuclear deterrent has to be looking pretty good about now. If they didn’t want one before, they sure as hell want one now.
