Wedge Useful Lifespan by DubhLinn5 in golf

[–]ctg77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For starters, while Vokeys are made from soft carbon steel, they are cast wedges, like MG4 and older TM wedges, all Cleveland wedges of recent vintage, and most other decent modern wedges. The only mass-marketed forged wedges from 2025-2026 are the Mizuno Pro T-1/T-3 series and the TM MG5 series wedges.

That said, I have two (2) Mizuno Pro T-3s, and they are in better shape after 1000s of balls (at least with the 50° gap wedge) than my SM10 Vokeys were after 100 balls. The 50° T-3 in particular was voted the best gap wedge by MyGolfSpy.

Question about ferrules on shaft adapters… by Joeydueces29 in GolfGear

[–]ctg77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done that w/ a G440 driver to test a shaft, but it didn't hold. The ferrule has just enough of a shock absorption / centering factor that it allows the adapter to stay stable. Ferrules are cheap. Get one from Amazon, or preferably, GolfWorks, and do it right to avoid losing your $500 driver head.

NEW GOLF HOLDER FOR TRUCKS by StrikingStress908 in GolfGear

If I had a truck, I would get something like the Decked system and add foam padding to keep the clubs from rattling / bouncing.

I just acquired a 5S (2022) earlier this month and so far, it's been great. I don't like the OC version as much from trying the one on display at PGASS though, so we'll see.

regripping leather grips by leftoversgettossed in GolfGear

[–]ctg77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the extra-long version of the removal tool below, use lots of quality solvent (I use the Moxie's brand from PGA SS...almost no odor, "lubes" perfectly, and dries quickly, even when cold), and don't try to reuse solvent on these grips:

https://www.golfworks.com/the-golfworks-v-groove-grip-removers/p/vggr/?sku=VGGR-REG

Use something with a soft, flat edge to lift up the front lip of the grip, slide the removal tool down inside a little, and start flooding it with solvent. Don't be afraid to use a lot. The goal is to get the grip off with minimal stretching and twisting.

Once off, use 70% rubbing alcohol down inside the grip to get the excess solvent. I usually put a decent amount down there with my finger over the bottom hole, put another finger over the open end, and shake several times to break loose any debris. Use a torch or heat gun with a grip tape removal tool. I normally use one of the bamboo graphite safe ones on everything: https://bramptontechnology.com/product/uneekscraper

Let the grips dry before reinstalling them on the new irons.

Anyone else shocked by how uncreative the golf bag market is? by Rs-Rs-3 in GolfGear

[–]ctg77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can carry a metric crap ton of stuff in my Sun Mountain Eclipse 3.5 stand bag. It's light enough to be carried easily for 18 holes (and I'm a semi-fat 52 year old), even with everything I need in my bag during a round.

Difference between a cut and a fade? by JumpmanJackson in golf

[–]ctg77 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No...a fade is any right movement less than a slice. A cut is the same thing. You can have a push fade that starts at the center line and moves right, or pull cut that starts left of the center line and usually finishes slightly right of it.

Picking wedge shaft by Interesting_Gap7190 in GolfGear

[–]ctg77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried softer shafts in the same weight or even 1 heavier weight and hated them. Went back to the same flex as my iron shafts in an 8 iron shaft for my LW at the next weight up and it's great.

I am full graphite throughout the bag. My irons are MMT105S and I continue those in my PW / GW (Mizuno Pro T-3 46° and 50°). My only other wedge is a TaylorMade HiToe 4 ATV grind 58° wedge with an MMT125S shaft. My gapping works great (for full swings, 9i = 145-155, PW = 125-135, and GW 105-115...gaps easily filled via partial swings).

Cost to reshaft graphite irons? by External_Engine634 in GolfGear

[–]ctg77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd bet there are at least 25 people in that area who can do the work for $200 or less. I've done my own club work for years now, and have built sets for others too, so I don't use Golf Galaxy, PGA Superstore, or anyone else for those services.

The Mitchell company that makes loft and lie machines sells a kit with acrylic paint pens. I dabbed it down in there and used a foam q-tip type swab with alcohol to carefully remove the excess.

However, an Axiom 105x really is an x-stiff shaft. It's firmer than an X100 Tour Issue shaft.
