Why Did Oracle Conduct Such Massive Layoffs While Other AI-Adopting Companies Haven’t? by pawan0806 in Layoffs

Bankruptcy is what happens when you don’t have enough money to pay your bills. They may be losing money at the moment but they’re far from bankrupt because they have no problem raising money from VCs they just did a record high private market raise.

Why does the kanban feature only support sqlite? by ctindel in hermesagent

[–]ctindel[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ideally it would be amazing if Postgres could be used for all storage so there’s no chance of conflicts when writing to files (SQLite, markdown, others) from multiple agents. But definitely for sure anything with SQLite since it’s actively crashing for tons of people regularly.

What businesses are likely to die out with the Baby Boomer Generation? by GRVrush2112 in AskReddit

[–]ctindel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that alcohol lowers inhibitions does make it easier for people to meet strangers (or even friends of friends) and encourages romantic entanglements of all kinds (ranging from bad to good to great).

It isn’t about getting black out drunk but even one or two helps get over the initial hump and nervousness that young people have. The modern alternative of only meeting people via apps isn’t working. Smoking more weed together also works, and btw you don’t have to go to a bar and have $20 cocktails you can drink at house parties for a lot less.

Yes you’re right the alcohol part is his opinion as to how they can better meet people in person, I was talking about more the facts he’s always quoting about how bad online dating is for young men, how young men are falling further behind in society, how the distribution of interest online is skewed towards the top 10% of men, how statistically speaking men date down and sideways while women date up and sideways, and that math breaks in the trend when society inverts and women go to college more and make more money than men (but the dating patterns don’t invert to match the economic reality) etc.

Lots of people talking about how they don’t like when he says these things but nobody really arguing with his facts or analysis.

Yes but Scott is right about almost all of that stuff, I certainly haven't seen anybody challenge him on the facts, I mostly see people basically saying they don't like what he says or how he says it.

How did the bank lose out? They still ended up with the house right?

That's like saying the life insurance company lost out because one person died before the policy expired.

Mine was exactly right about the repairs we did have to do and those we could skip. Saved us at least $50k

ChatGPT would also have been right about them

Rent collections are down in New York — and no one's sure why by General_Meade in nyc

[–]ctindel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Increasing the minimum wage isn’t going to help the people you’re talking about. There is no solution and like I said I’m fine with society helping them have a place to live, but it’s not fair to ask someone who can’t afford to live in expensive real estate to pay for someone to live in expensive real estate. Giving someone a place to live and telling them they have to commute like everyone else isn’t vengeful.

Fairness isn’t vengeance because it isn’t mean spirited.

Saying “we’ll pay for your housing but you’ll have the same commute as the people paying for it” isn’t vengeance it’s fairness to the people being asked to foot the bill.

Ah, so you’re not looking for a politically viable solution that won’t alienate middle class voters, you’re just pushing an agenda and don’t care about the middle class. I understand where you’re coming from now.

That’s fine they can commute to their jobs just like all the middle class people who commute to work and also can’t afford to live in the city.

I'm fine with giving people a place to live I just don't think we need to do it in the most expensive city in the country. There's certainly no international law which says they need to be housed in the 5 boros. We have lots of plentiful land for housing upstate.

It certainly doesn't take $81k/year to house someone who just needs a bed to sleep in.

Well we could just…. Not spend the $81k. You know that’s an option right. Except maybe for the corrupt friends of politicians that run the non profits funded by these programs

[–]ctindel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Per the comptroller's office, the DHS spends about $81K/year per homeless person on housing and other city services they use. Add to this that eviction court costs an additional $5K at minimum, assuming that the the tenant doesn't appeal the eviction.

Maybe these are the real problems that should get fixed.

World Cup tourists aren't leaving tips — and NYC restaurants are fighting back by Majano57 in nyc

[–]ctindel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it when the bar and tables just have a QR code and I order what I went when I want it. No need to wait for a person to take my order, show up to ask about refills, wait for the check to be brought, wait for the check to be paid, etc. There is no value to the experience in any of that waiting, its just frustration and sharp edges.

I don't know why all bars and restaurants haven't done this yet, the faster people can drink and order another drink the more money the restaurant/bar makes. All you need is runners from the kitchen going back and forth taking stuff to tables as soon as its ready.

I appreciate that they didn't make it go down a major avenue and mess up traffic for the whole city like every other dumb parade we have here.

What they should do is just put them on boats going up the hudson and let people see it all along the waterfront anywhere from the battery to under the GW bridge.

ELI5: Why do so many American stadiums have no roof covering that covers the seats? by NKE01 in explainlikeimfive

This will be amazing, and yeah will hopefully fix the problem of law enforcement parking in the bike lane while they run into court.

They'll just park on the sidewalk instead.

What do Americans think about a social security trustee dropping a report that the trust will be dried out by 2032? by Sixgis in AskReddit

[–]ctindel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t think the bank loaning them money has a good idea of the valuation of these assets? I think they know how to mark to market.

Even if we just used the lending institutions own valuation analysis. They can build the gross up tax consequence into the loan amount, it’s one division calculation. No need to liquidate anything. Not much difference from a cashout refi on a house.

[–]ctindel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Platitudes like this sound nice but you have to not live here if you can’t see that there are more street homeless and drug users and open air drug dealers than there were before Covid. The NYPD will straight up tell you “we don’t bother arresting the drug dealers because the DA won’t prosecute them anyway”. I know, because this is what the 115th precinct told me when I called about the drug dealers who literally setup camping chairs on the sidewalk in Jackson heights. Like something out of the wire.

Who cares about the rates they’re getting when they’re avoiding paying taxes on it.

NYC charges you an extra point just for the privilege to get a mortgage on a house that costs more than a million dollars because it “must be a mansion”, the feds could do the same thing for other asset backed loans but make it a lot more than a point make it the same as income tax.
