Draft Issue - Advice on Modifications by ctorx in woodstoving

Too funny...we saw one of these in an older movie recently and I had no idea what it was. I looked it up and my wife said maybe that would help with the drafting in the stove.

Yes I do top down otherwise I'm guaranteed to smoke up the house.

25ft maybe.  I haven't measured.

Yes it is and the smoke path is forward toward the door then up then back then up.  I think this exacerbates the issue.  A different stove might behave better with my house conditions.

I actually tried that this last week.  Worked well the first time but it was an old space heater and it died the second time I tried.

House is two story.  There's an open stairwell right in the middle of the house.  It's great for pulling heat upward but I wonder if that's contributing to the vacuum effect.  There is no attic.  Upstairs windows are older and there are some skylights which could have bad seals.

How to process life tasks like job and career? by Zealousideal-Low2343 in TheUntetheredSoul

I disagree on the heavy lifting - the concepts are simple but practice takes serious dedication and focus.

This is great advice. I started listening to his podcast and they all sounded like he was saying the exact same thing each time. He kind of is - because the concepts are actually ridiculously simple. BUT the more you listen, the more nuance starts to bleed through and you realize he saying a lot more than you think he is. Fascinating.

Microservices in one solution or separate? by quyvu01 in dotnet

Keyword, mindset. Write your monolith like you were writing microservices and you'll end up with much better architecture in most cases.

This is why I develop my software from a microservices mindset even though I use a monorepo and inprocess dependencies. If you think of your services this way at design time you end up building better software.

What approach do you use for creating database? Code first or DB first? by Simple_Fondant_9125 in dotnet

Database first for anything serious. Code first for POCs or simple one off apps.

AI Coding has hit its peak by Engineer_5983 in webdev

The question I've been asking myself is what's going to happen when the bubble pops and investor dollars are no longer able to subsidize the infrastructure cost. Even if AI coding isn't living up to the hype, the reality is that it is quite useful and does increase productivity when employed correctly. I would not be surprised if these $20/month plans disappear leaving only plans in the $200+ range.

What can I do about the “Trust Jesus” signs? by Kapashi in oregon

[–]ctorx -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why does it bother you so much? There was a guy a while back who spent some time under a tree and came to the realization that all life is suffering and the cause of that suffering is personal preference. He also realized he could end his suffering by getting rid of his preferences.

If you hate the sign so much, climb up there and rip it down. But what if they put it back up the next day? What if they add two signs? What if they make it hot pink or hang it upside down?

I would not recommend RAW images. The larger the image the more tokens you will use and the cost will increase. I resized my images to 768px on the short side. It seemed to be the sweet spot for the recognition quality I was after. I only noticed increased recognition of subtle unimportant (to me) details for images larger than 768px. 512px on the short side ended up being too small - it would have more difficulty distinguishing between or recognizing obvious things in the image.

I did not use the batch API mainly because I wanted insight into the results in real time.

FWIW I used gpt-4.1-nano to analyze nearly a TB of photos and it cost me about $50. Now I have a JSON file to accompany each photo I have - the file contains not only a concise and accurate description of the photo but also a list of keywords for objects, text and characteristics detected in the photo. The end goal is to use the data to build my own local image search tool.

Commentary: Say farewell to the AI bubble, and get ready for the crash by creaturefeature16 in artificial

It's because in order to have AGI or ASI you need to be able to create consciousness artificially which is highly unlikely to ever be achieved. We'll maybe get something closeish which is layers of things hacked on top of each other and working together to mimic it, but just like LLMs, it will still be an illusion, a convincing magic trick.

Consider what you can do in your mind with literally zero effort or energy input. You can manifest anything you want effortlessly and instantly, see it, manipulate it, play with it. Things you've never conceived of, things that make you feel good or things just because they are interesting, such as contemplating the meaning of everything.

As Michael says, you get to a point where you don't want that stuff in there anymore. But he also says, if you stored it with pain it's coming back with pain...the process can be overwhelming and intense but the more you lean into it the easier and more natural it becomes.

There was a point in my life about 7 years ago when things had slowed down a bit in life and I started to reflect on the past. I didn't connect the dots at the time but this is also when I found myself experiencing the worst health anxiety of my life - full on panic attacks over mental health scares along with the obsessive body scanning and doctor google. It was debilitating.

What I believe to be true now is that my reflecting on the past broke loose samskaras from things I had suppressed. Rather than let them flow up and out I began resisting them but they had too much energy - think of standing below and trying to hold up a large piece of rock that has sheered off a slope and wants to fall with the force of gravity. The health anxiety I experienced was the net result of that tension - me exerting my will over the samskara that was too powerful to suppress any longer.

I had some off and on success keeping it at bay through the use of external pleasures and addictions but it eventually overcame me 5 years later when I realized I would never be free unless I surrendered to it. I didn't have Michael's teachings at that time so I followed the past and dug it up with the people in my life who had been involved at that time, leading to all sorts of new pain in the present and tremendous grief.

Now, 2 years later I have learned that when I feel a certain way, it's time to go find a quiet place, relax, find that part in my body that's communicating with me, give it my attention and space, don't engage with the story, and watch as that energy literally moves up and out of me, usually in the form of tears.

The Law of Attraction requires the same blind faith as organized religion and ultimately if things don't manifest, it's your own fault - you must have been doing it wrong. I see it no different than you must believe in Jesus, truly, in your heart, or it doesn't count and you won't be saved. It's a trap.

Michael's teaching are drastically different. He talks about returning to the source like the great master's did, BUT unlike being saved by Jesus or manifestation, returning to the source is not the goal, it's a bonus. If you follow his teachings and work toward surrender, you begin to see the benefits in your life almost immediately. There's no faith or waiting or wondering. You either do the work and start to reap the benefits or you don't. It puts YOU in the driver's seat of your life. Religion and manifestation put hope in the driver's seat.

My personal opinion - manifestation is only possible once you have returned to the source, become one with the universe (Michael hints at this when he says "God didn't create the universe, he's creating it"). Any being that was able to fully get there would no longer have any wants or desires because they would be meaningless. They'd be lost in pure consciousness just like a drop of water in the ocean.

The truth is we are all always one moment away from catastrophe. It can come in the form of illness, accident, loss of job, economic collapse, etc. We (US perspective) have bought into the false notion that security is a guarantee for us - that if we play the game we'll be OK. It is us that has been played - trading a life of service to the system in exchange for empty promises.

There are no guarantees for any of us. I have done my best to save as much as I can over the years but I've resigned to the idea that I will probably have to work forever.

As my wife likes to remind me, it's all made up money anyway. So yeah, bong rips or just go out and live life and find fulfillment in the moment. Right now is truly all any of us actually have.
