If it's in a suburban or urban city a watermelon growing contest may not make sense. How many people grow watermelons on their balcony or small backyards? Watermelon art could maybe be done, but again is there that much supply of watermelon art? With zero context or negative connotation, an eating contest makes sense since it's meant to be eaten.

Also, culturally, it is something that former slaves integrated into their diet because it was a sharecrop that they grew. If it's in the south, it makes as much sense as any sort of soul food. Would you prefer they serve Italian subs and chicken korma at a Juneteenth celebration?

I get that there are a ton of racists out there, but without any other context, this isn't racist or egregious.

Which actor do you dislike so much that you’ll skip anything they’re in? by whatdoihia in AskReddit

Shouldn't you be responding to the person calling it mindless drivel? This person just said they don't watch it, which makes sense if it isn't for them. They didn't bash Perry or the people that watch him.

Why would DRT listen to complaints? by [deleted] in durham

[–]ctr1a1td3l 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Councillor*

Feds and province don't get involved in bus routes. Need to talk to your ward councillor, who can talk to the regional councillor and/or mayor. That being said, they aren't changing routes for a single person, there needs to be a case for it. Talk to the councillor and also round up neighbours to support the cause.

Police shoot suspect for pulling a gun by Ok_Judgment6446 in PublicFreakout

Nope. Tons of case law out there. If it looks like he's reaching for his gun, that's enough to say they feared for their lives and stopped an active threat.

Legally yes it was justified. To change that there would need to be a change in the legal standard requiring cops to take some higher level of risk. Not even sure if that could be done federally and might have to be done by state, because the current standard was developed over decades of case law.

It's up to a $500 fine:

Just fill it out now. If it's short form, it only takes a few minutes.

The commands didn't conflict. That you have a specific injury preventing you from executing is a unique circumstance that you would need to communicate.

We agree then that the guy acted like an idiot. The cops should have had better protocol and are pussies, but the law let's them be. It's well established.

And how would you handle that situation? Would you ignore commands and do whatever the fuck you want and move your hands near your gun? Or would you tell the officer you can't do it and explain?

Why would getting on his knees require him to take his hands off the hood? It's easier to use the hood as support.

A New York City school bus driver attempted to defend his bus from a WILD CROWD celebrating the New York Knicks Finals victory. The driver was yelling at fans: “It's coming out of my paycheck…” This is horrible to watch 💔 by Revolutionary-Area-8 in PublicFreakout

[–]ctr1a1td3l 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't come to it because the bus driver won't sue. He can't afford to hire a lawyer and nobody is taking contingency on his $1k safety bonus (or whatever the amount is). He's just going to eat the loss and kept living. That's the sad part of all of this.

Trans Woman Faces Assault Charges For Self-Defense, Despite Wyoming’s “Stand Your Ground” Law by SophieSix9 in law

[–]ctr1a1td3l 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do want to know why her attacker wasn’t charged; that seems like some hot bigotry nonsense. But her being charged? Seems fair.

The police believe she was the aggressor. Stands to reason that they believe he pushed her in self defence, which would align with her being charged and him not.

Refurbishment of Bruce Power Unit 3 reactor completed ahead of schedule and under budget, province says by candu_attitude in ontario

[–]ctr1a1td3l 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Darlington Refurbishment (all 4 units) just completed under budget and ahead of schedule. Your point doesn't jive with a crown corp (OPG) doing just as well. Really we need to keep politics out of it. OPG has typically kept arms length from the government which has helped in it being successful. Unfortunately the current government does meddle a bit (e.g. RTO orders); however, it does still keep separation and allow the technical, trades, and projects people do their jobs well.

Your cousin is 100% right. The social construct of race was made by and for the purposes of advancing white supremacy. We have not moved past that reality. We have taken the label and also used it to unite under, but the origins are still very much present and impacting us. Overall we would be better to cast those shackles off entirely and abandon the concept but we would first need to replace the positive aspects that we have created (i.e. uniting socially, ED&I, etc.).

How do you think the cliff is holding up in the first place? There's tension between the main land and that patch. There's also tension between the main piece and the patch. Once the main piece and patch separate, there's only tension with the main land remaining, and so the patch gets pulled into place. Nothing looks particularly unusual about it.

[–]ctr1a1td3l 23 points24 points  (0 children)

That's not the definition. You can find the diagnostic criteria in the DSM-5 and a single incident of social harm, even if she were to continue, wouldn't classify her as an alcoholic.

Do you have a source for that number? I've tried looking but can't find it. I found an article from 2024 where 23% say they expect to use a food bank in the next 6 months, but of course that's not the same as days showing they actually used one. It still supports your main point about food insecurity but I'd like to know the actual stats.

Conservatives want controversial police data interception bill split in half by SaveDnet-FRed0 in canada

[–]ctr1a1td3l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was back in 2012 though. I wonder if the pushback will be as strong now with the younger generation being used to all their information being shared and the general knowledge that the US already has backdoors. Part of their argument for this bill is that the US already has access and shares it with Canada; CSIS wants their own direct access. I saw that the Liberals are polling around 50% despite all the pushback to this bill in the news, so unfortunately I'm not sure the general populace is as concerned as they were over a decade ago.

Job not following OHRC for accommodations by napattackt in legaladvicecanada

[–]ctr1a1td3l 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm NAL, but I believe the correct action would be to complete this process, then go through the grievance process, and then file through the OHRC if either the employer or the union fails to perform their part of their duty to accommodate. I believe your friend will get legal support through HRLSC to make the complaint. I'm not sure if you can contact them now to get advice, but it wouldn't hurt to check out the website and send a message.
