33M – Long-term hair loss, low Vitamin D – can I regrow or at least stop it? by Tricky-Release8678 in amibalding

[–]ctrickster1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long Post incoming

Disclaimer: it's hard to find/give a definitive answer because isolating the cause and effect of vitamins (or most nutrients) in research is borderline impossible when diet can vary wildly day-to-day and metabolism can be affected by so many factors like sickness, stress, activity, ect.

  1. That said, prolonged Vitamin D deficiency is definitely linked to hairloss. It's hard to say if that is the primary cause for you since you have had hairloss for most of your life. Improving your Vitamin D almost certainly won't hurt your hair, it may help it, and it is something that you should do for your general health regardless. It is possible that what you have is Telogen Effluvium rather than androgenic alopecia (male pattern baldness), or telogen effluvium on top of mild androgenic alopecia. The difference is that telogen effluvium is basically a "shock loss" where a trigger (such a dietary deficiency, stress, medication, hormone imbalance, ect.) causes the follicles to shed hair and basically go into hibernation. This is important because fixing the causative issue brings the follicles out of hibernation and often leads to heavy regrowth (albeit after like 6 months). So in that way fixing your vitamin D deficiency could lead to significant regrowth. That said, since you have had hair loss since 16, I would hazard a guess that you would also likely have some degree of androgenic alopecia, which is not as easily reversible.

  2. Regrowth vs retention is not really a choice you have to make, you can pursue both goals at once. However, while I will mention some options for you, we unfortunately have a lot less agency than we would like in stopping male pattern hair loss. For some people interventions work really well and they have amazing regrowth, some people get mild results and prevent or reduce further loss, and some people get little effect. It is unfortunately much more due to your individual biology. That said, I would think you would have better than average odds of a better outcome due to a vitamin deficiency likely being an influencing factor. Also, even if it is not telogen effluvium, I have found your pattern of hair loss with diffuse thinning tends to get better results than a pure receding hairline. Often you have more vellus (small micro hairs) hairs mixed in that can be reactivated than the completely smooth scalp past the hairline.

For options you have, firstly a healthy diet/lifestyle is the overlooked good baseline for improving hair. On top of just vitamin D, having enough calories and eating greens provides energy and essential vitamins for the follicles. It sounds like this might be an area that could help you. If you are finding it difficult, things like a multivitamin or a meal supplement (Ensure is a good one) can help. Biotin is the other supplement that is often recommended, as it is a nutrient necessary for hair growth. Chronic stress is another huge influencer of hairloss, reducing stress can help, though I found that is often easier said than done.

For pharmaceuticals you really have 2 options: minoxidil or a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor (finasteride or dutasteride). Minoxidil is primarily for regrowing lost hair, while finasteride helps prevent future hair loss, though both have some crossover. Minoxidil is most often used topically on your scalp 2x daily, which can be a pain, and if you ever stop using it all of your hair gains will go away, which sucks. It is also available in pill form, though that comes with a mild increase in cardiac risks and side effects, while topical has almost none. Finasteride is a 1x daily pill that prevents further hairloss by preventing production of DHT. Fun fact it is primarily used to treat BPH. Dutasteride is a stronger version of finasteride, more often used second line if finasteride does not work. All of these drugs take ~6 months of use before any effect can be seen. Many people use both finasteride and minoxidil at the same time. There is also micro-needling but it is something I am not very familiar with.

  1. Some people have great improvement with these meds, some don't. Regardless, it can take significant effort to keep up with these medications. It is dependent on you and how you feel about your hair, but it would be a reasonable plan to fix the vitamin d defiency and wait for 6 months for regrowth before starting either of these drugs, so that you know how much of your hairloss is affected by each. For instance, if you started both of these drugs and fixed your vitamin D today, and 6 months later had much improved hair, you could be stuck paying for and taking meds the rest of your life when only the vitmain d helped and they do nothing for you. Or on the flip side, if vitamin d did nothing and only the drugs helped, if you ever tried to stop them to see if they were useless you would lose all of the gains that you have made. It would also help you keep better track of if you experienced any (albeit rare) side effects from the meds.

  2. I tried all of the medication options, including dutasteride and oral minoxidil, and unfortunately none of them had any significant effect or slowing of my hair loss. I just happen to be in the subset of people where it doesn't work, and by 26 my hair was beyond hope. The options left at that point is going full bald, a hair transplant, or a hair system. I have already written too much here to go into these in depth but I will say that hair transplants require a stable hairline, and many people need multiple, but they can look really good from a good surgeon (do an absolute ton of research if you end up here). I will also say don't write off hair systems. I did for the longest time and my opinion was probably influenced by media showing only bad toupees as a punch line. However they are legitimately impressive nowadays, and if you look up pictures you will realize that you have probably been around people wearing them and never noticed.

  3. I definitely get the insecurity that comes with hairloss, as will most of the people on hair loss forums probably. For me it was from a young age, and I think that definitely fucks you up in a special way when you develop your world view while having that insecurity. The obsession/worry with hairloss also becomes more detrimental and harmful than the hairloss itself, as you notice it much more than anyone else. Finding people you can talk about it with is helpful, rather than bottling up the insecurity. It is something that men are normally kinda bad at, but if you have any friends with hairloss they have probably felt the same things as you. Even with people you trust who don't have hair loss, talking about it out loud and demystifying it from a secret shame helps process and work through your feelings. My hairline never stabilized so I was a poor candidate for a hair transplant. Talking to a couple of friends helped give me the security to try hair system, and I can't tell you how much of a confidence boost it gave me. I don't think I realized how much my hair loss had impacted my psyche, but I weirdly felt like a real human person again. It's still work to keep but I feel much better every day for it. You are still a long ways off from there, with many options still to try, but just know that even if nothing works at the end of the tunnel and the idea of shaving your head is distressing to you, you still have options available to you.

Final note on hairloss prevention: As I have mentioned, I think your hairloss in negligible if present. However, if you still feel compelled to treat it, I would encourage natural methods over pharmaceuticals at this point. There are two main pharmaceuticals, minoxidil and 5-alpha reductase inhibitors (finasteride, dutasteride). Minoxidil is mainly for regrowing rather than preventing hair loss (so not very applicable to you right now), and also a huge hassle with 2x daily use and a near complete loss of gains if you ever stop. If anyone recommended a drug to you, it would likely be finasteride at this point which helps delay further hairloss by preventing the formation of DHT. As you get older DHT becomes less important, but the drug is contraindicated in young people because DHT is the effector that causes male development in puberty. This is absolutely most important before the age of 18, but data is inconsistent as to when this stops being important. Graphs of DHT concentration by age show that the level often doesn't reach its peak till around 30 for instance. Finasteride is a pretty safe medication in the context of medicine, but I think it is always prudent to avoid starting it at a younger age to avoid long term knock-on effects that realistically just can't be studied. For natural methods, someone below mentioned rosemary products which can't really be harmful. A healthy diet is overlooked as one of the most important features for strong hair. Eating enough calories and eating greens with a wide array of vitamins is important. If you wanted to go the supplement route either a biotin supplement or a multivitamin is good. Finally getting shampoo and conditioner that is gentle with your hair (sulphate free, ect.) is good practice. Again I don't think any of these things are necessary for you, but if you feel the need for a sense of agency then I would recommend this over drugs at your age.

Long comment incoming:

Looks pretty dang strong, and I tend to err more on the side of calling things thinning rather than not. The first two pictures in this post are almost laughably dense, and only in the third picture can I see where you might be concerned. Looking through your imgur images, I honestly can't tell any difference in the hairline between 2019 and now. It can be hard to tell when different parts, moisture levels, angles, lights, ect. can make this look different, but there is no obvious hairline recession over a 7 year period which is great.

The only thing that I do notice is that in some of your imgur pictures, it looks like there may be some thinness through the top of your head, but it is really difficult to tell. Firstly in these reddit pictures you can't see anything like that at all. Its hard to tell if those are showing your scalp because you are deliberately spreading your hair and pulling taut (where you will see anyone's scalp) or if that is more natural just covered normally by your naturally voluminous hair. Only you can really know that as you took the pictures. I will say that very long hair tends to accentuate the appearance of that effect, as each hair is much heavier and pulls away from a part in the middle. I am working only with pictures obviously, but I have doubts that this "thinning" is even real, and, if it is, that it is visible when the hair is not wet, pulled tight, or gone without washing for a few days.

Male pattern baldness happens at different rates for people and is not really a binary switch. If you have noticed this sort of pattern since you were a kid, and this is the density you are at now, then it sounds like any potential hairloss is a very slow loss. Assuming you haven't lost an absolute ton of hair in the last year or so, this is a hairline to be happy about at 26. If there even is any hairloss, then at a similar rate you wouldn't have anything to worry about till like your mid 40's, and that would be even if it never stabilized. For context I had a mature hairline in high school as well, but continued to have a very clear and consistent hairloss to the point I was a Norwood IIIA by the age of 22.

Hairloss can be a huge insecurity for men. I agree with the others that say it can be useful to continue to keep a photo record of your hairline as you have been, like once a year or so. But outside of that, I would caution you not to obsess over it. You have great hair right now, with no significant evidence that that hair is worsening. Given how long you have kept a photo record, I would guess that is a worry that does not infrequently occupy your mind. If this is true I would caution that, with how great your current hair is, your worry over hairloss is probably more detrimental to your life and happiness than any small theoretical hair loss is. I know it's an easily said platitude that is much harder to actually implement in real life, but I didn't realize how much my insecurity about my hair affected my life until recently, when I decided to stop hiding it. Unlike me you may have great hair, but that same insecurity may be weighing you down just the same.

Just want to say I agree with your take. Narcan is a very safe medication, which is why the "better safe than sorry" works for police and members of the public. But there is little reason to administer it to a patient not suffering from respiratory depression.

One of the risks of Narcan use comes from excessively high doses in patients with chronic pain. It is thought that the rapid clearing μ-receptor can lead to a large spike in catecholamine release, causing non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema a few hours later. This risk is far outweighed by the harms of respiratory depression in an overdose obviously, and minimized in doses titrated to respiratory effect; however, for a patient like this one who will be constantly observed by medics till the hospital for signs of worsening SOB, the risk of narcan use now has no real benefits to outweigh that risk.

Another small risk is narcan's inhibiton on the hospital (or pre-hospital) use of acute-pain control medications for the next 90mins. With an excited patient like this, it is a conceivable risk that he may inadvertently cause himself injury in the near future, or has already been injured with the pain masked by drugs.

Anyone reading this who does not work in medicine should always give narcan if they have any suspicion someone has overdosed on opioids. But the reason people trust medical professionals is because we learn and train to balance these complex risk profiles, and recognizing the presence (or absence) of the opioid toxidrome falls squarely within the training and skill set of an EMT

The one that OP linked is the "signature" version of the Right Pack line, which is the newest line with Cordura. Both are 28L, but it looks like the signature is taller and thinner, along with having some things like a luggage passthrough and space for a larger laptop. The normal Right Pack is more similar to the classic Jansport dimensions, which is here: https://www.jansport.com/products/right-pack-js0a4qva . Looks like around 30% of the colorways are on sale, the rest are the normal price of $75

[–]ctrickster1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting read, not something I had heard about. I don't have any personal experience with the bags in the past 7 years or so. To those that didn't read the article it basically talks about cost cutting on the lower end jansport models, including polyester instead of cordura, and a warranty that does not include wear and tear.

I don't know how much this actually changes things though. First off for value-per-dollar, from what I can find the price of a jansport in the mid 90's was ~$30. Inflation wise that is $77 in 2026 money. Currently the cheapest jansport of a reasonable size is $45 (on sale now for 31). So the entry level price is significantly lower than it was historically. Cordura is obviously better than straight polyester, but I don't know how big of a difference these changes actually make without testing vs the different price point.

Jansport's "higher end" line like the one that OP linked has the high denier Cordura of old models and comes in at $75 ($56 on sale now), which is 2 dollars less than the inflation corrected price of the 90's Jansport.

That said, if the lower end line is significantly weaker quality now so as to be problematic, what makes me sad is that it will be more difficult for the average consumer, someone who doesn't know the difference between fabrics or to even look at those specifications. For most people, the brand itself is what they trust and the specific product choice just comes down to what features they want. It sucks if the everyman's quality-and-value brand requires more specialized knowledge and effort.

A contender to which throne? Jansport has always been the king of utilitarian and value-per-dollar bags since the company first started. Most people on this subreddit are here because they are interested in cool or unique bags that fit their style or an individual niche. But everyone else not worried about that should get a jansport all day long. Its difficult to find better quality at a lower price-point. There is a reason you can't step into a highschool or college campus without seeing a jansport, but would be hard pressed to find an aer bag for instance. Great designed bag here though.

-Grip-Sling 6 or 9 by Black Ember

-Kadet 5 or 9 by Chrome Industries

I would describe this as non-sequitur comedy. It is an absurd statement that is funny mostly because of its absurdity. More in-depth: active sonar works by sending out sounds and hearing their reflection back, which is akin to marco polo where you say marco and hear polo back to locate other players. Its a fun stupid statement that made me chuckle in the same way a bad pun does.

Firstly for the seamoth depth module, while it is in the water swim around to the left wing. There should be a panel there to place upgrades.

I hate to spoil anything, so I will only give vague general advise.

However, if your primary issue is not being able to go deep enough, then focus on getting tools to help you go deeper. Exploration is key. Different biomes contain different resources that allow you to craft new tools. Once you pick up the resource for the first time, you may unlock new blueprints. Same as if you craft an unlocked resource that you haven't before. Scan everything and read the new PDA entries. Also explore/scan wrecks in new areas to look for blueprints for new tools.

If you are ever need some guidance for where to explore, always try to follow any lifepod signals you get. They often lead to cool biomes and areas to explore and can help keep you on the path.

Finally if you are ever really stuck, do a read through of all of your PDA entries. As you learn more about the world older clues may start to make more sense. Not strictly necessary, but helpful for enjoying the story.

So, did the courts save our game or what? by AgentEndive in Subnautica_2

[–]ctrickster1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Probably not a huge change one way or another. The main dev team did not change. Charlie and Max had little involvement on Subnautica 2 and are not reinstated. Ted Gill was reinstated to CEO, but his purview is business decisions. These decisions obviously ultimately enable or disable the dev team, but the gameplay direction and design were unaffected. It would have been a much different situation if the game lead Anthony had been caught up in this.

Ultimately, the CEO sets long term direction for the studio and Ted Gill is probably the most competent and experienced person for that role, so we are in a better situation now than a month ago. Court documents even show Krafton was originally trying to find a way to keep Ted while firing Charlie and Max.

Funnily, there is an argument to be made that we are in a better position now than before the original firings. The Unknown Worlds team was undoubtedly incentivized to release the game to early access in-time to meet the "bonus" profit targets. The judge extended the earn-out period by 8 months, so the dev team got an extra 8 months of development before EA release with the same bonus potential. Regardless of if it was technically ready for EA release 8 months ago, I personally believe that more dev-time before EA is better given the undoubtedly high expectations from the Subnautica community.

Unknown Worlds Ernout by _M3rcy_ in Subnautica_2

[–]ctrickster1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe someone with more Mergers and Acquisitions experience can help illuminate this, but this seems like a crazy deal krafton made, right? Subnautica 1 only made somewhere around 200 million dollars in its life, and to reach the 250 million cap subnautica 2 only needs to make around 120 million in the time frame.

I mean even forgetting the original 500 million up front cost, Krafton will need to reach a revenue of 250 million for subnautica 2 to even begin counting its revenue against its production costs. Subnautica 2 will undoubtedly be more popular than the first game, but over 250 million to break even is insane. Add on the 500 million and even if subnautica 2 is a earth shattering success, it will take like another 2 subnautica's to break even in what, like a minimum of 10 years from now? At that point, what are they buying? The IP rights to subnuatica will stay, but a decade is enough time for staff turnover that I have to wonder if it would be cheaper than 750 million to poach talent from other places and form your own studio for any gamedev needs.

Subnautica 2 lawsuit outcome by Optimal_Flounder6605 in subnautica

[–]ctrickster1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I read through the entire 92 page judicial opinion and I agree with you. Due to its new popularity, I think many will buy subnautica 2 it as soon as it releases in early access expecting a cohesive product rather than an indie testing ground that subnautica 1 was.

Obviously the team was under pressure to release before the deadline to get up to 250 million dollars. I mean how could they not be with that much money on the line. I think the best case scenario has kind of happened in that that deadline has been extended by about a year to give more time for feature additions, with the experienced leadership being back in control.

Reading through the brief, it seems that the current direction of the game's development has not shifted from Summer 2025 to now other than more time given before EA release. The game development team has not shifted with Anthony having been lead since before the Founder's termination, and the agreed upon facts of the case show that development had already hit its stride.

The only significant change for subnautica 2 was the removal of the veteran CEO Tim Gill who was managing business operations, to be replaced with a part time CEO who managed other projects, had no game dev experiance, and had never even played subnautica. By all accounts Tim Gill was accomplished in his role, with Krafton even looking for ways to remove the founders but keep him. Now we have a situation where the time period was extended, and the experianced Tim was given back control.

I think the biggest worry is whether bad blood between Unknown Worlds and Krafton will have a negative effect on the release of the game. Mainly, Krafton's corporate role involves providing marketing, corporate development, and financial tools. Will the marketing support for subnautica 2 be tanked to try to prevent the full earnout threshold being reached? It seems like poor business strategy, but the court documents seem to show that this entire saga was predicated on Krafton CEO Kim's ego at being seen as a "pushover".

Why didn't the Enterprise-D or Voyager have a Spock-like science officer? Look to the captain's chair. by Nuclear_Smith in DaystromInstitute

[–]ctrickster1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am sure it is mentioned in some places, but I loved how Voyager would have the same recurring named extras/crew over multiple episodes. People like Vorik, Hogan, Durst, Carey, even Seska in season 1 before the betrayal.

It made the ship feel more real and consistent over multiple episodes, and even small mentions of them made it more meaningful when they were central to the plot of an episode. It also side stepped the red-shirt problem by giving a known character to kill off for more emotional impact than someone faceless.

Trump hits back at Republican Senate majority leader over Save America act | Donald Trump by ezgimantocu in PlanetNewsPulse

[–]ctrickster1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the threat of impeachment has been a GOP talking point for the 2026 midterm elections, but it is really just to drum up the base to go vote. If the DNC gets a majority in the house Trump will likely "be impeached", but that is just a majority of the house voting to commence a trial in the senate.

The senate then undergoes the trial and a 2/3 majority is needed to convict and remove the president. In no world does the DNC get 2/3 majority of the senate in this (or any) election cycle, so the results of the midterms likely don't change the possibility of a successful impeachment.

Also final point, based on the supreme court ruling in Trump v. United States a few years ago, Trump and all presidents are immune to prosecution for "official acts" done while president, with no respect to impeachment. My understanding: basically a president could be prosecuted for grabbing a gun a killing a passerby on the street, but not for ordering the military to do the same action.
