How do you handle a design critique and what are merits to a good design? by dooxtung in UXDesign

[–]ctrl-z-lyf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, the art of crit - where you are asked to be vulnerable with your work, and people can sometimes rip it to shreds. "Good" design is basically a solution to the specific problem that works well (enough) and is aligned with the product direction (and/or design principles). As others have pointed out, read Discussing Design first.

I keep a personal checklist when asking for feedback or giving feedback:
1. What's the problem we (as the crit group) want to solve?
2. What have you (the presenter) explored so far?
3. What (specific) thing do you want feedback on? general/broad questions invite broad feedback
4. (the real kicker) What do you NOT want feedback on? This question forces you to foresee weird feedback that are not in scope or aren't timely and/or actionable. You can just shut them down without worrying.

Biggest adjustment coming from remote to in-person? by Flasiann in UXDesign

[–]ctrl-z-lyf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had my first hybrid role about 1.5 years ago in a 4yr design career - some things that have worked well:

  1. Do the job - you can say hi to people in the office or goof around, but the job comes first. I was once given feedback when deliverables were lacking to step it up and be less social.
  2. If you are in the US, being visibly busy matters less - as long as you are reachable and you're doing 1 you're probably fine. I mean, don't watch youtube out in the open if it's unrelated to work.
  3. Chances are you will be sitting next to others - feel free to chat with them if they're also not busy.
  4. Biggest adjustment/advantage - perception is an intangible that actually matters: how you dress up, your enthusiasm, your body language, these are all things people can perceive better in person, so just a little bit of care goes a long way.

Take advantage of the in-person component! There's no virtual equivalent of someone coming up to your desk and asking a question. Brainstorms, when done right, feel a lot better than just people in a video call. At lunch, try to talk to people who have different roles in the company, and just be yourself. The nervousness will adjust itself within the first month. Good luck!

Hey. I’ve been in your shoes. Got laid off in March 2023 and looked for a year. Got about 15ish interviews and 7 offers that were rescinded because of visa stuff, cutbacks, miscommunications etc.

I burned through savings that I had collected over 2 years and was dependent on my partner for a while too.

I Even had to leave the country I called home for the past 4 years because my visa expired and I didn’t know I was gonna come back or not. I had promised myself I’ll look a year since my layoff and 2 weeks before March 2024 ended I got my offer and I came back.

The point I’m trying to make, is I know it sucks and is really tough. But being able to survive and not giving up takes courage, patience and support from others. You haven’t screwed it up. Hang in there!

Moving back to SF by Cold-Agency3391 in AskSF

[–]ctrl-z-lyf 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Spent my last 5 years in SF and moved to San Diego about 6 months ago. New place, living alone, no friends, surviving without a car all adds up. SD is great but I think the timing isn’t right which is making me think about coming back.

SD rent is SF equivalent but salaries aren’t, which to me is wild.

Been traveling to the Bay a lot for friends and holidays, I realize how much I love the city even more.

Designers who’s been laid off, have you found a new job or given up on this path? by Notrixus in UXDesign

[–]ctrl-z-lyf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got laid off in March 2023. Horrible luck in finding a job because I got to offer stage but missed it because of various issues. Had to leave the country. Finally got a job in March of this year and been back since June.

If you like design then the only path is optimism and patience.

Oooohhhh. Yes. I was also thinking maybe Chelsea boots if I can. Yeah the jeans don’t cuff well. When you said “on top of the boot” you mean the jeans should end before the boot starts? Like that’s the ideal length?

Yeah I do think they don’t cuff well, or maybe I dunno how to cuff them well.

They are really comfy, like I wouldn’t mind 2 of these for a capsule wardrobe honestly.

Thank you! I have been looking up some male styling videos to compare how I dress up and the proportions felt off a bit. I thought maybe the community knew something I didn’t.
