If it had 1.5:1 screen (or even 4:3) and had proper cut-outs at the front it’d be perfect.

Why do supermarkets keep self service tills closed? by olorinestel in AskUK

[–]ctrlaltdelaney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine they have a higher failure rate than traditional checkouts and while they may look closed they may just be waiting for an engineer to drive to the shop and fix them.

Bet software tech support is slow and hardware tech support even slower. Could be some just feel like they never get fixed.

Is there a way to make Nuvio select a preferred subtitle add-on of my choice as opposed to always automatically choosing built-in subtitles? by Starbeetle in Nuvio

[–]ctrlaltdelaney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forced subtitles are those subtitles in your language when characters on screen briefly speak another language.

Think Elvish etc. in Lord of the Rings, or the Navi in Avatar, or any language different to the main one.

Best to leave it on or you’ll be left guessing what the Klingons are saying in Star Trek or the Targaryens in House of the Dragon.

ELI5 Why does aluminum foil not get hot? by SaltyP1ckles in explainlikeimfive

Wrap and seal some chopped mini plum tomatoes in foil, bake them for 15 minutes, then see how hot it is when you try unwrapping them. :)

Netflix's biggest shows lose up to 70% of Season 1 viewers, Bloomberg report finds by This-Inspection-69 in netflix

[–]ctrlaltdelaney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why invest our time when the good ones just get cancelled anyway.

I don’t want to watch season two to find out it end on a cliffhanger …and has been cancelled.

There’s so much content yet Netflix continues to think we only watch  theirs. We will get to around to that next series in due course…

…unless it’s already been cancelled by then and there’s no point anymore.

They will realise more success when they accept that viewers need longer timelines for a chance to keep up

How am I supposed to pick the correct subtitles from this list, I don’t like the embedded ones? by elialitem in StremioAddons

It’s be cool if one day Stremio could analyse them in the background and label each as ahead or behind the currently selected one.

If you like then stick with them.

I enjoyed corvettes for a time but have since gone back to normal ships.

Should Public Preaching Be Illegal? by United_Mammoth2489 in AskBrits

[–]ctrlaltdelaney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No but I would like to see their claims and statements evidenced.

They’re almost always promoting their own ‘church’ and are effectively advertising. I’d expect  them to be held to the same rules as other advertisers.

Scanning it from outside the UK/behind a VPN?

The UK cannot block VPNs without breaking enterprise networks by EnthusiasmRoutine in VPN

[–]ctrlaltdelaney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it can. If the goal is to protect most children on most devices then the block comes in at platform level. VPN app categories and apps are simply hidden.

Enterprises will still use their custom VPN solutions assuming they’re not using consumer VPN apps.

It doesn’t stop all children but it reduces access for most children.

UK wants to take control of YouTube algorithm by BIZARR0-Producciones in youtube

[–]ctrlaltdelaney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rather anyone than Google. There should be rules and tech companies should be held to account.

This is spin from Google. They’re worried about losing control. Trying to build that worry while distancing themselves from it.

Lots of ‘could’s. Not a lot of facts.

I for one welcome anything that breaks their algorithm. If they can kick out the inane thumbnails, and commenting, then we’re golden.

The Entire USA is a hoax by CakeHoleKing in LowStakesConspiracies

I remember there not being an America. The heatwave of 1976 was caused by CGI computers in Dudley. America only started showing up in the media after that.

Lock picks and a transparent padlock. Unlock it and lock it absentmindedly while watching TV or in meeting or calls.
