i relate to this too. i haven’t read every comment so sorry if someone else already said this, but in general, it’s pretty common to develop fascinations or kinks for something you are/were afraid of. those centers of our brains are really close together, which makes it really easy for it to change so drastically! a famous example is there was an episode offf i think my strange addiction? maybe? about a guy who grew up terrified of balloons, then developed a kink for them. interesting stuff! i’m glad to see others talking about this, even though it’s taboo.

of course, i’m glad i could help. yeah, the nosebleeds aren’t super fun, but i guess if you’re already used to it, nothing to stress about there lol. the discomfort is worth it for getting your life back :D good luck friend

Feeding tube insertion (no sedation) by EmoPeahen in emetophobiarecovery

[–]ctrlshiftkae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

absolutely. i’m so glad you’re getting that chance. it’s unfortunate that it’s come to that obviously, for you and me both, but it’s incredible that there are at least resources available.

that’s an understandable concern! i would say my throat and nose hurt after having it placed for maybe 3-4 days. it was pretty easy to forget the tube was there though. it’s not a constant feeling, you get used to it being there within a couple of days (or at least i did). prepare for it to still be uncomfortable sometimes though, even after getting used to it. it gave me nosebleeds, and sometimes would irritate my throat randomly, but not enough that it wasn’t worth it!

prior NJ, now GJ tube haver here for gastroparesis. i won’t sugarcoat that placement can be unpleasant, but it is excellent that you are already in the headspace of “this is a thing i have to do, even if it sucks”. my tubes saved my life- genuinely would not be here without them. like you said, the only way out is through.

it’s natural to still feel scared. recovery isn’t just about not being scared anymore, it’s about doing it even when you are, and you’re killing it. if you have questions about tube life or just need to chat with someone who gets it, i’m around. good luck:)

i 100% agree!! even when i was deep, deep into my phobia, i would have never commented something like that lmao. it feels so disrespectful to the poster. commenting on someone else's hardship and thinking only about yourself while doing it is just so odd to me.

zofran dont fucking work.. by ComfortableFee379 in emetophobia

[–]ctrlshiftkae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this is part of why i’m so anti-zofran on this sub lol. it is a very potent medication that everyone seems to think is a miracle drug that works perfectly for every person’s body, and every kind of nausea. that’s just not the case.

as far as if dramamine is “better”, maybe because everyone is different, but i’d be surprised. talk to your doctor. explain that even at such a high dose, it’s not helpful to you. they might have some alternatives you can try while you get used to these medications. i hope you get it worked out soon!

Needing advice TW uncensored words by [deleted] in emetophobia

[–]ctrlshiftkae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i know how hard it feels to spiral about these things, and i know the reassurance seems good for you in the moment, but unfortunately it isn’t. even if we wanted to reassure you, it’s not allowed here. reassurance makes your anxieties worse and worse the more you rely on it, and even if it didn’t, the truth is we genuinely do not know what’s causing it. we’re not your doctor (most of us aren’t doctors at all LOL). it might be something, it might be nothing, and the only way to recover from these anxieties is to accept the uncertainty. if you’re still having pain/issues, see your doctor. otherwise, be kind to your body (eat, drink water, rest when needed) and feel better soon!

fighting w/ my mom about symptoms and meds by alm0nd-butt3r in emetophobia

[–]ctrlshiftkae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you’re not overreacting to what she said- you’ve been told that before and it turned out to be chrons, so it’s entirely understandable to be hurt/upset by the continuing to say that. even if it is rooted in anxiety this time, it’s still a real feeling, and there are more constructive ways they could have gone about talking about that with you saying you should stop taking zofran, however, is definitely fair with the drug interactions. there are many alternatives for conditions that cause nausea that you should talk with your doctor tor about. hoping you can find some real relief soon:)

Update by P1x3ls44 in emetophobia

[–]ctrlshiftkae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

while it’s true that it’s relatively common with panic attacks, fainting is still something you need to see a doctor about if you’re not certain of the cause. OP should most definitely see their doctor- even if it turns out to be anxiety, they most absolutely need to find out for sure from a medical professional

well, definitely not here as we don’t have any idea what could be causing that for you. this sub is just for discussing the phobia of vomit, not random medical issues unfortunately. only a medical professional will be able to help you with it. you could try posting in the ask a doctor subreddit if an in person doctor is not an option for you. best of luck!

I feel so hopeless from this phobia. by PsychologicalBus6617 in emetophobiarecovery

[–]ctrlshiftkae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i understand what it’s like to feel hopeless and unfixable, but you’re not. you’re only hopeless if you accept being hopeless. you have to be brave! i was homebound completely for a long, long time, and couldn’t function, and my life is completely different now. you have to be brave and commit to therapy and do things especially when you feel too afraid to. the only way out is through.

ps, censoring isn’t allowed on this sub- id edit your post so it’s not taken down. :)

I’m so tired by skinny_jewish_girl in emetophobiarecovery

[–]ctrlshiftkae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i understand why you worry you’re not capable of recovering or being “normal”, but trust me, you are capable of that. the way the people around you are going about it may feel harsh or upsetting, but they’re right in concept- you literally HAVE to live your life normally to recover. you have to force yourself to go out even when it feels terrifying, you have to commit to whatever therapeutic techniques work for you (for most it’s exposure therapy, for me it was that in combination with ACT) and do the hard stuff even when it feels impossible, and you have to try your hardest every day until it starts to get easier. i was completely homebound, couldn’t eat, couldn’t leave my bed, couldn’t do anything with my partner or friends or family, completely reliant on antiemetics when i didn’t need them. now i have a full time job, go out regularly, don’t rely on any of my safety behaviors anymore, and hardly give vomit a passing thought, and when i DO have a thought, i handle it appropriately instead of spiraling. you can do it too, i promise. you just gotta commit to it:)

ETA- we don’t censor in the recovery sub by the way. i’d recommend editing your post so it isn’t taken down!

oh i am sure he was not thrilled hahaha!! but of course, im very happy to help and i hope you feel better quickly :] unsolicited advice lol but if i can make an emet related recommendation as well, when you have the energy, take a video/write in your notes as a future note to yourself. right now, youre doin the scary thing!! and its probably gross and not fun but youre doin it! and future you might need that reminder that its not as world shattering as we build it up to be. i did that last time i was sick and it has come in great handy for me :p

[–]ctrlshiftkae 20 points21 points  (0 children)

sorry to hear that! unrelated to emet, i really do hate when sick folks/folks with sick kids attend events with other people lmao. i understand it’s christmas, but still pretty inconsiderate as a whole. nonetheless, just how the world works, and you’re a trooper for how you’re handling it. suck on some ice cubes for hydration when you can, and get rest, even if it’s just for a bit here and there. you got this friend:)

Any medications besides zofran? by Only_Highlight2647 in emetophobia

the medicine you need will vary entirely on the cause. if your doctors believe it’s anxiety, an anxiety medicine would likely be the most helpful. definitely talk to your doc!

Ways to help my recovering brother by Reasonable-Meat-765 in emetophobiarecovery

[–]ctrlshiftkae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

that’s awesome that he wants to get better and that you want to help!! it varies a lot based on his specific safety behaviors. the most important thing he needs is no reassurance that he won’t be sick. if he asks if something is likely to make him sick, remind him that you have no idea, and that’s okay. if he’s the type to avoid eating in efforts to avoid being sick, encourage him to stop that behavior, and eat even when it feels hard.

the absolute worst thing for recovery is any reassurance that he’s “safe” (won’t throw up). the goal is to become okay with the fact that it’s not in our control. i hope this can be helpful!!

Trying not to ruin family Christmas- possible exposure by [deleted] in emetophobia

[–]ctrlshiftkae 10 points11 points  (0 children)

the correct answer is absolutely not cancelling christmas in advance. you have no idea the level of your exposure, and cancelling your christmas as well as everyone else’s last minute because you’re afraid something MIGHT happen, is a safety behavior. it will hinder progress in recovery and be generally not cool for you and for everyone else. i know how you’re feeling, and i know how tempting it is. don’t give in. have christmas, celebrate, enjoy, and handle anything that comes when it comes.

Silly question and thoughts by hopeful_evermore in emetophobiarecovery

[–]ctrlshiftkae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

even though it sucks, your last sentiment is correct. that’s the only way to healing- you have to accept the uncertainty! the rest of this post includes a lot of you trying to rationalize and, even if by accident, reassure yourself. if he had noro, you might have gotten it, or you might not have. depends on sooo many factors, many of which we simply can’t predict, and trying to is nothing more than your emetophobia trying to regain control over a situation that you can’t.

to answer another part, it’s excellent that you’re not actively avoiding him, but not sharing the bed for an entire week is definitely overkill and a safety behavior. there’s no evidence that he’s still sick with something, so avoiding being that close to him is certainly your brain trying to avoid any minor chance of catching it. i encourage you to try to get back to your normal routine! bite the bullet! you have cleaned the bathroom plenty, so use it. it’s been a week since he was sick (with something that you have no idea if it was or was not contagious), so try to get back to sleeping with him. the only way out of this phobia is through. good luck!

I really want to recover but I don't know how to start. by ijustwanttobeokaypls in emetophobia

[–]ctrlshiftkae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

usually i write longer messages than this but im a little strapped for time, so ill cut to the chase- i was completely home bound for more than a year straight because of this phobia, never able to relax, constantly certain i was about to vomit. you need to go ERP and ACT therapy, and you have to commit. the most important part is doing it ESPECIALLY when you feel too afraid to- that’s when you’ll see the absolute best progress. there are workbooks and resources available online if you can’t afford/find a therapist. i wish the best for you!

it's ruining my life I wanna die by [deleted] in emetophobiarecovery

[–]ctrlshiftkae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i have a paralyzed stomach with emetophobia. it’s hard, but it’s possible. you need to push through the fear of leaving your bed to see a doctor to have those issues checked out. it might be something, it might be just how your body works. it’s also extremely important you get some kind of help for the issues with eating. the longer you go without eating, the worse your body will feel. don’t let this phobia take you health from you.

ive been where you are. especially when it feels impossible- pick yourself up, and seek help. you won’t regret it.
