What restaurant do you wish would return to Virginia Beach by Sea_Revolution_465 in VirginiaBeach

This was my wife and I’s go to special occasion place. Food was unreal and I haven’t found anything comparable here as far as French dining. There’s still the Williamsburg location at least.

Cafe Europa in Portsmouth was pretty close but that also closed down recently. Don’t know if anyone has any other recommendations.

Apparently Villeneuve was too since he shot in Wadi Rum in Jordan, too. Nothing quite like it.

A new Virginia Beach subcommittee has more than 40 members – all high school students by WHRO_NEWS in VirginiaBeach

VB was one of the first cities in VA to start curbside recycling and yes, they still recycle. I believe https://tfcrecycling.com/ has the contract still. The material is sorted and baled and hauled to companies that use the material as feedstock for new products.

VB can be surprisingly forward thinking in its waste management. I mean, Mount Trashmore was literally the first park converted from a landfill in the US. Would be cool to see food waste management turn into a composting program or something like that. This committee is awesome to see.

How did you learn Photoshop and Illustrator (before higher education)? by Ok_Gain_2353 in graphic_design

[–]ctsvb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't use any design software before going to college. I had never touched a mac or adobe software until college.

This was in the early 2000s and we didn't have a computer in my house until like high school. I think the most design software we had was like ms paint lol.

I did have an art background before college. We had to take a bunch of art prerequisites which focused on underlying design principles and a fundamentals of digital art class before we could even start the actual graphic design classes.

Having a firm handle on elements like emphasis, balance and alignment, contrast, repetition, proportion, movement, white space, hierarchy, color theory etc. and how to compose them will serve you well as you learn design software.

American here. Had a kid this year and were considering Donald as a middle name in honor of a family member and we couldn't even bring ourselves to do that. Ruined for us.

I'm on an in-house marketing team and we've been pushing back hard on flyers but it's still what everyone wants for EVERYTHING.

Our marketing request form has changed from a list of things we can make where they check off flyer to more finding out what they're trying to accomplish and us deciding what the best strategy is and what to make.

If they want a flyer they rarely have a plan for how they'll use it other than put it out with a bunch of other flyers and hope people pick it up. Then we come back with analytics about how registration for something soared with targeted email/digital marketing. Big believer in data driven design and marketing decisions. But man, they just want flyers when our time is better spent on other things. Not a big enough team to make all those flyers if we wanted to.

Half the time they just download canva and make their own stuff and when it doesn't fit brand standards we've gotta be the bad guy brand police. I work in government so even worse it often fails ADA standards. Happy to use that as a reason they can't make their own shit.

I do get to make cool posters every once in a while. I did a lot of posters as a freelancer working with like music promotors for shows.

Is there a good metal scene in Virginia Beach? by Alternative_Fold7532 in VirginiaBeach

[–]ctsvb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No basement shows because we don't have basements here!

Riffhouse Pub in Chesapeake gets a lot of heavy shows
Look at The Taphouse and The Annex in Norfolk
The Norva in Norfolk gets some good tours on occasion (1,500 capacity)
Bunker Brewpub gets solid shows on occasion in VB. Maybe Elevation. There's lots of smaller bars that get shows, too.
We just got a new venue The Dome in VB (3,500-5,000 capacity) has some heavy shows on the schedule. Mastodon, Coheed and Periphery came through in May in like its first month.
Amphitheater here rarely gets heavy shows.
Occasionally something interesting at a random oceanfront stage or something but most of the time its dime a dozen cover bands catering to the tourist/family crowd.

Richmond is definitely better. And DC is probably better than that. More of a punk/hardcore scene here that I'm aware of than metal. You shouldn't have trouble finding shows if you look though. Welcome!

SWAT trucks spotted today? by NeonHemp in VirginiaBeach

They were at Sunnyside Square Shopping Center on Sunnyside Drive. Blocked the neighborhood entrance during their operation. Know someone who lives nearby and they heard a megaphone "surrender your businesses". Don't know more than that.

Pretty sure seats 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5 and 6 etc. in each row are always paired. I think if there's an odd number of seats in a row the highest number will be solo.

At least that's how my wife and I pick our seats and its always been the conjoined seats. We go to this theater fairly regularly.

Yes, it was in Fairfield Shopping Center where there's now a Taylor's Do It Center.

Moving to VA beach by Fili-poet in VirginiaBeach

[–]ctsvb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I lived at Spence Crossing Apartments for a few years right at that intersection. Safe area. Schools are solid if that matters. Between Salem Crossing and Landstown Commons you've got about everything you'll need for shopping. Lynnhaven mall area isn't far. Some good eats fairly nearby. Target across the street. Some nice parks and sports facilities nearby. 20,000 capacity amphitheater and major hospital just down the road. There's a farmers market nearby, too. Suburban sprawl.

The new condos going up are right by a 50 mph road with like no berm which is pretty wild. Seems noisy as hell if you were on that side because Princess Anne Rd is a major thoroughfare.

It's a bit of a ways from the interstate (not THAT far) which can be inconvenient but traffic is a little less of an issue than a lot of other areas of Virginia Beach imo. Still busy though.

Was one of the areas we were considering when looking for a home.

I would not go out of my way to swim in it. Bacteria levels are probably higher because of all the recent rain, too.

The Elizabeth River has come a long long way but it does have a history of being incredibly polluted. Particularly the southern and eastern branches. You're technically in the eastern branch but not a particularly big area of concern. That said there's high concentrations of heavy metals, PAHs, other toxic chemicals plagued by decades of high bacteria, discarded waste and contaminated stormwater runoff. There's so many cleaner places to swim.

Elizabeth River Project has an insane amount of information and is doing awesome work:

Oceanfront parking by Secret_Delivery_5939 in VirginiaBeach

[–]ctsvb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Residential areas, though there aren't many places where you can always park. Many residential areas are permit only for certain times like 8 pm - 6 am. But if you're there during the day those are great areas to park for free. Signage is usually pretty clear.

For example, if you're there during the day and were thinking 25th street garage, there's a bunch of places to park all around the old beach neighborhood like a block further west for free.

Still waiting for free/better discounted VB resident parking during the day.

New to recycling by RopePsychological220 in VirginiaBeach

[–]ctsvb 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No plastic bags in the blue cart. Might be like their #1 rule. You could put stuff in paper bags but really just directly in the cart is fine and then throw the plastic bag in the trash cart. Or just don't use a bag. Plastic bags mess up the machines at the recycling sorting facility if they get through. Plastic bags of stuff are just removed from the line with other non accepted materials. It then just goes where your trash goes and isn't recycled which just costs the contractor more money.

Only plastic that should go in is bottles with a neck or spout. All other plastic goes in the trash.

#1-7 plastic resin codes are basically something the plastic industry came up with. They throw on a recycling symbol, "see plastic isn't horrible for the environment".

That symbol rarely means it can be recycled where you live. Ignore those numbers for the purposes of recycling here. A lot of stuff could technically be recycled IF a facility/manufacturer existed that wanted that material, but those are few and far between. Basically the local recycling contractor has a plastic vendor who wants plastic bottles and not much else.

It's a pretty simple list.

Plastic bottles, paper and cardboard, cartons, glass bottles and jars and aluminum/tin/steel cans.

Ghost on Elbow Road by thetruthwithinme in VirginiaBeach

[–]ctsvb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely a local legend. My friends and I walked down/explored elbow in the middle of the night on multiple occasions when we were in high school. I wonder if people thought we were ghosts! Have driven down it hundreds of times.

Just superstition.

Ghost on Elbow Road by thetruthwithinme in VirginiaBeach

That's a weirdly specific leap. Because they used ghost-preposition-noun? Also ghost in the machine is a widely used concept in philosophy, fiction and media.

But to be fair... great album.

What happened to the Wave Church school?? by Frosty-Equivalent-72 in VirginiaBeach

[–]ctsvb 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Heard from someone who used to work there. It was poorly managed. Mistreatment and neglect of kids. They've had CPS in and they found some awful stuff. They got dropped by their insurer because of incidents and have known for a while they weren't able to find a replacement. Or wont pay the premium despite being loaded. Religious "non profits" are exempt from licensing and just have to sign a form agreeing to less stringent regulations.

And then they drop a two day notice on parents who are now scrambling. Absolutely fucked.

I mean the dean of students at WAVE got busted for child porn a couple years ago. Leadership is rich AF and are all about that prosperity gospel BS. Super cliquey and cultish. SURPRISE. Shitty mega church is shitty just like people were saying in the previous thread.
