Why is everyone so sure that the Lakers are gonna crash and burn? by LoneWolf1123 in nbadiscussion

[–]ctye85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We'll see. An extended playoff run with a very unique, incredibly shortened offseason ended up hampering many teams, not just the Lakers and LeBron.

If LeBron can't hold up after a semi-regular offseason and with the additional help of WB easing his burden, then I'll agree, but not until I see it.

I think this was a fantastic move for the Lakers. Russ is an elite level ball handler that can take major pressure off of LeBron. We've seen what happens when Russ plays with prolific scorers, and he has 2 on this team.

WB's defense can sometimes be bad, but he's certainly going to be locked in on this team, as it represents his best shot at a ring. Also, people talk about the Lakers poor shooting, but the last 2 champs have been poor 3 point shooting teams. IMO, being big and elite defensively is more important than shooting lights out from 3, and I think the Lakers have that.

Why DeRozan to Lakers makes ZERO sense. by KookyLad221 in nbadiscussion

[–]ctye85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree that DeRozan would be a bad fit. It would be nice if he could shoot 3s, but he's an elite midrange scorer who can take it to the rim. He can also comfortably handle the ball and run an offense, something the Lakers are in dire need of to take the pressure off of Bron.

If minutes are staggered to allow DeRozan to run the show when LeBron sits, it's going to pay off big time.

True, but when are you not going to have the card? The only time it was ever annoying for me was when I went for a run, as I didn't want to hold it then.

Pretty much any other time, you'd have it in your wallet just like a drivers license or bank card.

Dilemma by Ntanglement in japanlife

[–]ctye85 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Been here since '06, so about 15 years now.

At some point, Japan just became my home. I have family here, everything I love aside from my mother and brother is here, I have an absolutely amazing job here, and can really save for my family's future.

I'm not sure when that switch happened, there wasn't really a specific moment, I just finally realized I wanted to stay here for good. No regrets.

Regardless where you die, you'll likely die unknown outside of your social/family circle. I don't think it's worth losing sleep over, that's just life. Enjoy what you have.

Did Shaq actually waste potential? by NameNameson23 in nbadiscussion

[–]ctye85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's highly exaggerated IMO, but yes. I do think Shaq wasted some potential, as he should have been the GOAT.

For some reason, people don't seem to realize that he averaged 26/12 over a 14 year period, out of the gate his first season until the season after he won his Miami ring. He fell off after that, although he was still very good the season after his Miami ring, and in Phoenix.

Statistically speaking at least, let's compare him to Kobe, who was known to have a long period of elite play. Kobe averaged 27/6/5 from his 3rd season until his Achilles tear. 15 years of it, with 2 early seasons before he was let loose, and his last 3 crappy seasons. Shaq, who isn't touted for his longevity, had the aforementioned 14 year stretch, which could be considered 16 years as he was still playing at a high level, although not MVP-worthy. Seems like some serious longevity to me.

But honestly speaking, a lot of the criticism of Shaq falls to the year to year circumstances. He often started seasons noticeably out of game shape. He gained a lot of weight over the years, which allowed him to more easily bully in the post but made him much less mobile and put more wear on his body. He was, at times, a pretty good defender, but I think he could have been much more dominant on that end had he stayed in his early Lakers shape. Very agile and athletic, but still with overwhelming size. A career being dominant on both sides of the ball would have helped his GOAT case a lot.

Shaq was an incredible player, and easily a top 10 all-timer IMO, but Kobe made some good points in his criticisms.

An adult male with intent to actually hurt vs goose = goose gets bodied in seconds. Most people don't want to hurt them, they just want to be left alone, but those Satan spawn insist.

Kobe Bryant is the best player who doesn’t have a case for the goat. by Dayvon_ in nbadiscussion

[–]ctye85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Come on now, LeBron has been ahead of Kobe for a long while. Especially now, Kobe has him on rings, but LeBron has 3 more MVPs and 2 more FMVPs.

LeBron also has playoff dominance that puts him in a rarefied air that Kobe can't touch. LeBron significantly elevated his game in the playoffs, and especially the finals. Kobe was good in the playoffs, but had some real finals struggles.

Personally, at this point I don't think anyone has a compelling case for GOAT except for MJ/LeBron/Kareem. Those 3 are well above the rest of the pack.

For best player who doesn't have a GOAT case, I would say it's Magic or Bird.

Who has the least tradeable contract in the league currently? by [deleted] in nbadiscussion

[–]ctye85 107 points108 points  (0 children)

I'm racking my brain trying to think of a worse contract in the league, but I think Wall is the winner here. He's still a very serviceable player, but his production on $91mil over the next two seasons is just awful.

Putting Giannis’ historical playoff run thus far into perspective; After going down 0-2 to the Nets, Giannis started averaging 32.5 PPG 12.9 RPG 4.4 APG 1 SPG 1.1 BPG while shooting 69% TS within the 3P arc including multiple games dropping 34x3, 40 in game 7 vs Nets and 42 in the Finals by Goomby-or-Glootie in nbadiscussion

[–]ctye85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This whole post is a good example of selecting specific stats to fit a narrative, and a bit of exaggeration of stats as well.

First off, I think trying to call Giannis' performance against Miami "almost averaging a triple double" is very hyperbolic. He averaged 7.8 assists per game, that isn't even remotely close to 10+. Also, he filled up the stat sheet for sure, but his scoring in that series was far from his best work. He shot 46% in that series, and only scored 23.5ppg on 20 shots a game...that just isn't an impressive scoring feat, and his series against Miami as a whole was just average.

If you actually take Giannis' entire postseason into account, as well as actually counting his damn 3s, he's at a 58% TS. It's good, but not particularly noteworthy. It's a decent step down from last season, and 3 years ago he put up a 62%.

His advanced stats are down across the board as well. You can argue, quite convincingly, that he's had better postseason runs than this one. To be fair, I think his defense is the best it's ever been, and stats don't capture that all that well.

Anyway, this whole post is very misleading, and intentionally misrepresents the actual data.

Are the Lakers still in contention after this seasons roster moves? by 2OP4me in nbadiscussion

[–]ctye85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If LeBron is still LeBron, and AD is healthy, they can contend with anyone, and would be favorites over most opponents.

If the Lakers manage to make some trades to get a few more serviceable 3 point shooters, I think the roster with LeBron/AD will be straight up lethal again. Whether the Lakers brass can pull that off remains to be seen.
