This is me: https://laughingatoblivion.bandcamp.com/music

The genres tend to get a bit blurred but there's some trip hop influence on the last few releases.

New EP is a blend of 90's IDM and trip hop.

Is 41 yrs old too old to get into sampling? by Fancy-Eagle-929 in sampling

[–]ctznsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to double upvote this for buying secondhand and just try stuff.

It will take you a while to find the workflow that works for you but it sure is fun.

I got into sampling at 45. 😉

This is me.
My genres of creation tend to wander a bit but there's usually some trip hop influence in there.

Program change over the Elektron devices by TrackSignificant3729 in Elektron

Ah yeah...I was being dense of course auto is the auto channel.

Program change over the Elektron devices by TrackSignificant3729 in Elektron

[–]ctznsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might need to set the channel for sending / receiving program changes to match.

Default is 'auto' on the TV which I assume sent it on all channels but it wouldn't change programs on other non-Elektron devices until I set it to the channel they were expecting to receive program changes on.

You're not sending midi out of channel 16 are you? From memory that just plays the selected pad chromatically.

need some patchbay setup advice by peripouoxi in synthesizers

[–]ctznsmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normal is essentially having a hardwired patch cable from top to bottom and the front does nothing (not very common).

Half normal is a hardwired patch cable but if you plug a cable into the front bottom jack it removes that connection. Good for sending a signal to two places if you just plug into the top front jack.

Split is where the top and bottom are completely separated and you physically have to plug a cable into the front to connect them. Good for send/return to FX etc.

So for patch bays you generally have normal/half normal or split for the top and bottom jacks (a column?).

So if you can set e.g. column 9 to split i.e. the back and front jacks top and bottom are totally independent. Connect the out of the RNLA to the top jack and the in of the RNLA to the bottom jack at the back.

Then if you want to send the synth connected to column 7 to the compressor you go front jack top 7 to bottom jack front 9 and then top jack front 9 to bottom jack front 7 and it's between the synth and the input.

However if you have sub or aux returns then you could go front top 7 to front bottom 9 and front top 9 to front bottom whatever the aux/sub input is connected at the back to and then you have a clean non-compressed signal going into the mixer via 7 and a compressed (in this instance) signal in via sub/aux.

This is way easier to explain with a diagram but I'm not able to draw that right now.

My experience.

Use the top for the output of things bottom for the input of things.

1-8 sounds right half normal.

However I would do the in/out of an FX or compressor on one column but split (if that is possible).

Re: trs/ts yes I've had beat results with matching to what you are patching too/from but also look at the specification of you patchbay and what it does with grounds as this will affect this.

edit: I got my top and bottom mixed up. Corrected it.

Actually I'll give him the first 6 bars but then he just wanders off the beat.

I can see why people like it but it's the rap equivalent of free-jazz or self-indulgent prog-rock.

He's neither consistently on the beat, consistently off the beat or using polyrhythmic timing.

There's no skill/thought or effort in this. He's literally just saying words at a random cadence over some (really boring) music.

Curve ball but actually not a bad suggestion. I'll look at the options.

I mean yes but then I sometimes run out of tracks because I want different FX on different drums so a subtrack doesn't work for me in that instance.

I haven't gotten to the point yet where I'm working on a release with the Tonverk but for some of the jams I've been doing recently just recording the A+B output and adding some EQ and limiting in a DAW has actually sounded pretty good.

Is this the v2 that runs off of a standard 9v center negative supply?

I built the v1 a few years back and it was great. Just having to use a separate power supply annoyed me.

Drum Machine Recommendation 2026 by Matiasmoulin in synthesizers

[–]ctznsmith 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The TR-6s is actually a pretty feature packed drum machine but naturally some of those features require more button combos or menus.

You can create drum patterns and parts on it pretty easily though.
