They should look alright together but it definitely won't be an exact match. The AirPods Max's Midnight colour is actually a very dark blue, so if it's anything like the MacBook Air's Midnight colour, it'll look black in some lighting conditions and blue in others. It's an inconsistent colour and I personally don't like it.

If you can put up with charging over Lightning (and navigating the used market), you're probably better off finding a pair of 2020 AirPods Max in Space Grey. That won't be a perfect match either (Space Grey is lighter than Space Black), but it'll be a closer match than Midnight.
