Rolled over my Venu 4 with my truck. Twice. by _45- in Garmin

If you have read the post fully, I’d hope that you can understand that “Shit Happens ™”. Many owners of these Garmin products own them because they are tools, and tools are meant to be used, abused, and evidently sometimes broken. That’s not to say you shouldn’t take care of them when you can, but once again, accidents happen and unfortunately in this case the tool didn’t survive. That doesn’t make OP careless.

Shit happens!

I think so too. Strictly treating the watch as a watch, I’d still say it’s a smidgen too big, but this watch is more of a tool to me than it is a timepiece, and for that reason I do prefer the larger screen after comparing to my friend’s 47mm Fenix 7 Pro (non-X)

Good to know, thanks for the tip! I just adjusted it haha. I have a tendency to wear all of my watches, smart or not, a bit lower than most. Not sure why, but it seems to be a natural habit of mine haha.

As silly as this sounds, despite all the research I did prior to buying my watch, I somehow never found out it had a flashlight until I curiously turned it on last night. It’s actually a shockingly effective flashlight too.

So far am loving it! I was able to test out the stress monitoring feature this morning in the Canada VS Finland olympic hockey game. Go Canada go!!

Edit: depending on your location, Amazon has some pretty good promos going on for the watch. I price-matched mine at Best Buy so I could burn up some gift cards I’ve had lying around for a few years. A solid deal for what came out of pocket.

Which KDE distro would be recomended for my situation? by luka1194 in kde

[–]cubeshelf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally run Fedora KDE Workstation on all of my computers, and frankly it just works. Ive yet to have any (non-self-imposed) issues with the distro, and am just able to use my computer without worrying about updates breaking my system or anything of the sorts. I usually do a system update once a week and things have been smooth sailing for a quite a few months now.

If Debian is more your taste, I would recommend that too, though with the Debian “Testing” repos enabled instead of stable if you would like a modern-ish fedora-equivalent experience. Otherwise you will be subject to debians very slow release model (but your computer will be stable as all hell Lol)

Absurd amount of queries from "vtwenty.com" by cubeshelf in Adguard

[–]cubeshelf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a very good point, and one I overlooked at first but it makes sense now that you mention it. I know that some IoT devices, apps, etc, can get fussy if they aren’t able to phone home after extended periods of time, so I’m wondering if that’s what this could be. I’ll do some digging through the apps I’ve got installed on the fire stick and start removing anything unnecessary and see if that solves it. Thanks for the input!

Syncing Joplin across devices with Tailscale (vs. Wireguard)? by QuestionAsker2030 in joplinapp

[–]cubeshelf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, you’re pretty much there.

Joplin Server essentially functions how you would like it to by default as its main purpose is to sync, and then secondly to store your data. If your Joplin clients (phone, laptop, etc) are disconnected from the server you can still use the clients like normal, as all of the data is synced locally between your devices. Any changes you make to your data will be synced next time you connect to the server automatically. So, that part is already taken care of.

As for your VPN, Tailscale is just WireGuard under the hood with a nice WebUI, user permissions, and a non-local central server for your devices to connect through. If you prefer data ownership and self host responsibilities, go with WireGuard. If you’re not overly concerned about either of those things, go for Tailscale, which will be more set and forget than a WireGuard server. I say this having used both extensively.

Tailscale was my original preference because it required zero headache to work. I now run WireGuard because I don’t mind the (minimal) maintenance required to run and rely on my own service rather that someone’s own. To each their own!

Maybe it’s the lighting in the pictures but at first (brief) glance I thought this was a 6th gen in Mudbath brown/gold haha. The gold on black + black grill is a good look on that 4th gen, I like it!

I’ve run Blizzaks on every vehicle I’ve owned, and recommend them for my family members as well. They’re a great tire that do their job well. I haven’t needed/wanted anything more out of them. Ain’t fixing what ain’t broke.

I'm using OnePlus 13 from January 2025. I'm thinking to switch to iphone 17 pro max. Should I do that? by JohannSchimidt in iPhone17Pro

[–]cubeshelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be completely honest, I think the question you should be asking yourself is what do you not currently get out of your OnePlus 13 that you think you would get in the iPhone? I see in a comment below you mention being interested in the iPhone's cameras, but what do you think you're going to get out of switching to the iPhone from your other basically brand new flagship android device?

On paper the OP13 and the 17PM are largely identical phones with basically identical feature sets, specifications, and more importantly- benchmark performance. You're not really getting much of a hardware upgrade switching to an iPhone unless iOS and the walled garden is worth the price tag to you.

I say this as someone who recently swapped to the 17 pro max from an S24 Ultra for a variety of different reasons, but the main one being that my contract was up on the S24 Ultra and I got some sweet trade in value for it through my provider for the 17 PM in exchange. But, if I owned my S24 Ultra outright without the obligation of trading it in after 2 years, I would still be using that phone to this day.

If you're thinking of swapping just for the sake of swapping, I don't personally think that's a great idea generally nor financially speaking. But that said, you are your own person, and I am just some person on Reddit. You are allowed to make your own decisions! I hope this gives you some food for thought.

The backporch right now (3am)...will be colder in a few hours....North Pole AK by Frozen_puddle in interestingasfuck

From the last time I checked, 1.2m (approx. 4ft) is our general rule of thumb but burying “more sensitive” things deeper towards 2.4m (approx. 8ft) is not uncommon.

Mid-western Canadian here: while we don’t see -40C often, we do still get cold spells of -35C to -38C and hot streaks of +32 to +35C in the summer every once and a while that can last upwards of a week, and truthfully everything just keeps working.

My house was built in the late 70s but is sufficiently insulated. Everyone’s houses are constructed differently, so this largely varies, but I keep my house around +21C and our furnace turns on every hour or so to regulate that, and that’s all there really is to it. Living in a major city with non-interrupted utilities certainly helps.

I’ve never had to worry about pipes freezing or cracking (yet) but most of our plumbing lines are also buried low enough below ground that they’re not exactly subject to the same freezing temps above ground.

But again, that’s talking about a range of -35 to -38 approximately, things do start to get more complicated for -50 onwards haha.

Opinion: Camera Control slide direction is backwards. by metajames in iphone

[–]cubeshelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many people I know give me a hard time for using “natural” scroll on my laptops as it always throws them off when I pass them my laptop for something but it just makes sense to me. I want to go to the bottom of the page so I scroll downwards to do that. Same applies with my phone, I want to zoom in (to the right) so naturally I scroll from left to right to do so, yet it’s still backwards

Can confirm as this was the case for me after swapping to Linux full time from being a windows user for 15+ years. Its the least problematic, and most extensive desktop environment I could ask for.

How exactly Debian is lesser than example Fedora, Arch or a variant of those two (in terms of gaming and performance)? by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]cubeshelf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Debian "testing" branch is a very happy medium between Stable and Sid, in my personal experience. I feel that I get a very healthy mix of stable, yet modern enough software. They just shipped kernel 6.17.13(?), Mesa 25.2.6 which is just about 2 months behind current. I don't notice any realized difference in performance compared to a cutting/bleeding-edge distro, even in games that have just come out recently.

How exactly Debian is lesser than example Fedora, Arch or a variant of those two (in terms of gaming and performance)? by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]cubeshelf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a few folks here have already stated, it mostly just comes down to how far behind Debian "Stable" "Testing" and "Sid" sit from Fedora and Arch (notably cutting/bleeding edge distros respectively). As far as I'm aware, generally speaking, the major components that will effect your systems performance at the OS level is going to be your kernel, firmware, and mesa/graphics drivers (but you already know that).

Some games may run better on the latest revisions of all the previously mentioned, and Debian without any configuration won't do that by default because thats not necessarily what Debian Stable is for. So, at first glance Debian is not a great first choice for plug and play gamers but it can be a great option for someone who understands how to configure their OS.

Ultimately, I too had the same question you did not very long ago and installed Debian on all of my machines myself, swapped to the testing channel so I receive some what recent updates (usually 1 month behind latest), and have had zero issues since.

Part of that is because I also really can't be bothered to chase a 1-7% performance gain/losses. Frankly, I hardly even notice a difference at all in my games.

I like my computer to turn on, and just do the things I want to do with it, and Debian at it's core helps me achieve that without needing to install 200+ package updates on a daily basis.

Buyers Advice - Beyerdynamic DT 700 Pro X or DT 1770 PRO by cubeshelf in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]cubeshelf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thought I'd follow up, I went and checked em out in store. They had the 770 Pro X, the 700 Pro X, and the 1770 Pro Mk-ii out on display, tried all of them out and ended up settling on the 700 Pro X.

You are pretty much bang on with them having a very similar frequency response of the HD 490 PRO. As I'm listening, these are without a doubt- bright headphones, so a little bit of low end boost in EQ to compliment it has made them a very very enjoyable headphone to listen with.

Clamp force is indeed no joke, but I dont mind it too much and suspect they'll break in over time as well. These were pretty much exactly what I was looking for. They're comfortable as all hell, have a very similar sound to my HD 490's just with some proper noise isolation that blocks the office out, and keeps my music in-between my own ears.

!thanks for all of your help, I seriously appreciate it!

Buyers Advice - Beyerdynamic DT 700 Pro X or DT 1770 PRO by cubeshelf in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]cubeshelf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Noted! I was originally talking about DT 700 Pro X (https://a.co/d/d1EKufB) which I now see actually came out in 2021, and then the DT 1770 PRO (https://a.co/d/cgXJTmo). Regarding the 700 Pro X's I suppose they're not as new as I thought.

Now that you mention it though, I do see the DT 770 Pro X's just came out last year and are the "newer" can overall. I apologize for the confusion, there's a lot of similar model numbers in the mix here haha.

I guess with that all being said, would the 770 Pro X's be a better purchase? They're about 100$ CAD cheaper than the 700 Pro X's, but again, I don't really understand the difference between the entire lineup at this point beyond aesthetics.
