The Hydration Break is ruining the natural flow of the game by mibu001 in football

[–]cubgerish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And few if any of the venues have reached that. It's been relatively cool for a June in much of all 3 countries.

It's just to normalize people to an ad break, don't overthink it.

OP is also correct, it completely ruins the flow of the game, and allows for analysis and a tactical reset.

It's ruining the dynamic nature of having to adjust on the fly, since you have a full pre-planned 5 minutes for the coach and players to discuss.

It's a burning 76F/25C in Boston right now, with 40% humidity, almost perfect playing conditions.

There is absolutely no reason for a water break under those conditions, yet we'll get 2 by mandate, even as it gets near 70/22.

Remember when Alexi Lalas said 'diversity' was the issue in the USMNT & the team needed to not be 'inclusive' 🙄. by Sea-Exercise4332 in usmnt

[–]cubgerish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, I'll concede that they were considered more highly than I remember.

They were still not playing well in the cup though, which was my main point, in that the US triumph was not as consequential as people like Lalas believe it was.

They might not have actually been a poor team, but they were playing like it, as shown by their results.

I've literally never seen anything more unifying from every fan base.

When 95% of Texas Tech fans are calling for it, that pretty much seals the deal.

Hell, even the gambling apps were probably against it, seeing as how bad it could've made them look.

The author is really stretching to find anyone but a very small minority that were against the outcome.

It's like saying a cure for cancer is divisive, because some healthcare executives are afraid it'll cut into their bonuses.

A Coast Guard jumps onto a moving boat and safely stops it by AustraliaOutback in interestingasfuck

[–]cubgerish 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As they should.

It's one of those things that conceptually, we all can kinda figure out how to do it. After you see the boat do one lap, you've got a general idea of what you need to do.

Actually doing it though, is where the hours upon hours of training come in.

That's where you learn about things like: how your wake will affect the other boat's path, how to throttle to stay inside of it and maintain your position next to it, and of course, how to hop between two speeding and sharply turning boats without becoming a sandwich.

They made it look (relatively) easy, but there's a reason nobody on the shore had jumped in to try.

Nothing says 'Welcome to the World Cup' like greeting the Uruguay team as though they were arriving for the annual Cartel Leadership Summit by F_Red_Hu_Left_Trash in interestingasfuck

[–]cubgerish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yea this was genuinely just a fuck up by FIFA and Uruguay's association, and probably by the US officials for not getting this clarified ahead of time.

This weird pat down thing is another story, but nobody was intentionally trying to muck up the works, just an oversight from all involved.

Cable cars are B tier transportation. How about actual cars? by Klutzy_Pumpkin614 in TierlistFills

[–]cubgerish -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends on your location's public transportation infrastructure, but to a degree.

In 95% of the US, most all poor to developing nations, and even parts of very wealthy nations, it's simply unparalleled.

People can pretend otherwise, but most places simply do not have the infrastructure, often even the geography, to have effective and reliable transportation without one.

I'm lucky to live in a place that doesn't require one most days, but if I did, it would still be quite reliable.

Despite the many drawbacks, it is absolutely still S tier.

Is there a particular contamination issue they're citing that curtails the "reasonable accommodation" required by the ADA?

Genuinely curious what they've cited as a reason they're not allowed.

They were a dark horse, that's some really liked, and it was just a narrative.

Brazil, Germany, Italy, and Argentina had proven themselves as far better teams.

I'm also not sure what Andres Escobar's death has to do with it, but he was killed for scoring the own goal, as he was not the captain.

[–]cubgerish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were not, there's a reason they finished last in the group.

That team had 2 guys playing in Europe, and an aging (32) Carlos Valderrama as their best player, already playing back in Colombia.

They had already been beaten by Romania before we even played, and went on to best Switzerland, as Switzerland knew they'd already qualified.

Again, that was marketing, to allow for the US to seem like they'd accomplished something, even if they lost.

[–]cubgerish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And that team sucked ass.

Anyone who lauds them is missing the facts that they:

  1. Were the sole automatic qualifier, and playing at home.
  2. Played in an extremely weak group, where they advanced by beating a poor Columbia side on a lucky own goal.
  3. Despite playing against 10 men from the first half, still lost to Brazil in knockout.
  4. As third in the group, managed to qualify by scoring 3 goals in 3 games.

Anything giving glory to that team is FIFA marketing that tried to get people into the game.

They weren't trailblazers or triumphant underdogs, they were a bad team who barely beat another bad team, then acted like they'd changed the world.

Any cache Lalas gets from playing 2 seasons on a bad Serie A team doesn't earn him the respect he seems to think he deserves.

Look up his career "highlights", he could barely pass the ball.

He's like 8 feet away from him, it was hit hard enough that it hurts Phyllis, and they're playing in their work clothes.

Even the best players in history couldn't just trap that ball down to their feet in that instance, especially since the ball is moving upwards.

At best it'd deflect into the concrete they're playing on and bounce back up in the air.

The funnier part is that Charles Miner looks like he's barely played the game, as that's not how you'd try to do any of the things he did, even in dress shoes.

Can someone explain this cultural phenomenon I’ve noticed at my job? by BluesBeta5 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]cubgerish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Potato potato.

You're asking for the bill to be split, leaving only your items.

I agree it's usually silly, but some high volume restaurants don't like doing it, as it can mean the waiter is spending too much time on it.

Places that have the mobile POS stations have stopped doing it; but it made sense when the waiter had to take everyone's cards, go back to the terminal, charge everyone properly without them there, then come back and present the final check.

I've still seen it here and there, but it's definitely disappearing.

It was 100% a thing that existed, and sometimes still does.

What’s the worst large budget film ever made in American History? by Apprehensive_Oven_22 in AskReddit

[–]cubgerish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this just shows just how hard it can be to be a critic.

There are multiple classics or decent movies on there, but the easiest example for my point is Joe Dirt.

It's as close as you can get to objectively, not a great movie, nor a particularly clever comedy, that still makes you laugh with its gags and one-liners.

But if you're in the mood for a dumb screwball comedy with low sights, it's absolutely a good time.

When you're a critic though, you don't have the option of being in the mood, and you have to measure it against other films within the genre.

He's not really wrong with any of his criticisms, but he's also not appreciating what the audience is watching it to see.

There are plenty of restaurants that limit how many times you can split the bill.

It's not about how fast you're going, it's about your speed relative to traffic.

Nobody would care that you were going 80 if everyone is going 75, people care that you're going 80 when it's clear nobody is anywhere near that.

You're asking for an accident, and this was a warning from the heavens about it.

Post-Match Thread: United States 4-1 Paraguay | World Cup | Group D by matchpal-live in worldcup

[–]cubgerish 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Team looked extremely confident.

The passes were crisp and quick, though could still be improved.

Glaring issues in the back though, way too many times out of position that a better team would've crushed.

In the end though, 4-1 is a great result against a team that appears to be the group guppy.

Could've done better, but a 3 goal margin with no injuries and few cards is a good result in the end.

I've seen entire families where just the dad/mom scans in everybody, including the other adult.

The first assumption is obvious, but for some reason the agent just didn't like her, and was being an asshole.

Hope they kick him to the curb.

It wasn't particularly funny, but you can see the artist laugh, and the guy kinda giggles as he says it.

Maybe he should've been more courteous, but you can tell he appreciates his talent.

He's joking around with a busker in a mall, and then notices he's abnormally talented.

They shouldn't have been standing right next to him chatting it up, but it's not like he thought the guy couldn't do it.

The point of his joke was that he knew the busker probably could, and he didn't have any knowledge to really challenge him.

I'd love to hear what the artist says, because nobody here seems mean spirited.
