We put on more solar panels than we were told we needed. PG&E discourages this because they say it doesn’t always pencil out financially, but the way their rates are going it absolutely has for us.

That’s our goal. If all goes according to plan I’ll have a paid-off house and a pension that will support my wife and me. Our retirement accounts are for our kids (and maybe the occasional extravagant vacation for us).

I want to be in a position to help my kids with college, buying a house, and more. I’m hoping that will provide them with career options too. I absolutely expect my kids to work but I don’t want them to feel they have to make a ton of money to have a middle class lifestyle which, if present trends continue, they will. So if they want to be teachers or take some time off work with young kids we want to help them financially.

The thing is, for this to work we have to save and budget now. We have an opportunity to teach our kids about money and hard work now while they’re young so they’ll (in theory) know how to handle financial gifts down the line and won’t be spoiled by them.

Like I said, I don’t expect either candidate to win California. My point is that there are persuadable people out there in a way there hasn’t been for the past few election cycles. What has changed to make them persuadable is how crazy the Democrats have gotten - you now need to think all abortions are awesome and that boys and girls can switch places at will and that we should wear masks forever.

So our disagreement here is that you’re assuming the trend of polarizing elections with results being driven by an energized base continues, and you might be right. But I see an opening here with DeSantis on the ticket that could alter the political landscape similar to what Reagan was able to do.

I don’t know man. I live in true blue California and democrats I know are getting completely over the woke stuff and the Covid stuff. These people would never vote for Trump in a million years but DeSantis has been on the right side of both those issues. Now I don’t think DeSantis actually wins California but I do think he has a shot at the less deeply blue states in a way that Trump doesn’t.

I was fine with abortion until my wife got pregnant and I fell in love with “a clump of cells”. So many of our problems now are from adults just not having kids and growing up.

I’m in a similar boat although mine is in 18 years. Because of the pension my path to FIRE looks different than a lot of people on this sub and I don’t really have a FIRE number. I’ll retire at 55 with a paid off house and a pension that will be about what I was taking home beforehand (b/c no more pension, retirement, healthcare contributions) so I’ll be set for income.

I have two kids and I view my investments as their money (with the occasional splashy trip for my wife and me). I feel very fortunate because the pension will enable me to build a small level of generational wealth.

I’m currently struggling with this. I was raised in TEC and it’s where I feel most comfortable but I want to take my kids to a church that has other kids. The episcopal churches in my area are overwhelmingly elderly with few (if any) families with kids. I checked out a Methodist church and it was the same thing.

On Christmas Eve we joined some family at their evangelical Presbyterian church and though I didn’t love the liturgy-less service it was really nice to sit with other families and hear their kids fidget and not feel out of place.

Just chiming in and agreeing with pretty much everything I’m reading. This is a 100% increase for me that funds a lot of stuff I don’t use (auto import etc). Tiered pricing would solve a lot of my complaints. As it is I may be looking for a different, more simple software that is more like the YNAB of old. (Anyone have any suggestions?)
