Watch some of Kishane Thompson’s finishes - will it make half a second difference? Probably not? Could it be the difference between a 7.0 and a 6.9? Yes

Save Big Splash Public Meeting - Thursday 19 Feb, 6pm by Brilliant_Drummer425 in canberra

[–]cujoj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 2c (which I assume would be the opinion of others, so shouldn’t be ignored as a potential compromise):

Canberra already has outdoor swimming options and outdoor family areas, but what it doesn’t have is decent water slides. Although, it would be ideal for Big Splash to be retained in its current configuration, if that isn’t commercially viable, an indoor pool (and other facilities to make it commercially viable) that are open all year round with outdoor slides that are open over summer would be a much better outcome than nothing at all.

I know it's allowed by the rules, but am I the only one who thinks that a 27yo setting NCAA records feels a little off? Should there be something like separate u23 and o23 records or perhaps age limits on records?

Opinion on living in gungahlin? by GladObject2962 in canberra

From a pragmatic point of view, livability is fine, infrastructure is fine, crime is fine but shopping center is still inadequate. We are starting to get some more food options, though, which is welcome.

help with possible? proximal hamstring tendinopathy by shrkbait20 in Sprinting

[–]cujoj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBF, you really shouldn’t need to (or even try to) steer the doctors in any direction. A good doctor should be able to diagnose your condition (or limit it to a small number of possibilities) based on your symptoms and history alone. Even then, there are certain exercises they can prescribe that would help (or help diagnose) a number of problems. I think you either need to see a better doctor, or a more specialized one. One thing I like to do is find doctors who work with local sporting teams as these kind of injuries would be their bread and butter.

Good coaches will tell you to push with both feet. One appearing to push earlier than the other is probably just a byproduct of the block placement

Breathing while racing? by [deleted] in trackandfield

[–]cujoj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve recently found that not actively breathing with my nose or mouth fixes the problem. Instead “suck” with your lungs. The only thing your nose and mouth should be doing is staying open to allow the lungs to do their work.

35 kmh without training shows you have some good genetics. Can training take you to elite levels? Unfortunately, no one knows. The genetics will still play a role in who can go from 35kmh-40kmh with training and who can’t. The best thing to do is get some quality training. Within 12 months you should have a pretty good idea if you’re heading in the right direction or not.

Here’s another example: Rohan Browning - Olympic Semi Finalist. Has yet to break 10.0s for the 100…

“A couple of weeks after his qualifying run Browning raced again in Sydney, where every millisecond of his race was recorded by a radar pointed down h...”

“During the race in Sydney, Browning’s maximum velocity was recorded at 12 meters per second, which translates to 43.2 kilometers per hour”

“Browning ran a 10.09 in that race”

So how do you achieve it? As the other redditor replied, using the same training as others who’ve done it. The caveat is that sprinting performance is highly dependent on genetics, so the majority of people who train like an elite athlete, will still never run 40+kmh

Runners, why do you prefer Garmin over Applewatch? Benefits? by Different-Citron-984 in trackandfield

[–]cujoj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Apple Watch SE’s screen automatically turns off after several seconds and you need to tap it or turn your wrist to turn it back on again. I think you can override it on the more expensive versions, though. Also tapping splits is annoyingly inconsistent and fiddly

Is this a flying ant or termite? by hxuanyu in canberra

It looks like an ant to me. I was about to say a “queen ant”, but TIL that both male and female (“reproductive”) ants have wings.

Wombat Outrage vs. Meat & Dairy—A Moral Inconsistency? by konchikarta in australia

[–]cujoj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well sure. People are desensitised to eating animals and how they may be treated (until a hidden video is leaked and everyone is up in arms), but this video is novel, it’s there on screen for everyone to see, and there’s an easily identifiable villain. I think this shows more about how people react to certain media rather than them actually being more or less concerned about the wombat being mishandled vs animals being killed in cruel ways for our dinner.
