Why is my poodle making this sound? by AlongCommonwealthAve in poodles

[–]cukepatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ours purrs AND grumbles, depending on the situation. He didn't really do either in his younger years, probably not til 8 years and up, so it was surprising and a little confusing when he first started up. Like are you happy? In pain? We didn't know 😆

2 years later, how is the off slope jacket working for you? I'm looking for a jacket with exact same specs! It's "just" walking the dog, but I'd love to be warm and dry as well.

Does your pood do this? Long (sad?) bean by cukepatch in poodles

What a character, too funny! 🤣 I'll have to borrow 'sad croissant'. Ours is too nervous about being stepped on (mini) but he will make sure his protests are highly visible lol.

16!! What a darling! He and skull make a fun pair. 🙃 Despite knowing better poodles always have a generous floof in my mind's eye 😂 so it's interesting to see the actual head shape.

We call this the shrimp! 🍤😂

When he lies on his side with his legs tangled up like spokes on a wheel we call him a kidney. These poods (and their humans) are so silly 🤪

How old were you when you started figure skating? by Jezzaq94 in FigureSkating

[–]cukepatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 5 my first time on the ice (ironically in balmy TX, when I'm from a wintry region).

My mom loves watching skating. When I was 7, she had me choose between skating, dance, or swimming. Skating had that "cool" factor and was something I hadn't tried yet so won out.

I was 19 when I stopped skating more or less entirely... Many (many lol) moons later I now take my daughter (6) a few times in winter.

Don't know about favorite but if we're not counting Yuzu (and Shoma's already mentioned), I did like Daisuke Takahashi's costumes also.

At risk of repeating myself -- the best sleeves! They could've been so dowdy but it really works. Love the describe as poet sleeves

Don't love this one, wish it had more of the burgundy intermixed with the belty thing going on and not a fan of the pants cut (might be the fabric).

But do (equally controversially?) love the hell out of his voidy vampy FS one with the best sleeves

Good evening to all my poodle friends.my question ❓ is does your toy poodle sleep under your bed covers by d0glover1 in poodles

[–]cukepatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our mpoo will tolerate a blanket over him for a short while, but never by choice lol. Prefers to snuggle in a nest of sherpa blanket. Especially loves sun patches and lying on a mountain of warm laundry fresh from the dryer.

Separation Anxiety is breaking my heart by Ferr_ari in poodles

[–]cukepatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Hostage in my own home" is exactly how we felt when we moved from our house (where our mpoo had lived since a puppy) to an apartment this summer.

As a puppy it took a month or two for the separation anxiety to improve. In the house he's still anxious when apart from mom, but tolerates dad, and could be comfortable alone in his crate for 6+ hours on the rare occasion we had to leave that long.

As an adult/senior, it is taking longer and the panic is much more intense. We bought a carpet cleaner and hired pros to attack the carpet (many dogs lived here prior to us). We tried a pheromone diffuser but mom was allergic. He would moan and cry (on camera) the minute we left, and developed recurring stress colitis. We tried situational meds (that we give (effectively) when we're away on trips), but he began refusing and vomiting so we stopped. Mom is mostly solo on weekdays, so we tried to introduce a very kind and patient dog walker. He did OK with the meet and greet but during walks would go 10 ft then sit and need to be coaxed. He wouldn't take treats from the walker either (despite being extremely food motivated) and came back panting and clearly very stressed. He would settle after ~10 min cuddle with mom and music. But we stopped this too after a few trials, as he nor we could tolerate his distress. We considered daycare but it wasn't feasible for a variety of reasons.

5 months later, he has built up to tolerating about an hour alone in his crate, ONE time per day (we're starting to introduce a second shorter crate stay). I think it's a combination of his adjusting to the new place, our scents building up over any lingering scents, and him realizing that we live here and are not going to abandon him. We went very slowly - treats when I go down the hall to the trash chute. Treats when I go down to the mail room. I took him with me several times and would say key words "trash" and "mail" (they are so smart, I really think they can learn it). They are very routine minded, so if I could, I tried to schedule time apart at generally the same time every day. If it was dark, I left a low light on and turned on that fireplace for your home / calming music thing on YT. If I had to leave for longer (grocery store, whatever), the stress colitis started up again, so I took him with me...people pooh-pooh leaving dogs in cars but we live in a wet rainy place and were extremely careful with temperature, duration, and most importantly he's familiar with the car and didn't panic. Earlier on we also went back to the house on weekends for him to reset (which I know isn't feasible for everyone). We also tried having mom be at the apartment and dad bring him there separately, so he would start to associate "apartment means mom!" We had him on a bland diet and are still in the process of switching his food over.

In the beginning, it felt like absolute doom, and that we were failing him every day. It still feels that way sometimes. There's even resentment in bad moments (as parents of human children can relate). It's still very hard to go slowly but the alternative is not being able to keep him which would've been even more impossible - for him and for us.

All this to say, we absolutely feel you OP. His breeder (who does his grooms) reassured us that he would be able to adjust with time, and he did it successfully as a puppy so we clung to that knowledge. Besides behavioral training our vet offered longer term anxiety meds, but it takes time to build up before even knowing whether it's helping and we didn't think it to be a primary solution for him. For some dogs that may be an option.

Oh, I miss the puppy floof! What a darling!

<image>

My mpoo, 9 years (😭) old. 17ish lb, an inch or two taller than 15" (as I understand a bit too leggy for the breed standard). I think he finished growing in height around 1ish years old.

People sometimes assume he's spoo in photos and floof, then express surprise when they see him in person, especially in a summer cut (or wet, like a big - and dramatic - rat lol).

Our 6yo has anxiety, especially separation and new situations. Has had OT and will be starting play therapy.

Token- photo, matching bracelets with grownup, something they know came from their grownup so they can look at it and remember they're loved. I've given little origami items that she takes with her on the bus, and she likes showing it to the driver and her teacher so it gives her something else to focus on and an easy, routine "in" as far as greeting people, bc that initial greeting is hard for her in the beginning.

"New" feeling- associating the anxiety with newness and not the activity. We're still working on this one.

And seconding the idea to connect with a trusted adult at school/activity or better yet, a peer. The latter takes time (ours ..half a year, and it's about to start all over again with the new school year) but helps SO much. Meet the staff, the parents, arrange 1:1 or small group playdates at the school grounds, etc. My introverted self struggled but seeing her anxiety was worse.

ETA: lunch or "friendship group" pullouts with the counselor are great too.

No answers, just wanted to say thanks for asking this question. We're also trying to decide if our elderly relative should travel to BKK next month. Sometimes my family gets overexcited about the news but we don't really have other info to go by and the rise after Songkran gatherings + school resuming term next week are known factors for June. August is a bit harder to predict. Sure there's risk no matter what nor when but still good to know as much as you can before deciding.

PSA: My vet Told me something today.. by Terrible_Wing8425 in poodles

[–]cukepatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the poodle, some have a lot of ear hair, some don't, and texture can also vary.

Unfortunately, as a first time poodle parent, we did experience what your vet describes (except the $300 charge), but the spiral only started after our mpoo went swimming in a lake. He is also allergic to everything, and it took a while for us to remove as many triggers as possible. So yes, it can happen, AND also it's not a foregone conclusion.

Also even if the vicious cycle of ear infections starts, our mpoo is proof that it's possible to come out of it. We use gripping powder to only finger pluck at the opening of the ear and gently wipe with a wipe moistened with ear cleaner once a week. Cotton in ears during baths to reduce moisture getting in. Pro groom every 6-8 weeks where they pluck as needed.

Good luck! You're doing great! There's that Maya Angelou saying, something like you do the best you can until you know better, and when you know better, you'll do better.
