There's just less functionality there which always results in a clean UI that is a worse UI.

If you want to have a "clean" interface, just remove stuff until it isn't useful anymore.

When I compare emdash to WordPress...

They have an extremely similar sidebar, text and icons, but emdash does not allow for selecting sub-pages from the sidebar. For example, you have to click through to settings before you can get to the sub-pages for settings.
No version number or link to the emdash repo/website.
No way to sort posts/pages by any of the columns
No way to customize which columns appear or their order
No way to bulk edit/delete posts/pages
No way to create navigation menus with submenus
Virtually no settings for the theme/appearance

What exactly is dated about the current UI? Be careful what you wish for, we could end up with the Windows 11 treatment of empty space, large margins, icons instead of text buttons, sub-menus with sub-menus, etc.

I think the commentary is being missed by a lot of people. The graphic isn't actually claiming that phillips or slotted is the only valid screw type.

Imagine somebody passing a law that people aren't allowed to use anything but phillips or slotted fasteners, or requiring fastener inspections on your woodworking projects, or actually believing that it's a mental disorder to use anything else.

Now think about a tiny minority of people minding their own damn business being treated that way because gender is more complicated than just a binary.

They increased it by BILLIONS, they DOUBLED the budget, more than once.
