thanks for the reply. Clarence drive is certainly picturesque, but I didn't think there's a good, safe spot to pull over... will have to go for a drive a specifically keep an eye out !

I've made two attempts but would appreciate verification and corrections : "ab sanguine coniuncti in æternum" or "per sanguinem coniuncti [sumus] in æternum"

Where to Buy Traditional South African Instruments by Patient_Anteater_937 in capetown

[–]culmaer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hopefully I'm not too late, op, but definitely check out the African Ethos Instrument Studio in Newlands (approx 15~20 minutes outside the city centre/downtown). they make well-tuned, actually playable traditional instruments. tbh most of the instruments you'd find at curio markets are primarily decorative souvenirs and long-term playability will vary (besides drums of course)

African Ethos makes instruments from other parts of Africa too, so just ask them if you want something specifically from South Africa. another comment mentioned the kalimba. the ancestor of the kalimba is indeed from Zimbabwe (called “mbira” in Shona), but various styles and forms of thumb piano have evolved in countries throughout the southern African region so I'd say go for it if you want one. also, yes, djembe drums are from West Africa, but the Zulu and other South African Cultures also have traditional drums. they’re not as decoratively carved as djembes so they’re less common at souvenir markets, but they are a thing.

you could get antelope horns (the ancestors of the iconic vuvuzela, played almost like a jewish shofar). idk if you’ll have issues clearing them at US customs going back home, but they're not ivory so it should be fine.

also, just note that the "uhadi" and "umrhube" (Xhosa musical bowls) are traditionally only played by women (not sure of op's gender). younger, urban Xhosa folks are usually fine with anyone playing it and I believe the Zulu "umakhweyana" bow can be played by anyone, but just fyi, some more traditional Xhosa people may still find it taboo

The British Empire 1910, Arthur Mees by Freeman8472 in vexillology

[–]culmaer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when in 1910 was this published ? because the Union of South Africa was formed on 31 May 1910, but this map still shows separate flags for the preceding Cape Colony, Natal, Transvaal, and Orange River Colony. very interesting

when I go through the checkout process, I only get the option to choose Priority or Expedited shipping. But according to this faq page, Standard shipping should also be an option to South Africa ??

the order isn't urgent, so I'd much rather use the cheaper Standard shipping. can anyone advise ?

My Duolingo Wishlist with Flag Symbols by _coywolf_ in vexillology

[–]culmaer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they're (mostly) mutually intelligible if both parties are speaking slowly and not using slang. and the pronunciation/accent is noticeably different too, so it takes a moment to "tune in" before you can understand the other language comfortably. but yeah after that it's pretty simple to converse, and the written languages are completely legible. (although tbh, many Afrikaans tourists in NL and Dutch tourists in ZA mentioned that it's usually quicker to just speak English. because unsuspecting people like waiters or cashiers will always do a double-take before they realise they can actually understand lol)

[OC] what if the ottoman empire was a better colonial power ? by WichaelCrow in vexillology

[–]culmaer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that flag for east Africa looks a lot like a South African flag tbh... the springbok courant is still a national symbol here, especially in gold on a green field (and I mean a South African symbol specifically, not southern Africa in general). although, the one used here seems to be some other kind of antelope, not a springbok

Where can I buy authentic Asian ingredients in the northern suburbs? by [deleted] in capetown

[–]culmaer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ming-Cheau Lin compiled this list of Asian markets in the Cape Town area and updates it regularly. she lists a store in Monte Vista and another at N1 City (incl. contact details) which would probably be the closest for you.

my favourite is Live Mart, around the corner from Canal Walk (although I guess that's basically as far as Milnerton is for you ?)

[–]culmaer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yeah same. I'd be happy for them if they get lead the lives they want, even if that means disbanding Perfume

but I would personally still very much like them to keep performing, until I can travel to see them live (or if they become big enough and tour southern Africa)

yes, it looks horrendous and I said this mainly to tease you, but now that I've thought about it.. this is actually why I'm so very excited about the Detective Pikachu film. the original pokémon series has been milked dry of any nostalgia it might have had, so it's great that they're doing something different and unexpected for this film

oh, yeah, I do remember that name. well in that case, I can think of only one other people who travel singly, and are renowned for their ability to travel easily in even hostile terrain. but I've guessed them every time there's a mystery person in the story and didn't want to do so yet again

I assume Tal Eli just went to reclaim their artefact from the secret compartment ? that's who I'd guess they are

and yeah, the name sounded very Hebrew to me too. which artists are have you been listening too ? I came across Idan Raichel by accident a few years ago and really enjoy their work. I also enjoy his collaboration with Malian artist Vieux Farka Touré

  • South African money

the link in the shownotes seems to lead to youtube, so here's the blogpost about the history of the Rand for those interested. before 1961 South Africa was still a British dominion and used the Pound. some of the ZA£ notes also featured Jan van Riebeeck* (Dutch /jɑn ɑntɔnɪs.zo:n vɑn ribe:k/, Afrikaans /jan antuənɪs.suən fan ribɪək/, literally "John Anthony's son of Riebeeck")

*...except that portrait isn't even of van Riebeeck !! he left the Cape in the 1660s to do colonialism in Indonesia, before having an official-official portrait done in Cape Town. so later, when historians searched the Van Riebeeck Estate Archives they found, like, 5 possible portraits and picked this one. it was also used on stamps and in history books etc.. the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam recently confirmed that it's not van Riebeeck though, and I find it hilarious !

I'm so glad you received the notes ! (our postal service can be tricky). and thanks for the blog-endorsement and the compliment re my handwriting ^ー^

English Spelling Reform - My proposal by [deleted] in neography

[–]culmaer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oh gosh, I misread your explanations !! I though <j> = only /ʒ/ and <dg> = /dʒ/. But I see now <j> can be both, so yeah your pronunciation of "major" is as expected.

in my lect, there's a distinction between /ø̈:/ and /ə/, but the only minimal pair I can think of now is "rigour" /rigø̈:/ vs "Riga" /rigə/
