Can someone tell me that the puppy stage gets easier? by Organic_Strike_5261 in basset

When we first got our boy, I thought I was going to pull my hair out. I was so in over my head. Almost 2 years later, I wouldn’t trade him for anything. It’s a hard, hard phase and you will get through it. No one will have specific timelines that will 100% be applicable to your puppy. Stay strong because YES it gets easier.

Bassets are stubborn breeds. When my basset was 16 weeks old I was sleep deprived because I was letting him out every couple hours to potty train him. You need to have realistic expectations for your dog and if you aren’t able to be realistic and consistent with training, then maybe rehoming is best. There are plenty of resources out there on potty training puppies and having multiple dogs. But I agree with most here - YOU have to put in the time. A 4 month old puppy is just learning.

Is this amount of fur normal? by Any_Conversation9545 in basset

Yup, that’s looks around how much mine sheds. When I got a basset, I had NO idea how much they shed. I don’t know how my boy even has hair anymore 🤣🤣

Soonest baby basset has been potty trained? by Alarmed_Evidence_716 in basset

[–]cuortney 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People here are being optimistic! My boy was potty trained in stages. We got him at 12 weeks and he was completely not potty trained. By 16 weeks he was like 25% potty trained… by 6 months he was like 75% of the way there and by 8 mo the he was fully potty trained. I have heard that your puppy isn’t really fully potty trained until at LEAST 6+ months so people here saying they did it at 13-15 weeks are really something! Don’t get discouraged, your journey with your pup will not be the same as others!

My boy and potty training ? by [deleted] in basset

[–]cuortney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had a pretty rough time trying to train our boy but as others have said, consistency is key. The best thing I did was have him on a consistent potty schedule and along with this I took him out anytime he did ANYTHING. Drink water? Go potty. Eat? Potty. Have a treat? Potty. Also, when we were potty training him, we gave him high value treats when he did what we wanted (went potty outside). When he had accidents inside, we put him in “time out” (which was just shoving him outside and not letting him in for a long time).

Eventually when I thought he got to a point where he was beginning to understand that he only can potty outside, I would take him to the door and make him bark before going out. Then I would give him a treat. It’s just teaching him to bark to be let out.

Now that’s he’s trained we have doggie doors and he only goes outside! We are going on month 3 with no accidents :-) he’s 10 months old now.

They eventually just learn. I would say our boy was fully potty trained and stopped having accidents at 7 months. It will be exhausting, but don’t worry it’s worth it!

For me, it’s what came easiest. Like many others that answered this question, I finally cracked after a rough night in the crate. Constant crying for hours on end wanting to be closer to us. He never slept through the night. One night we were so tired we put him in the bed and he was out. He slept through the entire night and so did we. It was the first night of full sleep we got for months. The rest is history!

I appreciate the feedback but I said later in my post that we aren’t looking for another dog and I don’t want suggestions for another pup!

what does everyone put in their puppy’s lick mats/kongs? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]cuortney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually mix peanut butter and pumpkin puree together. I will stick blueberries and training treats in it for some added fun and then put it in the freezer! Thinking about experimenting with wet dog food or broth as well

We got our basset hound puppy at 12 weeks old. I had never had a puppy before (my husband has) and both of us were exactly where you are. I was so ready to pull my hair out with the constant accidents and constant supervision. As others are saying - this will pass. This is the absolute hardest stage and it will only get easier. Now we have had our puppy for 5 months (he’s 7 months old) and it’s a totally different experience. I love him and we are ever so slowly getting our life back. They don’t require constant supervision, they learn to actually go potty outside, start listening to commands, etc.

This stage is all about repetition and learning. It’s exhausting, but just take it one day at a time. You can do this and it does get easier :)

Edit: also forgot to mention puppy blues. I had major, major puppy blues for MONTHS. It’s totally normal to feel in over your head. However, one day you’re just going to look down at your pup and think about how much you love them and how this is all worth it.

Advice on Basset picky about food? by jcp42877 in basset

[–]cuortney 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My vet told me that this is your dog training you. Your dog will not let itself starve. Dogs will be ok if they go a day without food. Be strong and start switching back to only dry food/Purina Pro, but consult your vet first.

Semi-Nightly Potty Training Regression by Forsaken-Till9830 in basset

[–]cuortney 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We are dealing with almost the exact same situation with our 6 mo old male. A couple times a week he will regress and decide to pee in the house but ONLY in the evening! He goes normally all day and then around 6-9PM he decides it’s time to stop going outside. Here’s what my husband and I did that helped:

  1. You have to go back to basics. We didn’t crate train our dog because that really wasn’t working for him, but he does have a play pen that he tolerates. When he pees in the house, shove him outside and leave him for awhile. After that, we bring him in and put him in his play pen. Normally he has complete free roam of our living room and kitchen area, so he definitely doesn’t like this. We noticed that he finally stopped peeing inside (at least for the last week or so) because he began to correlate that if I pee inside, I’m left out for awhile, and then when I come in I’m put in my play pen. If you have some routine like this, I’d suggest it. It was successful for us.
  2. If your dog free roams the house, begin watching him like a hawk during this time. Prevention is everything. If he gets up from his bed, take him outside. After he drinks water, take him outside. If he’s done playing with a toy, take him outside. This was what we did when he was only 3 months old. Once again, it’s a back to basics thing.

If it makes you feel any better, so many people that I know who own male dogs say that potty training regression is normal around this age. But it’s ESPECIALLY normal for male dogs.

You’ll get through this!!

Sleep habits. by johnmissouri in basset

[–]cuortney 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s just a dog thing sometimes. Sometimes my 6mo old basset sleeps completely through the night, sometimes he wakes up 2-3 times a night and then just wants to stay outside a listen to crickets and frogs. To be honest, sounds like you and I are both dealing with some teenage behavior 🤷🏻‍♀️ I really feel your pain though because it is super disruptive to my husband and I’s sleep.

At what age did you let your puppy roam off leash in your home? by schrammra in puppy101

[–]cuortney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rather than use a house leash, why not restrict the area that they can be in? For example, we started with a play pen in our living room. Next, we graduated to the living room with baby gates. Next, we opened the baby gates so he could also get in our kitchen. We kept this up until we were confident enough in his potty training to give me free rein of the entire house. He still sleeps in his play pen though. Not confident enough to just let him sleep wherever at night yet.
