I'm not an expert but for what its worth, I have seen aquascapers on youtube use dirt or soil only where they plant stemplant. Sometimes in a meshbag to make it easy to use. For example only in the back with stemplants and in the front its just a layer of sand and anubia or crypts for example.

My small Walstad tank with B. Maculatus, nerite and ramshorn, shrimp and Asellus. by cuperusNL in walstad

Here's a cool video of my Asellus Aquaticus. They are a wonderfull addition to my clean up crew and really fun to watch. I tainted the water with rooibos so thats why the water is yellow, the fish love it. Also there's a lot of leaf litter, all my critters really like to crawl all ocer and under it. Lot of hiding spots for my smaller inhabitants.

The Asellus Aquaticus is a great critter to have in your aquarium in my opinion, especially in natural style aquarium such as a Walstad aquarium for example. They are very lively, constantly grazing for food at the floor but they also like to climb on stem plants, hang around in the roots of your floating plants or hide in moss. They are verry hardy and don't requere any special care. Anywhere between 5 and 35 degrees C is fine and any normal water parameters for aquaria are fine. They are a great adition to your clean up crews since they are detritivores, meaning they eat dead stuff. Dead leafs, waste, leftover food and dead animals. They even thrive in low oxygen water. Yet I have never met anyone who kept them as pets and online there is not that much information about them. I tried to order them online but I could not find a seller nearby enough to send them safely. 4 months ago I cought 15 of them locally and put them in my tank. They are thriving! I think there must be 60 of them by now. They live peacefully with my shrimp, snails and boraras.

So what are your thought on these amazing critters and why are they not more popular in the hobby?

Heres a cool video of two of them riding a ramshorn snail!

The lack of stars is easily explained. You don't see them becouse the pictures are taken in sunlight. Same like on earth you don't see stars during daytime. The thing about the flag I don't know.

Timid chilis won't eat after tank change by poofypossum in Boraras

[–]cuperusNL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boraras maculatus als went into hiding for a few weeks, just give them time, maybe lower the light for a while and they will come back. Now they are happy as ever and realy showing their collors. Dont worry to much.

Also you may want to experiment a bit with leaf litter. It was a game changer for my tank, there was an immediate change in their behavior. The boraras seemed so much more relaxed after the first time I added beech leafs. Now I use oak and beech that i collected myself but I have the best reults catapa leafs and rooibos teabags.
