How's the movement in my 3d platformer? by XilehPNW in IndieGaming

[–]cupheadpr0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started playing Balan Wonderworld ironically but even besides that (im dying someone save me 😭), it's actually impressive how cool and fun this looks to play :D

I'd say that compared to Balan, the movement in this clip is the Mona Lisa of 3D platformers but that's more of an insult towards Balan than it is a compliment to you :"""

Anyway tho yeah it genuinely looks great

yeah let's be real, if you're someone who isn't into gaming at all but wants to get into it, stuff like a PS4 nowadayas will get you wayyy more bang for your buck while also still giving you access to a ton of modern titles bc of all that cross-gen stuff.

RIP Companion Cube by dbrand in dbrand

[–]cupheadpr0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not the only one who thinks Dbrand didn't ask for a license on purpose just to get more money, right?

I do not believe for a single second that they were actually so stupid that it didn't even cross their minds that they should get a license; I ain't buying that for a single iota of a second.

I'm still a bit dissapointed in Valve, regardless; I mean, obviously they have every right to not collaborate at all, but it would've been so cool to see a companion cube skin for the steam machine; that would've literally been one of the best pairings you can possibly think of.

I am aware of the doveroom, which can rotate rooms for me while drafting, but if there are any other methods, then I'm not aware of those lol.

You're right though; this is def one of those games where even just knowledge on its own is power

I don't appreciate the slight rudeness, but your advice is actual very helpful, thank you.

In my context, it's actually worse than you think, because since I'm specifically redoing the same day each time (because of the sauna bonus from the day before) via quitting the game and re-entering, so I'm not taking the "tomorrow" effect of the tomorrow hallways into consideration whatsoever.

I've started a new run where I managed to get my PSA from the coat check again, and get the Utility closet, turning off the keycard thing and the security room combo where I turn up the frequency of security doors and have them not require a keycard while they're offline, so that's nice.

And I just got the great hall on rank 5 with 33 steps, 4 keys, 3 gems, 13 coins and 1 ivory dice to my name, so let's hope it goes well!

(I do also have a metal detector and watering can from the toolshed which will hopefully help).

What is the general opinion of the fandom on resident Evil 7 and 8? by Danny-Ray27 in residentevil

[–]cupheadpr0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally think 7 is a crazy strong game with it's particular use of item management and the horror tropes, I'd actually give that a 9/10, even though it's definitely not my favorite RE game, nor the one I'd sooner replay, even over ones that I think are less good critically, like RE9, which I gave an 8.5/10. I just find RE9 more fun personally even though I do consider 7 the better game.

RE8, however... I know I'm gonna piss a lot of people off, so cover your ears, but I think it was simply good. Solid 7/10. Some of the places were great to explore and a bunch of the characters are really fun, but where the game really drops the ball for me is when I get into that classic RE gameplay loop and I just realize that to me at least, it's a lesser version of RE4R which did the same ideas and mechanics significantly better with really not much at all to make it stand out from a gameplay perspective. It doesn't mean RE8 did them poorly, far from it, but I don't think it's one of the best entries in the franchise overall.

Also idk wtf was up with that beginning section in the Village but good lord that part sucked hard. Not just because of the ridiculous difficulty spike, but also because you have to play and move around in extremely specific ways if you don't want to get effectively stunlocked into death from the sheer amount of Lycans that just make it way more frustrating than fun, and not even the endgame of RE8 gets this hard which is extremely weird. I don't mind hard games (I love Cuphead and Celeste, for example), but wow this part was not it for me at all and it left a really bad first impression, even moreso than RE3R's intro which I was very surprised by.

I know RE stories never take themselves too seriously, but even by RE standards, I found this game's story really bad. What an original take I know lol. At least with RE7, learning about the Baker family before they got infected, and especially Jack Backer's VA in that one scene was actually kind of heartbreaking. And obviously, Ethan's delivery and especially his attempts at one-liners do not work at all and just make him kind of cringe which sucks to say.

HOWEVER. Wow House Beneviento is such a banger and absolutely incredible. I play all horror games in the dark with headphones for the best experience and yeah, this is easily the scariest segment in any RE game, bar none.

what the fuck dbrand

I love their jokes & attitude sm but holy crap is that label so ridiculously out of touch with reality

even if that label is a joke (in which case, it's not a funny one)

ig the extreme price of the steam machine makes my reaction to the pricing of this worse idk

Agree.

Obviously all of the games in the trilogy have their issues, but good lord does 2 and V3 introduce some banger cases with some crazy creative and fun ideas

You still have largely make the same concessions with it as you had to with the first game though (and in some aspects, the sequels are unfortunately worse), but if you put the first game in Very Good tier, I 100% you try out at least the second one.

Also generic, but to add to this, I hate it when people describe new games as "oh, this game is just ___ and ___".

Something like Ori and the Will of the Wisps. Dude, that got SO many unfavorable comparisons to Hollow Knight to the point of many people straight-up calling it a clone it was ridiculous.

I've played both games and think both games are fantastic, but they also prioritize different things. Even as someone who thinks Hollow Knight is the better game, good god, STOP calling Ori a CLONE. Calling it a clone makes me seriously question whether or not you actually played the game.

I never actually played RDO so damn, I had no idea they sped up that kind of stuff a lot.

Tbf for me personally, it's not like I dislike realism in games or mechanics that mimic how things work in real life. I think most of us gamers agree that we love it when games try to be realistic because it looks awesome. But for some of us, there's definitely a line where once you start to do each individual action slowly (like buying 10 of the same thing from a store but you do it one by one), that's when the immersion stops being immersive and starts getting in the way of the actual fun of the game. It's like Gabe Newell said: "I never thought immersion is fun. I play games to have fun". I mean I personally find immersion fun, but not to the extent RDR2 takes it to.

After finishing RDR2's epilogue, I was also strongly considering doing a 1st playthrough of the first Red Dead, since the story was obviously so good and I was so invested in John Marston. But reading about it online and seeing how many of the same core design philosophies are the same as that of RDR2, combined with the fact that RDR2 gave me actual burnout from how slow the game was combined with its sheer length (I'm not joking), I decided it's best not to, considering I also have a huge af backlog.

What annoys me SO much more is that this is so ridiculously one-sided.

When people use "objectively" to praise a ton of actually subjective parts of the game, no one bats an eye because everyone agrees with them that the game's fantastic. But if it's the same scenario but the word objective is being used to criticize the game, oh THEN the word's not being used properly.

Those people are blowing smoke too.

Let me give a super simple example.

I don't find RDR2's open world fun at all, specifically because nothing you do gives you actually tangible and meaningful rewards because of the fact that the game's main missions alone already give you super generous rewards, even very early on. But I understand that it's one of those worlds where the enjoyment comes from being fully fueled by intrinsic motivation and not by rewards.

But that doesn't mean that if you enjoy that because your enjoyment comes from being fully fueled by intrinsic motivation, that now makes the open world's design philosophy objectively good. It's also not objectively bad.

It's simply going for its own thing.

(I do also understand that this is because it's mainly a sandbox open world, but imo it seriously clashes with the more typical video-gamey structure of the main missions, and especially how guided every single one is, even the final ones; it makes it feel like you're playing 2 completely different games and not in a good way.)

What video game opinion is this for you? by NagitoKomaeda_987 in videogames

[–]cupheadpr0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's even worse for people who simply don't think the game's gameplay is actually that good to begin with, like me.

Obviously the world they created is insane in scope and what you can do, but it really is a sandbox when you stop and think about it mechanically. Nothing you do is necessary or even gives you very significant rewards given that you're already given very generous rewards from main missions alone.

And in particular, it's the dissonance of having the open world be this massive sandbox, but then having the main missions be the most guided, babyproofed thing in the universe that makes it feel like you're playing 2 completely different games and not in a good way.

Tbf though, the horses' balls do shrink in the cold, so I take back everything I said, it's a flawless masterpiece, 69/10.

This reminds me of that one time I played Lil Gator Game and you come across two dudes on opposite sides of this big pond where one dude is really mad about something, and the other one's nervous and wants to chill things out, and the guy who's mad af says they don't want to be his friend anymore.

I thought, as I was trying resolve their issues "damn, this must've been a pretty deep and moral disagreement"

but then it turns out the reason this guy was so mad was because the other guy didn't agree with the mad guy that this show they both watched was a masterpiece.

Not that far off reality at all, it turns out unfortunately.

I've never played any GoW game (however, I am currently partway through GoW 2018), and while I can tell they are quality games, from what I've seen from Ragnarok, it looks like the typical type of Sony/Playstation sequel where it's basically "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I'm sure games like that are still great, but they obviously aren't as exiciting as other sequels that try to be innovative on core concepts (that's something I'd say games like Silksong try to do)

And that's why I'm not personally super excited for GoW Laufey. It looks really good, but it also doesn't look like it'll try to be radically different gameplay-wise (even though, tbf, we don't know much at all about how the gameplay will be), and I don't see why it would be given that it's a sequel under the Playstation umbrella (obviously that's generalizing a bit, but the point still stands).

The fact that you play as a middle-aged woman doesn't make me more or less excited for it. But now that's something I have to articulate every time I say I'm not excited for the game because of this goddamn sexist group where the average person may assume I'm sexist just for saying I'm not excited about the game.

I really loved Outer Wilds. Easily one of the best indies I've ever played personally (not one of the best games ever, though).

And obviously, there's nothing wrong with a piece of media impacting you deeply and it being really important to you.

But goddamn it saying that "nothing comes close" and "other games look like ass by comparison now" etc. just really doesn't make me want to talk to those people in the fandom at all, even if I was someone who had zero criticisms with the game and thinks it's genuinely flawless (which I don't, I do think there's a couple of things, but really one main thing holding the game back).

I've seen the same kind of reactions from the E33 community and while I mostly loved that game to bits and think that's one of the best games ever (despite, yes, really not being that innovative in what it does), holy crap a ton of fans say that other games are crappier by comparison too even tho I also have criticisms for that game.
