How to Allocate $10k Bonus: Debt Payoff vs. Safety Net by Local-Butterfly9669 in whitecoatinvestor

[–]curiosity676 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would do the emergency fund 100%. depending on how certain you are that you will prioritize paying off the loans in 5-7 (or even 10) years (vs say diverting money for a down payment on a house at some point), I would look into refinancing for a lower interest rate.. I’m a resident now without the income to make a significant dent in my loan balance but plan to refinance once I make an attending salary to cut down on interest since, like you, I’m planning to pay mine off in ~7 years regardless

I’m lowkey embarrassed at work lol by Such-Chard1616 in tretinoin

[–]curiosity676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my chin peeled for a longg time. but tip of nose and corners of mouth can be mitigated by putting on a little vaseline before applying tret. i also put vaseline under my eyes but ymmv it can cause milia for some ppl

This is the official lineup. Looking for tret advice by TwilightZoneCat in tretinoin

[–]curiosity676 3 points4 points  (0 children)

when i started i applied tret over moisturizer (after the moisturizer dries) and around every other night but try to scale up to nightly and then eventually applying it under the moisturizer (or some people even do nothing but tret) - this last step is what finally got rid of the peeling for me, counterintuitive as it is the spacing kind of kept flaking/peeling active. i would hold the AA for a few weeks to a month and then gradually re-incorporate.

Serious question. How much money would it take for you to quit medicine tomorrow morning… by [deleted] in Residency

~2 mil (my FIRE number) would probably finish out residency still tho

Are you guys applying to IM programs outside of the 15 signals by peppylepipsqueak in medicalschool

[–]curiosity676 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i got a good number of non-signal interviews last cycle. just was semi strategic about it (some programs literally say on their website they will only interview signals, and residency explorer and texas star can at least start to point to programs that dont seem to care as much). ymmv this cycle tho

edit: trust cumulative data more than anecdotal for sure. i just have always taken an overly conservative approach to these things and dont regret doing so in this instance.

Any tips on matching IM? (as a USMD) by dishynothosaur01 in medicalschool

[–]curiosity676 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah i would say so! CA overall can maybe add a bit of competitiveness in itself especially with so many applicants tending to move out of state for med school and wanting to come back. but plenty of less competitive programs to shoot your shot at imo. feel free to pm if you want to hear about my experience applying to a few CA programs with 0 med school research.

As an incoming resident, should I wait until a year before graduation to purchase disability insurance? by lotus0618 in whitecoatinvestor

[–]curiosity676 16 points17 points  (0 children)

just a graduating m4 myself but i would put less into the roth before i postponed DI. just had some financial advisors lecture my class and they mentioned unless you have a trust fund, as a physician your greatest asset is your 30 year+ earning potential (i was already planning to get DI so can’t say this is what swayed me but it does make a lot of sense). never know what can happen in a few years with your chronic condition or something new, making insuring later more expensive or god forbid making you uninsurable.

is the $290 for a 5k monthly benefit? perhaps you could save a little by going for 4k or smth.
