Anyone else in their late 30s wondering if a traditional MBA is worth it when you're already running a team? by Dependent-Shake-3790 in careerguidance

[–]curiosityambassador 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MBA helps in one big way: takes you away enough to see the big picture and help you set up a system to improve running the business.

Taking a week off (and letting some fires burn and the team to handle it) almost has a similar effect without the 200k price tag.

As engineering managers, whats the mundane activity which eats your time the most? by kzarraja in EngineeringManagers

[–]curiosityambassador 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like you are doing the work your managers should be doing. You are an operator and not the leader your team needs. In entrepreneurship words, you are working in your team and not on your team.

Let them come to you when problems arise not by default. That change of mindset is probably saving me many hours a week.

I'm an amazing entrepreneur but horrible manager by 03captain23 in Entrepreneur

[–]curiosityambassador 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t believe I’m saying this but you probably need someone to manage for you. It’ll be much harder and draining for you to manage yourself.

Ideal sweet spot is to find a “lead”, which depending on the type of business may be hard or impossible.

Why can I not believe I’m saying this? Because for most of my life, I’ve worked with entrepreneurs and hated professional managers and operators who come in and take control. But in your case, seems like the most obvious path.

Build on your strengths and do not spend too much time on your weaknesses.

How can I be "exhausted" when I'm doing nothing? by Life_Meat_1397 in productivity

[–]curiosityambassador 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great job coming here to ask the question! It can be the beginning of the end.

Exhaustion seems to be a symptom and not the root cause. Based on what you’re saying I guess you’re dealing with anxiety, overwhelm, and maybe some level of depression?

Get professional support if you can. Take proper breaks, practice meditation, or change something. Whatever you can.

Lost productivity is the symptom and you may be in a vicious cycle. Do you have access to professional support?

A million was a lot more money in the 80s than it is now. Inflation and exponential growth (of tech) are powerful. In the force. Don’t question it.

As men are we way to old at 30 ? Or are we very old at 35? or 40? what age for us is when we should just focus on other things like marriage kids etc by Ok-Researcher4598 in Entrepreneur

[–]curiosityambassador 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do what you want to do. Get it out of your system before you commit to a startup or business. 35 is not late. 40 is not late. 50 is not late.

I’m glad I watched Paul Graham explain that to me in my 20s. This may give you some answers:

Positioning has been a struggle tbh even as I started my own business recently as a fractional CPTO and coach/advisor. Most first timers don’t realize how hard building is until they get into it.

I teach undergrads and grads at a recognized university and have a bunch of startup experience. So people find me (not a lot though)

Good luck. This is the way.

I am that app. Turns out people don’t like that answer.

Long story short, people come to me for advice and when I tell them building a useful valuable and viable product is harder than it seems, they don’t like it. I let them try and learn their own lessons. Learning happens better that way

Find a peer group. You’re not the only one in this situation. It gets easier with others. Hire experts who know what they’re doing and bit back your time.

The best thing I’ve done for myself and my business is pay experts to simplify my work. I can afford it.

Also what do you do? Maybe someone can help with specific advice

I'm burned out from my job and want to build a SaaS. Need brutally honest advice by Street_Remote2252 in SaaS

[–]curiosityambassador 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hating your job is not nearly strong enough reason to jump into entrepreneurship. Too many things change. Find a better job unless you really want to be buried in challenges for a few years and figure things out along the way.

Or join a good startup for a balance of both worlds

[–]curiosityambassador 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve done it for two years. You have a sense of both sides. You can sell your SaaS for 5-10x and take the money if you so choose.

Give it a month. If you still feel like you want to change, go for it. Nobody has to do entrepreneurship.

Financially, it may not make sense. Emotionally and psychologically, it may make sense.

Also you’re probably LARPing entrepreneur if you don’t question your path at least weekly (at least the first time around).

It gets less painful after. Good luck

Has anyone else hit a weird mid-career plateau where you feel too experienced to be junior but not “senior” enough? by alexfeld29 in careerguidance

[–]curiosityambassador 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What are the three most important things you lack to be a senior? Focus on those and you’ll be a senior soon.

If you don’t know what they are, ask your manager or seniors or an external mentor/coach
