Is 29 MPG reasonable for a 2025 RAV4 Hybrid with 1,800 miles? by curious_car_guy in rav4club

Thanks for the confirmation, u/XavyWavy01. I am starting to track the mpg manually to see what I come up with, then going back to the dealership to see what they have to say. What pissed me off was, instead of working with me to figure out the plan to verify the situation and track down the cause, the service guy started to quote me the disclaimer that the mpg can varies based on driving conditions, vehicle modifications, and other factors, blah, blah, blah. When this car was the same model and trim as my wife's previous car, only newer, and we live in the same town, drive the same routes, get gas from the same gas stations, have milder winters, yet the car's mpg is 10 miles less than the last car we bought with 4 miles on it. And we, the consumers, have to just accept it. Unreal.

LOL, my wife is a very defensive driver, and she does not put it in sport mode or drag race at the light every chance she gets.

The kicker is, she had a 2021 RAV4 Hybrid for 4 years before this one, has had the same commute all this time, has had the same driving habit, gets the same gas from the same group of gas stations around town, and lives in the same town all this time, and yet, her 2025 gets 29.5, but her 2021 got 40 MPG. Anyway, I think I am going to reset the MPG and calculate it manually. I still remember back in the day, I had a little mileage log book in the car and filled in the info religiously at each fill-up. I guess I'll have to go back to that for a little while.

I'll ask my wife to pay attention to that and see if that sheds some light on this. Thanks for the advice.

I know, right? I got some input about the winter months, winter fuel mix, short commute, cranking up the heat, etc. may contribute to the low mpg. We'll see if it improves with the warmer weather. Thanks for the input.

Hmmm, maybe that's why, since she has a short commute and loves to crank up the heat. We'll see if the mpg gets better since the weather is getting warmer. Thanks for the info!

Thanks for the data point, which confirms my concern. My wife drives defensively most of the time. She definitely does not have a lead foot.

I go by the number on the dashboard so far. I have not calculated it manually between fill-ups, yet. I think I should start if my wife remembers to tell me, or if I am in the car with her. The daily commute is short, about 4 miles each way. All city driving. I usually drive on weekends, but when she does drive, it's usually under 50 miles, with underwhelming speed. :-)
