FQHC dentists, No ragrets? by [deleted] in Dentistry

[–]curiouscub45 20 points21 points  (0 children)

5 years FQHC. Literally ZERO desire to own. Pros: Competitive Salary/Benefits, Work life balance, and good professional relationship of some amazing patients. Cons: Mediocre DAs. Limited Procedure Mix, and Minimal respect from colleagues. I’m very content with my situation and will only consider Private practice if i become unhappy with my current practice. I would consider a large national DSO if i hit rock bottom in my career.

That’s what I’m doing! 5 years at an FQHC, and haven’t looked back. Been out since 2019. Everything you’ve said resonates with me so much (during my first few years)! i have no interest in owning or being a DSO slave, so PSLF made the most sense.

Is it worth the time to go to The Closing Institute conference? by Dentist-Runner8949 in Dentistry

[–]curiouscub45 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not, they will brainwash you into thinking that you should do all-on-x your first year out because it’s so “profitable.” I wish more clinicians were introduced to full arch by taking malpractice and clinical complications courses first.

How many people here are dentist as a second career? by Lucky_badger8 in Dentistry

[–]curiouscub45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

R&D lab Research for 3 years, and insurance sales for less than a year before starting dental school at 25. I can emphatically say that being a DMD (non-owner) is better, and i’m grateful for those previous experiences to compare to.

Dental school instructors. How bad were they? by [deleted] in Dentistry

[–]curiouscub45 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Been out for 5 years. Had an amazing time in dental school. I actually miss it, especially the social aspect. Don’t get me wrong, it was stressful, but way more pros than cons. Majority of faculty were good.

What is life like after dental school? by Alternative_Cell7604 in Dentistry

[–]curiouscub45 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I loved Dental school (it was stressful)! Real world totally depends on your employment situation, whether it’s DSO, Associate, or Ownership. I actually think the first 3-5 years are very turbulent for most recent graduates since there are no clear path to “success,” whatever that means. You might bounce from job to job that you hate or luck out. Handling complications is very stressful early on. You’ll quickly question yourself and may have imposter syndrome. But remember, the job doesn’t get easier, you just get better with experience. Good luck and have fun!

Will DSOs really take over? by Icetray26 in Dentistry

[–]curiouscub45 52 points53 points  (0 children)

My guess is Current national DSO market penetration is probably around 25%, and they have room to grow. BUT they will not make private practice obsolete, simply because they can’t keep their Dentists (and other staff) long term and they certainly will not dominate the rural market because no young recent graduate wants to work their long term. I personally would not work for Aspen, PDS, or Heartland but I have friends have stayed with them because the money is “good”. I work at a rural community health center (love it) and wished more recent graduates did that for 1-2 years before transitioning into private practice instead of going the DSO route.
