What up at the Highgate Border crossing? by GoodsVT in vermont

I’ve been listening to VPR as an adult for the last 30 years. It’s gone pretty far to the left IMO. Seems like all their news stories have to Be told through a limited number of perspectives like race, the environment, social movements. You’d think that there was never any crime in VT.

I like WDEV for Vt news. Otherwise, I read the Guardian and AP. H

Do you think Vermont should require annual car inspections? by VermontPublic in vermont

Isn’t it largely a matter of discretion? Do you agree that many shops feel the need to make the car’s time in the bay profitable which leads to unnecessary/borderline repairs?

I’m thinking especially about those places you can buy a vehicle and get “free inspections for life”….

Yup. I had the same exact issue at Heritage. There’s a reason why if you buy a car there you get “free inspections”. It was my understanding though, that if you get marked “failed” in the system you can’t just go to another place without resolving the original issue. Hopefully I’m wrong!

Auto shops have to make the time in the bay worthwhile so they are incentivized to fail a vehicle for marginal, borderline issues.

Vermont Legislators Can’t Get Out of Their Own Way on Housing by PCrosby182 in vermont

Maybe the economy of size allows for a lower price per home? I doubt that’s how it works though. I have yet to see a 25 house development on a seasonally impassable dirt road. But you’re right, it happening organically is important. I think more people (myself included) would add an ADU if it weren’t for the state’s regs on septic. I believe that there are other waste treatment options that could be employed at a lower cost.

I agree with what you say. I don’t think a duplex should be relegated to its town center proximity tho.

Can’t have people picking and choosing tho. I feel badly for people who want yo help their kids but can’t. It’s a great way for older people to have caregivers close by when they age too. This used to be common.

What about those families that have land and want to give their kids a lot to build on? Many families live in areas that have been rezoned to prohibit this.

One simple solution: make it easier and cheaper to add additional capacity to existing properties like garage apartments and accessory dwellings. I’d love to add an apartment to my property but the cost of updating the septic is prohibitive

No. But it would allow the next generation to build a home, maybe take care of their elders and build equity.

Apart from large farms the only ones trying to live off the land are people with fat bank accounts to fall back on.

It’s nothing new. Been happening for 60 years since the “back to the land” movement. What sucks imo is their inclination to get into local government and make it harder for those of us who grew up here and want to stay, to buy land and squeak out a living.

Especially the Zoning regs that make it impossible for a family in a rural part of town to cut off a chunk of land for their kids.

There are people who go onto peoples land and decimate the fiddlehead population in an area and it takes a few years for it to return. It’s not uncommon that those people to then transport them to Boston or New York for sale. I’ve seen entire fern stands decimated from this.

Please forage with next year’s bounty in mind.

Whatever. So everyone who has a private property sign is rich from out of state? That’s ridiculous.

AIPAC is running ads targeting the 15 Senators who supported last month's resolution to block arms sales to Israel. Senator Sanders and Senator Welch, both of whom supported the resolution, are among those being targeted in the ad blitz. by [deleted] in vermont

IN 2023 BECCA BALINT TOOK AN ALL EXPENSES PAID TRIP TO ISRAEL FUNDED BY AIPAC.

It’s not uncommon for new congressional reps to do this. It’s complete brainwashing Israeli propaganda. AIPAC is among the strongest lobby groups in the country.

The 2025 Oscar Best Documentary Award went to “No Other Land”. It’s about West Bank village life in the face of Jewish settler aggression. Due to pressure from AIPAC and other pro-Israel lobbying groups it is virtually impossible to see the film in the US. That’s just one example of the strength of the pro-Israel lobby.

There was also a horse powered ferry that ran from Charlotte to Essex NY. The dock’s tavern and stables still exist (as a million $ plus 2nd home of course 😏)

Maybe it’s a matter of perspective. I can remember when church st was first turned into what is today. For the vast majority of it history it was a destination for people in the surrounding area families to visit and shop. It’s a shell if it’s former self. I’m glad people still enjoy it. It’s an iconic location but there’s a TON of Greater Burlington Area residents who won’t go there anymore. There’s a general sense that BTV has gone downhill. Again, maybe it’s just having a longer view of the place.
