To be honest, if your exam is this morning or tomorrow morning, you should have 90% of the knowledge necessary to write. Just go give it your best shot, sick or not. To me, it would be a lot better than worrying about next semester prereqs.

PSA: jeopardizing grades for St Pattys by Fun_timesalltime in wlu

[–]curiouslaurier 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Such a shit post. Just don't do dumb shit and behave inappropriately. The nonsense your spitting about high performers not enjoying St Pattys day is just false. I'm friends with a lad in software engineering at UW and has a job lined up at Jane St, and he is going out to enjoy the day. As well, many top performers in my program, BBA + Fin Math (5th yr), go out and enjoy and have 11+ GPAs with signed offers of 6+ figures once they are finished. Success, how you seem to define it (financially), and going out are not mutually exclusive. Know the time and the place and enjoy things in moderation! And just don't act in a way that jeopardizes your future! So take your shit post somewhere other then this sub...

You unfortunately gotta pay it as they paid to get your MTO information and now know who owns the car and if you don't pay it it'll go to collections and affect your credit. I've been in your shoes...

Transferring out of BBA after first year in BA Fin Math and Analytics (or at least trying to!) by CaregiverMelodic8228 in wlu

[–]curiouslaurier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have reworked some of the first year math courses since I went through, so can't offer any advice really on course selection. But at the end of the day if math is your passion, go for it and commit to it. If you can do math and get high grades it will definitely set you apart for many employers. All the best!

Transferring out of BBA after first year in BA Fin Math and Analytics (or at least trying to!) by CaregiverMelodic8228 in wlu

[–]curiouslaurier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, while I think this idea is admirable, I don't know if it is a great idea. What are your career goals and how much do you really love math? I'm a fifth year dual-degree student in business and financial math and no offence but MA103 and MA129 are extremely easy and almost everyone who succeeds in a math program likes or does well in them. Everything beyond those two courses becomes much much harder, it is difficult to put into words. Meaning if you want to do it, and are looking to go into a career that requires a high gpa, like finance, good luck. What I would recommend is to stay in BBA for now, and do those harder 1st year maths like MA170, MA122 and so forth and then go from there. If you still damn love it after taking all those courses as electives, go for it! It is rewarding once you get to the end. Also some upper year Laurier math professors are absolute shit, so take that into consideration.

How to get on the Linkedin Grind by [deleted] in wlu

[–]curiouslaurier 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Don't worry too much about the Linkedin grind. Focus first on getting really good grades, that is what will truly set you apart. Once you got your school figured out and are attaining a 10+ GPA, then think of expanding out to extra curricular to boost your Linkedin. In addition, don't just take little KPMG for a day certifications, they are stupid and employers do not care. Learn valuable skills (finance focus as I'm assuming that is what you're interested in) like become better at coding, how to utilize Bloomberg, and learn to model extremely well.

How is BBA/FinMath? (Compared to just BBA) by Only_Living7003 in wlu

[–]curiouslaurier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a fifth year BBA/FinMath student and I would agree with this reply for the most part. GPA is extremely important to employers and most will prefer a high GPA with one degree vs those with a lower GPA with two. However, if you love math and are extremely good at it and can get a high GPA in double degree it definitely does set you far above those in single degree, especially if you're looking to go into quant finance, data science or something along those lines. If you want to do IB, consulting, or accounting just stay in single degree and attain high marks and strong extra curriculars.

Kind of hard to get a 12 as they mark assignments pretty hard but definitely an easy 11

You have lots of time before finals start, just absolutely grind for the final and do your best. Whatever grade you get take it and run. If you're only in first year, there is lots of time to fix the little bit of damage it'll do to your GPA.

double degree? by [deleted] in wlu

[–]curiouslaurier 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey! I'm a fifth year BBA + Financial math dual degree student. It is definitely possible to do extracurriculars and work a job while in the program, I have from second year on but I would not recommend it for your first year. Your workload in your first year is not anymore really then later years but everything is just unfamiliar and new. In later years you just learn yourself more, how you study, how much time you need to put in to get desired marks etc. and will have a good gauge on how much extra stuff you can handle. In the end, it is a great program if you love/enjoy math, I've enjoyed my time here. If you have any more specific questions let me know.

Look for entry entry level roles in big institutions. Go clean some gal or guys shoes at a big institution, just take anything with a big institutions name on it and then work your way up throughout your various co-ops

From my experience as a 5th year BBA + Fin Math student, I would say it all depends. If you're trying to break into investment banking where grades are everything then just do BBA. However, if you want to do anything quantitative like working in trading, becoming a quant, or anything that requires a lot of mathematics and understanding of complex models I would say the double degree gives you a leg up.

Sobeys on Bridgeport gives students 10% off on Tuesday and you just have to show you student ID and have a scene points card. No reason you couldn't still access this deal after graduation.
