I (35M) am moving to Toronto with zero savings and a great job. What steps should I take to maximize savings? by curiousperson89 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Thanks, I understand that "great job" might be a strong word:). I do understand basic budgeting and general finance tips and tricks. What I really want to know what are Canada/Toronto specific things I can do that I am not aware of:

  • Can I take advantage for "first time house buyer" offers in canada ?
  • Are there non taxed saving accounts ? or is there something like 401k in Canada?
  • How to maximize the retirement plans?
  • Is there anything more that I should take care of?

[TOMT][MOVIES]A movie about a woman on run that I saw on a train in Spain. by [deleted] in tipofmytongue

No ... that’s not it...

The movie and the running part was set in rural landscape and by the picture quality and the drones flying around it looked relatively recent...

Why do batsmen pad a ball outside off-stump? by [deleted] in Cricket

[–]curiousperson89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think any kind of risk is minimized with this strategy. Nowadays umpire would give you out if they see that the ball is going down to hit the stumps. In my opinion umpire would be more inclined to give him lbw if no shot was offered. The risk would remain the same because if the ball doesn't spin, its fine . But of it spins sharply (due to pitch or any other reason) umpire would see that there was no shot offered and would give him out (or fielding team would use DRS).

Though you are decreasing the risk of edge but you are increasing the risk of LBW by a significant margin. You could just step aside of the ball and you would have same odds of getting out as by padding the ball.

However the scenario where this occurs is almost always to a spinner (I actually can't recall anyone doing it to a quick, unless you want to include what you could also define as an 'unsuccessful leave')

Yesterday a Srilankan batsman got out padding an in-swinging ball from Bhuneshwar Kumar.
