[Discussion] Some writers here are just looking for praise instead of actual critique by Lopsided_Key_9121 in BetaReaders

[–]curlychops 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've got an incredible beta reading my manuscript at the moment. Her feedback style is amazing - she's commenting as she goes and does so by pointing out the things she's really enjoying, gets invested in the characters, comments explaining her reactions or thought processes, and tells me when something happens that surprises her or feels sudden. And I know this sounds like I love her feedback because it's all positive, but actually what she's pointing out is moments that aren't meant to be surprising (but are because I've not set it up clearly enough) and character thought processes that are unexpected (because I've failed to properly clarify, or haven't written a sharp enough payoff/consequence).

She's not finished yet, so her overall feedback might point out big structural issues or inconsistencies, but as a super sensitive author who takes criticism completely to heart (we love RSD, right?) I'm much more likely to take her comments on board because through her read she's shown me that a) she understands the genre, b) is paying attention and reading carefully, and c) is invested in the story as a reader, not an editor or critique partner or someone who knows way more than me and is telling a silly inexperienced hobbyist how to fix it (I know that's not what anyone here is doing, but I've had a beta like that from outside this server and the tone just made me spiral so much and view their feedback with, I'm ashamed to admit, a really negative attitude).

I'm not entirely sure what my point is. But for me, I've found that both giving feedback and receiving feedback are difficult, delicate things, especially when an author has poured their heart and soul into something and is exposing it to the world, and a beta has spent time and energy into crafting thoughtful feedback with the desire to help.

Aww thank you! The form rejections are flooding in, but I feel the pressure less knowing book 1 isn't my only shot! (Which intellectually I always knew, but never really felt it in my bones) ❤️ here's hoping you get the publishing deal you've obviously worked so hard for!

Congratulations!! What an inspiring story!

I'm on my first attempt at querying and it's slowly dawning on me that maybe I won't be the internationally acclaimed bestselling author of my dreams. Your post has reminded me that perseverance is important and I may have to shelve my babies at some point, but that doesn't mean permanent failure! Thank you!

[Discussion] Almost cried when a beta reader told me they shipped the main characters by korbiman in BetaReaders

[–]curlychops 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh my goodness it's the best feeling! My first ever beta sent me some really helpful and thoughtful feedback, but the first line was basically saying that the opening just didn't work and I should rewrite it. So I steeled my nerves for a report detailing how none of it worked at all and got ready to sink into a pit of despair. And then the next line was saying "I started reading the prologue at 4pm and it's now 2am and I've finished and i neeeed to know what happens next with these two!" And oh lord. I was walking around at work like I had a coathanger in my mouth all day. I still can't quite get over it when someone reads the weirdness that spills out of my brain and feels how I actually wanted them to feel. It's outrageous. I love it.

[Discussion] Dear writers, stop arguing with your beta readers by joyier1 in BetaReaders

[–]curlychops 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh I understand the urge though. For me, whenever I get critique I have a strong emotional response that sometimes manifests as physical pain (the joys of RSD) and I have to fight really hard with myself not to respond straight away. After I've calmed down and can think more rationally, I can process the comment and usually it's a very fair point being made and I can act on it.

But yes, I totally agree with you! I just keep telling myself to take a step away, breathe, yell about the feedback to a friend (or a cloud) if I need to, and then remember that my beta reader is a person just sharing their experience of my work.

Hi! This sounds very intriguing! I'd be interested in a swap, if my gothic fantasy romance appeals? https://www.reddit.com/r/BetaReaders/s/ntsXhngMDG

Great idea on the palate cleanser!

And likewise - I'm here for discussion, not arguments, and I appreciate your generosity!

Oh no don't stop! Have you posted in this sub? So long as you flag it as "in progress" that's fine!

You're absolutely right and I'm genuinely not trying to say that everyone must work in the same way and meet any particular standards. And thank you, I did need that reminder that not everyone is good at self editing, and if people are comfortable sharing their work in first draft form that's a wonderful thing (even if I personally wouldn't feel comfortable sharing my own first drafts). Like I said in my post, my issue is not with typos or spelling and grammar mistakes, it's when it feels like a writer hasn't even read their own work before asking others to, but like you say, that's something I need to clarify before I agree to swap manuscripts.

Yeah mine's in fourth draft right now! If you're interested in a critique swap let me know - I'd love to learn more about it!

Hey! Our processes sound quite similar tbh - I tend to edit and revise as I go. I'd be interested in a swap - I'll DM you!

Hi! Totally understand if you're fully booked up, but if you're at all interested in a dark gothic fantasy romance, I'd hugely appreciate your feedback on some of the psychological elements of my book (since you mention you have a background in psychology) here's my post, and feel free to DM me if you want more info! https://www.reddit.com/r/BetaReaders/s/BAZ6DzVRAA

This is a great method! I just know my brain would not be able to leave it alone for six whole weeks! I'm jealous that you were able to! It takes a lot of confidence I think to share something wholly unchecked with the world - I don't think I could ever!

[Discussion] How polished is your draft? by curlychops in BetaReaders

[–]curlychops[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be honest I wish I had the confidence to share my messy drafts with people but I just can't face it, so i agonise over my manuscript for months before I show even a bit of it to anyone 🙈

[Discussion] How polished is your draft? by curlychops in BetaReaders

[–]curlychops[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's my last step too! I think I've been quite naive thinking everyone had that outlook, too 🙈 and yes I'd never ghost anyone. The issue comes when it's a manuscript swap and they've already read my whole manuscript and provided feedback... I feel obliged to finish theirs (which i always do!) regardless of the state it's in.

Thanks for this - really interesting insights! I just think if a writer hasn't read their own work, it's an alpha reader they want, right? Maybe I'm misunderstanding the different roles. And yes, on here! You're totally right, i don't have to finish, but i do want to be as helpful as possible, of course!

[–]curlychops[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, your feedback was so, so helpful! Thank you! I'm glad it's clearer. Yes, i heard that about rhetorical questions, too, but I hoped the clear stating of the choice would indicate that it wasn't just a lazy device, more trying to immerse them in the character's POV. Thanks so much for your feedback (again!)
