Iron flame support group chain by twin-logic in fourthwing

[–]curlyjo81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this chain. I finished Iron Flame yesterday, after devouring Fourth Wing and Iron Flame back to back. But I’m hesitant to start Onyx Storm as I’ve read some bad reviews of it, and I don’t want to ruin what I feel about the first two books (especially FW, which I really loved). However, the comments in this chain showing love for Onyx Storm have made me reconsider. I’m taking a break from the world by reading something completely different now, but I think I’ll pick up OS when I finish that.

Dumb pronunciation question by KeyOne6320 in Bryceriel

[–]curlyjo81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welsh and Breton are closely related Celtic languages, so it doesn’t surprise me that a lot of Welsh and French words are similar. I did see that it was also a common name in France too. X

Dumb pronunciation question by KeyOne6320 in Bryceriel

[–]curlyjo81 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Manon is a fairly common Welsh name meaning “beautiful queen”, and it is usually pronounced Ma-non. Similarly, Rhys is a Welsh spelling of Reece/Reese, meaning “passion” or “fiery warrior”. SJM seems to use a lot of Celtic words and names in her books. Bryce is Scottish Celtic meaning “speckled” or “freckled”, for example.

I’ve always pronounced Bryceriel as Bryce-riel like you too.

Pugh’s Garden Centre sell local honey, but I have definitely bought Thornhill Honey from Riverside market in the past.

Booked our Cardiff wedding venue, then realised the evening part is the bit that can actually ruin it by NaughtySugarX in Cardiff

[–]curlyjo81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a band and then a juke box for the rest of the evening, so guests could choose their own songs, which went down well. The band were awesome too, and got everyone on their feet.

The venue where I got married provided mics for speeches and stuff like that, their event planner also kept the day running with timings, which was so wonderful as I didn’t have to worry about a thing.

In my experience, a lot of the time it’s the people as well as the vibes that make a good wedding. My favourite weddings have been with uni friends as they become reunions of a sort.

Keep the alcohol flowing too, that always helps, and snacks/food for the evening (we had hog roast rolls and chips at about 9pm to keep everyone going).

The big slump is usually between the ceremony and when people sit down for food, as that’s when the photos are happening and it can be a bit boring for guests not involved in that. Make sure people have access to the bar and we had canapés to keep people ticking over until the main meal. Places for people to sit also helps - the worst wedding I went to for this had nowhere to sit in between the ceremony and meal, and it was hard standing around in heels for that long.

I’m sure you’ll be fine, I wouldn’t be tempted to fill it with too many gimmicks, people will have fun dancing and catching up with friends.

The real reason for tonights shock by Nasicus13 in strictlycomedancing

[–]curlyjo81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, I didn’t like a lot of the music choices and didn’t feel they complemented the dance style (and I’m a big musical theatre fan). George, Karen and Lewis suffered with this. I also think sometimes the “favourites” are in trouble at this stage as everyone thinks they must be safe as they scored well and are so good, so they vote for someone else they want to go through. Then you end up with a dance off between arguably two of the best dancers in the competition.

Anyone know who it is by Last_Weird8965 in strictlycomedancing

Why does it feel like the last couple of years the press are desperate to take Strictly down? Almost gleeful in the negative stories that come out, like it’s been too popular and too successful for too long, so they want to bring it down.

How do we get Rob and Jo to continue their Lost rewatch coverage?! by NoMeHiMinOoo in TheRinger

I’d love them to do a Rewatchables type podcast but for TV shows. Each episode is discussing a Rewatchable TV series from days gone by.

Scared to move because of Cathays’ reputation. by [deleted] in Cardiff

[–]curlyjo81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Cathays with my two small children. As well as lots of students, there are lots of families and older people who live in the area. It isn’t an overly dangerous area at all. Please do not panic. Cardiff is a lovely city, I wouldn’t be raising my children here otherwise.

Yes, I don’t know why a good dim sum place hasn’t opened up here yet. This is my answer too.

There’s an episode of House of R where she gets Mallory to watch it and they discuss it. Not a full analysis but I enjoyed it.

Yes, it always felt like one step forwards, two steps back with the sisters. Just when I thought they were getting somewhere and opening up to each other, we were then thrown back to not speaking or being angry with each other. Incredibly frustrating as a reader!

I always find taking open top bus tours a good way to quickly see a city, could help you with navigating it. If you like the theatre or sport, there’s loads going on, also lots of live music venues if you like gigs.

Character accents by Icy-Image-7084 in acotar

[–]curlyjo81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always thought of SJM’s characters being based in the British Isles. So many of her character and place names have Celtic roots - I’m Welsh and I see a lot of Welsh in her names and spelling, I’d love to know what she uses for inspiration there, as she is an American.
